Trade and Free Agency rumours

Geez, tough offseason for Norf...

North should rightfully demand the number one pick for him. Anything less is a lose for them. The AFL need to do something here. First Jackson, now JHF. Murmurs about Pickett. The draft was meant to be a means to even the competition, not a nursery ground for homesick boys. North have every right to be pee’d off about this, the same with us and LJ.

Gotta change the contracts for first rounder draftees. The top kids get drafted to the struggling clubs and want to leave straight away. A number one pick leaving after one season is not good for the game.

not much that can do unfortunately, he is still contracted

I agree!

can’t see them letting him go

He's a gun for sure but his attitude needs to improve. It doesn't look like he has good people advising him

judging from how unhappy jhf seems at north, i wonder if this could be the first time we simply see a player refuse to play for a year

Cam McCarthy sat out a year before moving from GWS to Freo

What a pea-heart this bloke is.

Things not looking rosey so he wants to bail. Hasn’t even been there 12 months.

It’s already happened a few years back. Can McCarthy at GWS requested a trade to Freo in his home state of WA. It was rejected. He then returned to WA and sat out for a year. The next year he requested trade again and GWS traded him to Freo for stuff all.

Players hold too much power and it’s ruining the game.

I reckon the Cam McCarthy trade is a cautionary tale for anyone thinking of going down that road. Looked a decent player early in his career but didn;t look the same at Freo. Sitting out the year was a bad idea i reckon

these 1-3 year players tho...demanding trades after they've played less than 50 games! pfft...try less than 20!!

Ssh, we may be interested in Finn Callahan, who we looked at in his draft year, but he went far too early for us and he was a Dees supporter.

Whether there's any truth to the rumours or not, I can't see Port prying Pickett (say that three times fast) away from us if they plan to land both JHF and Rioli this off season.

Is he a dees supporter? Interesting

I know they said he's best buds with Howes tho

Oooo, interesting, id like that move. but can't see how we get it done

Probably no chance this year, unless we could add a player to Bedford and a good pick. Even that probably won’t get them interested, unless he could convince them he will leave next year.

What a prima donna. Worse than Scully IMO. At least Scully was a professional and saw out his contract.

If we're not we should be.  I know from a GWS point of view he was offered an extension beyond the standard 2 years he signed as a first round pick.  He hasn't signed that extension...

I wonder what it would take to get them interested, if we could get him interested. Bedford is a small entree, before the main meal.

Bad for us if Freo were wanting to swap for Ports pick 8 with their pick 13 and acquired 20 pick for Logue

Maybe we should help Port out and give them one of the first round draft picks we get for Jacko so they can package that up with their existing 1st pick to get JHF.    All we'd be looking for in return is Georgiades.

We'll have more leverage next year when he's OOC.  I doubt he does a JHF and asks to be traded in-contract.

I'm drooling at the thought of this. Was very impressive in his first game against us. Showed incredible poise and footy smarts way beyond his years. Can't see any chance this year with GWS likely losing Bruhn and Taranto but I hope we stick with it for '24. Would fit in perfectly on the wing.

Probably correct.

Maybe GWS are offering Finn as a salary dump for pick 5….. I hear his base wage is backend and they are up to their ears in salary cap issues re signing Hogan.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

The Dees ran another clinic for the second week in a row as they easily accounted for the Tigers in the lightning interrupted shortened match at Mars Stadium in Ballarat.
