On this day in 1958, this was how the Melbourne Football Club used to recruit players - a letter, a meeting and a movie and training started in March.

Wow, great formatting pre word processor!! Also love the line "strongly recommended you attend"!

Is that Ronald or Donald Matthews?  In any case, he never went on to play for Melbourne seniors.

There was a Don Matthews who played 30 games for South Melbourne in 1956 - 58 but it couldn't be the same bloke as the letter was an invitation for kids to try out.  Nobody called Ron Matthews ever played VFL.

I wonder whatever became of the addressee in the letter.  Where was it sourced, @Whispering_Jack?

Hunt pretty big there.

Melksham's 'airy' handball.

The look on Oliver's face: reminiscent of his 'chat' with Dangerfield as Gawn lined up for his after-the-siren heroics.

Good times.

Good times.a great last 10 minutes and yes Hunt had a big hand in the win, Milkshake and Kozzie were on 🔥

How on earth did Melksham mark that ball on 3 Blues defenders!? Pittonette trying to milk a free but Melk with the smarts got a 50 instead 🤣😂

Kozzy with Hunt's headband on with Hunt's kick inside 50 with goal over the shoulder in the dying seconds was folklore stuff!

Best part was able to read that girl Blues fan's lips... "Get f****d!" 🙃😁

Thanks, bd.

I miss by a tad or two.

But, simple times, weren't they. Full of jolly good fellows and sports.

And what the horizon then held for the MFC!

I'm sure that @old dee remembers it fondly.

After all, it was the year that he finally retired from the work force and was able to collect the Aged Pension.

So @old dee was born the same day as Keith Richards during the eruption of Krakatoa.

Thanks so much for posting bushy.

I’m more than happy to admit that I was a youngster in ‘48, and that Flag is probably the main reason I’m still a proud Dee to this day!

ps.  I was always a bit of a rebel back then, and my folks were ‘one-eyed’ Bombers.  It was a perfect opportunity for a bit of one-upmanship.

Never gets old.

Watched it at the then Easts Rugby Union Club in Braddon ACT, in a packed raucous crowd, then didn't really sleep that night. After the preceding near-quarter-of-a-century, the feeling was not too far short of that of a further third-of-a-century later!

Drank a slab of Melbourne Bitter with my Dad that night

Listening to Doug Heywood’s commentary

Yes those long forward handballs are back.

Got these in accessible media?

  • GAMEDAY: Richmond

It's Game Day on Friday night. ANZAC Eve. The big stage at the ‘G. The Demons return to the spotlight for one of our most significant nights on the football calendar, taking on the Tigers in a clash that always carries extra weight given the gravity of occasion of the commemoration of the ANZAC Spirit. Under the lights, in front of a packed house, this is where moments are made. Can the Dees rise to the occasion and deliver on the big stage, or will Richmond spoil the night? All the build-up, discussion, and in-game reactions here. Go Dees.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.

From the outset, the Casey Demons lacked any spring in their steps. They were out-hustled and out-bustled and finally outplayed by the Brisbane Lions by 38 points on their home turf in perfect conditions at Casey Fields.
