Farewell Brodie Grundy

I'd happily trade him to Geelong in return for Max Holmes (faint whispers he might be on the move).

Yep, gimme gimme

Grundy and a third rounder for Georgiades? I know we were keen in his draft year, he's got no contract, and he's not yet 22. Coming off a reco and not in their senior side at the time.

Fritsch, JVR, Kozzie, Watson, Chandler and Georgiades forward for the next 7 years? Yes please.

It's beginning to feel like returning something you bought online because when it arrives it's not quite what you expected.

I'd go even further, it's like marrying the stripper and then being disappointed when they won't be a yoga pants wearing mum.

This is definitely being considered.

This or a similar deal with the Swans for McLean would be best case scenario I reckon

Despite the partnership with Gawn not working as intended this year, we could still come out winners in the Grundy trade if we land a promising young player out of it

As much as I feel for Grundy on a human level, he’s a great asset for us to have either as a second ruck or as a trade piece

It Mitch Georgiades really that good?  I thought he was struggling to get a game last year and that was pre-knee.  I know key forward take time but he's on the shorter side the way the games going (1.92) - when we already have Fritsch, Smith and Melksham.

I would have thought someone with some size that is a threat for the dump kick / can pinch hit in the ruck would be a better fit

(but I know we were keen on Mitch in his draft year and there's always whispers about him each year).

I saw an article about Fullarton from Bris.  Basketball background - Cat B, 24 yo, 200cm, athletic ruckman / forward.

Limited opportunities to break into the senior side due to Big O, Danither, Hipwood etc

Apparently a good chance to leave at the end of the year.

Haven't seen enough of him but seems to have all the tools required?

Yes. He is. He consistently takes 4 to 5 marks per game, the absolute benchmark that separates good key forwards from ones that don't make it. A nice mix on contested and uncontested. Kicks straight and critically, he makes a couple of tackles a game.

The way we structure our forward line, I'd argue we don't want the 200cm. I can read the rants now about forward pressure neglect if we had King etc.  (Both average less than a tackle a game).

Statistically, until now he has produced a very similar output to Oscar Allen. Would you take Oscar Allen for a third rounder?

Caveat of course post ACL recovery.

Loved the Grundy experiment but losing a 28yr old ruck for a 22yr key forward would balance our list nicely.

Or Liam Reidy at Freo

He isn’t a basketball player who might play football.
He is a footballer who plays basketball as well.
He played with my son at East Brighton so I’ve seen him play and he is a forward first who rucks

natural footballer not a project athlete

quality left foot kick.

I've seen enough of him to know that with 2 years of consistent training and matches he'd be a 40-50 a year goal kicker. That's all we need.

Honestly, can’t see Port wanting to part ways with him. Dixon on one leg will likely retire, Finlayson and  Marshall is not the best forward line. Maybe Lord gives them an edge but he is no Georgiadies.

If we are chasing this they’ll likely want additional picks and part of Grundys contract paid.

Good thing is we have Sydney as a suitor so will like get a reasonable  deal.

Well...isnt this a bizarre situation.

To those that suggested Brodie would be elsewhere...well ...kudos..  I certainly didn't think this would transpire ( should it ) as i thought it was being  looked at ,more holistically,  over a longer period.

It is for mine somewhat ironic in so much as I'm sure Max wouldn't be in his current shape/form  , nor the club sitting 4th if not for Brodie.....and yet...

There was undoubted reason for bringing him onboard....and there might be similar for allowing him his journey.

Footy is weird sometimes.

I still have a nagging suspicion there's a little more to play out.

You forgot Jefferson and Petty

Depends on where we sit with Georgiadies want him or not?

We have JVR for very good competitive ruck relief

Perfect fit if Grundy goes - a bargain.  Saw him kick 7 at the Gabba in his first season and he hasnt been able to break into the Big O/Fort/Daniher combination

If this stuff about shopping BG around is legitimate it still makes me feel a little uncomfortable with it as it's pretty much what Collingwood ended up doing to the bloke. Less so if it's being driven by him though.

I hope Brodie goes as its hard seeing such a good ruck and nice guy play in the 2s. especially with all the media scrutiny

Clearly being pushed by him.

On the plus side, it frees up some cap space to go after someone like Naughton who we were allegedly after last year. We'll have the picks to satisfy as well...

Unfortunately Grundy has done NO wrong, it's Max not being able to let go of that number one ruck spot. The intention was Max would spend time predominately forward and Grundy to ruck. So Max and the club have got Max's ambitions and capabilities all wrong. Blind Freddy could see it wasn't going to work.

I’m sorry but Max Gawn is the best ruckman in the game. Has been for about 6 years now. Why should he give up the number one ruck spot?
Grundy hasn’t adapted to playing beyond the ruck. He’s a very poor mark for his height and his impact at ground level has been just ok.
I have nothing against this trade or what the club was trying to do, but Gawn being Gawn is not the problem here. He is an elite footballer and we are lucky to have him!

You’d want a lot more than that for Grundy.
Georgiadis has shown very little in his career and is 6 months into a knee reco.
Grundy is a proven ready to go A grade ruckman.

That makes me feel a bit better about it all but it's still not a nice situation for him. He thought he was going to a club that genuinely wanted him, unlike his former employer.

I agree with you don't worry, however all of this was Max's idea from the start don't forget.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
