Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Do you think any of these examples are cheating?

1. Two players are close to the boundary line with the ball on the ground. One deliberately flicks the ball on to the other player's boot with the intent that the ball go out of bounds on the full, thereby gaining a free kick.

2. A player with the ball is being chased down from behind. Just before he is tackled he hand-passes the ball in front of him to no-one, thereby earning a free kick.

3. When a ball is about to be bounced in the centre of the ground, one wingman pushes the other wingman into the centre square. The umpires don't see the push but see the fifth player in the square and pays a free kick to the pusher's team.

1. Gamesmanship - but certainly NOT the intention of the OOB on the full rule.  Not sure how it can be changed, unless (radical change) the guy who flicks it onto the other's boot gets a deliberate paid against.  Very hard to adjudicate.  IMO those should be regarded as "incidental" and the ball thrown back in.

2.  Surely this is an extension of the Kevin Bartlett rule and he should be regarded as still in possession?

3. Cheating - heavy fines in retrospect should be paid, and if any of the multitude of maggots (2 goal, 4 boundary, 3+emergency field) see it they should call it out immediately.  It would stop very quickly.

Its more than having to pretend. Under a legislative scheme in Victoria, the AFL has to satisfy the gambling regulator that it has integrity measures in place and that they are properly enforced. Once the regulator is satisfied, all betting companies trading in Victoria have to come to an agreement with the AFL before they can take bets on any AFL activity. Of course, the AFL charges those betting companies for such agreements. I assume, as a minimum, the money the AFL gets from the betting companies covers the costs of the AFL managing its integrity processes.

Wink, wink; nod, nod.

Both are above the shoulders and I see no ducks so both are frees.

kevin bartlett rule was different

he didn't handball away

he threw the ball forward as in a bounce just as he was about to be tackled. it was an effective way to dodge around a player and play on, or to draw a free kick. bartlett actually most times did bounce it properly whereby he could receive it. As other players copied this unfortunately they just threw the ball forward and propped, and it be came a mockery and a farce.

this was an interpretation change issued by the afl (vfl then) wherby you were not deemed in possession during the bounce, to reduce scimmages and get more ball flow (esp for the more skilled players) same as for the flick pass. Both interpretation changes had short lives......though some might argue the flickpass has virtually returned.

As I've made clear above, I don't think playing for frees is cheating. On the other hand, subbing players out of the game because of injury and then having that player available to play the following week surely and sorely tests the sub rule. I see Adam Treloar was subbed out last week and is apparently going to play this week. That's an abuse of the rule as it gave the Bulldogs fresh legs in Q4. The AFL should either get rid of the sub altogether or make it a hard and fast rule that a player subbed out must not play again for the next 12 days.

What do you reckon @layzie

Are the umpires cheating? If not, can you do us all a favour and go on to the game day thread (as you've done here) and point out that the umpires do not cheat

You and @La Dee-vina Comedia

I look forward to seeing your comments and thanks in advance!! haha

So the players aren't cheating but the umpires are?  Is that right?

It's definitely a gripe I have with the game day thread. That's for sure.

Without people like you there I wouldn't bother with it (game day thread)

Keep up the good info as I can often only listen in to our games (replay watching later)

But even I'm not game enough to take on the umpire lambasters on the game day thread ... I just scroll past or put them on ignore

And they never make any comments about the actual game.  Which is quite odd

I've always said and still firmly believe that the umpires do not cheat. I also believe it's time the AFL did a wholesale review of the complete set of rules to rewrite them to remove as much ambiguity as possible. It is fundamentally a game that has become too hard to umpire. In my view, the rewrite is a 5 year job, not a tinkering between seasons.

I avoid the gameday thread for two reasons. Firstly, I'm too busy watching the game and don't need the distraction. And, secondly, it's the gameday thread! It's too emotional and a dangerous place. It's like QAnon meets the collected works of Mark Robinson.

You are right and I agree with what you've said there

Anyway, it's going to be very interesting to see how they go about policing the new high tackle rule

In my view they (the umps) are going to make some errors (forced mistakes) but we need to look at the overall ... i.e. take the good with the sometimes bad

Good reply LaDee

Are you sure about that Macca? Some of the stuff I spout in that thread is as if it's from some tortured eccentric artist. 😛

But it is tiring, the first comment about the umpires usually comes 4 mins into a game.

Yeah nailed it La Dee-vina. The band aids and sticky tape solutions have done their dash.

Your good self, Andy, P-man, chook and a few others keep us well informed, layz

Need more footy actual input though ... lots more!  Scores would be handy sometimes

    GAMEDAY: Rd 09 vs Carlton

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again headlining another blockbuster at the MCG to kick off the round of footy. The Dees take on the Blues and have the opportunity to win their third game on the trot to solidify a spot in the Top 4 in addition to handing the Blues their third consecutive defeat to bundle them out of the Top 8.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
