Free kick was soft, the seconds tick down, the noise so loud, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the Swans player didn't hear it before kicking into the stands.

Technically a 50 but perhaps par for the course.

I don't see how it could be a 50 if he kicked it over after the siren....

Totally different...ours occurred during the game, not after the bell.

Yes. Is that the difference?

BT has completely lost the plot. Free kick was soft anyway, 50 would have been controversial after the siren went but it probably should have been paid. Correct call I though though.

Technically the ump should have reversed the free for dissent 😅

Maybe he didn't notice the dissent 😎

What a bizarre explanation by the umpire - "not unreasonable that he didn't hear the whistle"- doesn't usually matter as far as I have noticed.

And the Stand rule relies completely on hearing the umpire

was a 50 every day of the week

hilarious!

I get the common sense thing because the swans player probably wouldn't have known it was a free, but it should have been a 50. Would have been paid at any other time. I mean you just have to be aware of what is happening. On another note someones just scored a free footy in the crowd.

The swans did do some stupid thigs tonight being a bit undisciplined.

Interesting to hear dimma in the presser.

Yes because once the siren goes the ball/time clock is dead.  Kicking the ball away is considered a free for time wasting.  Kicking the ball away after the siren?  Not time wasting .... no free kick (or in this case a 50).

I'm pretty sure that the ump was checking online for the time line...

The Tiges cost themselves the game anyway, should have put it away.

On the other hand Richmond fans are seething right now and that makes me laugh.

That’s not the point. Viney was suspended because of the action and how it looked. The AFL want to protect the integrity of the game. Franklin threw a punch. If they are consistent, he gets a week at least

Footy has to the most weirdly officiated game in the world

the umpires factor in what players may or may not hear to their decisions. Madness

It should have been a fifty but it probably makes up for all the stupid umpiring decisions the tigers got through the night, I did not see anything from those 2 sides that would worry me.

The clock stops when the ball goes out of bounce, and a 50 can be paid. The siren sounding is irrelevant.

Yes they might have confused those in yellow and black as an umpire committing the dissent!

So if a Sydney player had entered the protected area when that final kick was being taken, no 50?  Misread that.  Disagree though

No sarcasm emoji bobby!

Dissent only exists when a free is paid against you in the AFLs eyes

Brad Scott should be worried about his mid season performance review 😂

Buddy Brutal!

I tell you who’s about to get robbed after that. Me and everyone else that needs Prestia for 25+ possessions in a multi, they still haven’t added his kick after the siren onto his stats.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
