The contracted player has also been responsive with quiet discussions since July. I have no idea of the chance of success. If I say who it is this has the real chance of wrecking the good work our recruiters are doing and would undermine the chances of success.

You cant say it, so i will. It's Harry McKay 😁

Either of the King brothers, Harry or Naughton would be nice!

Anyone who can remotely be considered a key forward would be nice.

Doesn't mean we're not chasing his signature though. Wouldn't be a bad option for our forward line for a year or two, would be a strong option who demands a decent defender for a bit before the likes of JVR and others take on more responsibility.

Absolutely, I've been mentioning him as an option here for a while now.

My apology got the uncontracted and contracted the wrong way around.  I have since fixed via edit. Gunston "uncontracted", the other key forward is contracted.

Makes sense that the contracted one would be more hush hush then.

Cheers.

Happy about chasing Gunston, but I believe he's an uncontracted free agent mate.

We need a power forward! Gunstan is a second or third forward

Pass

Agreed but would replace Mitch Brown on the list.  This would be a significant improve.  Gunston is a superb kick, has fantastic forward craft and is a difficult match up.  If Fritch and he could get their forward craft working together it would create headaches for the opposition and less scrutiny on BBB.

We’d be crazy not to be asking the question to Gunston. We were interested in him 12 months ago but baulked at Hawthorn’s asking price of a first rounder (fair enough too). Now he’s a free agent but still playing good footy, I don’t see why we wouldn’t be all over him. Fritsch and Gunston would combine for 5 goals a week quite easily when fit. They both kick lots of goals even when they’re not playing particularly well (if that makes sense). Yes to Gunston.

I reckon it is

There’s enough media chatter to suggest something is up with him. Barrett potted him this morning in his Sliding Doors piece

Are we saying that if Gunston come to Melb is he the alternative for another key forward? If not, how does he fit into our forward line? Does he take the place of Spargo? If so what are his defensive skills and gut running like these days? Not sure.

Gunston can play the Tmac role too.
Would cost little. I’m all for it.
We are in a wide open window. Experience and proven performances mean a lot.

The assumption is that the game plan will remain ‘lock it forward and kick to the pockets’.  If we had better f50 presence, it might be that ‘go down the guts and score’ becomes the better percentage play.  Defensive forwards are perhaps not as valuable as offensive ones…..

Not sure Goody would agree with this.

Hi All,

We are currently courting a contracted and uncontracted player both "A Grade" Key Forwards.

The uncontracted player is Jack Gunston. We are well and truly in the race despite some contrary media reports suggesting a move to Brisbane or retained by Hawthorn. I have been told we are odds on!  (that's better than 50% chance snowflakes not a certainty).

The contracted player has also been responsive with quiet discussions since July. I have no idea of the chance of success. If I say who it is this has the real chance of wrecking the good work our recruiters are doing and would undermine the chances of success.

Snowflakes, please refrain from abusing me...........I quite enjoy your D-Grade dibble, it's just super boring reading for the rest of DL.  If you don't want to hear what I have to say BLOCK ME.

Love the info GNF. no certainties of course but good to know we’re at least knocking in some doors.

100%.

If we bring Gunston in at the expense of Ben Brown, for instance, we could run with 3 of T-Mac, Gunston, JVR & Fritta at any one time, maybe even all four. That takes a lot of defending. Using our own defense as an example, that setup would certainly keep Petty, May & Lever honest and we are the only team that has 3 defenders of that quality.

Certainly a lot more mobility/flexibility in that lot versus our current Brown/Gawn/Jackson rotation.

It has to be posturing.

Lobb has already bought a property in VIC and is moving interstate with his partner. He has requested a trade in consecutive years. He will move whether Freo like it or not, so it's up to Freo whether they'd like to get anything back for him in a trade. If Freo don't honour his request, he will simply claim mental health issues and walk. The mental health card, legitimate or not, can and will continue to be used by players to get out of poor situations.

The players have too much power these days.

Only if he wants to walk away from 700k he is owned for next year with no guarantee he would get a good deal following a year out. Might have to sell that nice house if he follows that path

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
