Can't believe I'd never heard that before!

I saw Austen perform his "Australiana" routine live one night before he became relatively well known and the 12" single (ask your parents) is still in my vinyl collection.

Haha yes I remember Footyana, great fun. I believe Austen is a Saints fan.

I don't remember 12" singles. Were they common? Also, played at 45 or 33 rpm?

Not an expert by any stretch but I believe they were commonly used in clubs for dance track singles? I'm sure someone knows more!

Billy Birmingham (the 12th man) wrote Australiana for Austen Tayshus I wonder if he had his fingerprints all over this one too?

12" singles were very common in the 1980s and usually featured an extended version of the song.  The sound quality was superior to both the 7" single and 12" LP formats.

They were usually 45rpm but occasionally one would be 33rpm which would make the record sound like it was The Chipmunks if you weren't paying attention to the label.

I've just dug out my "Australiana" 12" and I can tell you it cost me $3.98 and came complete with a sticker on the cover proclaiming Warning!  This Offensive Contains Language That Might Be A Record!

12 inch singles - the coolest of cool in the 80’s - and yes, I too have the “Australiana” 12 inch in my vinyl. collection - As I suspect many blokes of my vintage do!!

Try this one from memory lane.

This one goes back 102 years to this very day in 1920 — 26th May — and it doesn’t even involve Melbourne which had a bye in this particular round.

All four matches in the round were played on a Wednesday — to celebrate the visit by the Prince of Wales who later became Edward VIII before he abdicated to marry American divorcée, Wallis Simpson. In order to accommodate the visit, two of the games were played in the morning and the other two in the afternoon. 

Regrettably, the Prince’s boat was running late and didn’t arrive in Melbourne until the following day!

I wonder if there was much discussion in those days about the problem of having an odd number of teams and whether there was a big enough talent pool to allow a tenth team into the competition?

Keep in mind that this is two years after WW1, so many men of prime footballing age would either have died on the battlefield or returned with serious injuries, including what we now know as PTSD.

It features the Centre Diamond, which came into being in 1973 and was changed to the Centre Square in 1975.

On this day in history 103 years ago, Ivor Warne-Smith made his debut for the Demons in round 10, 1919 at the MCG against St Kilda. 

Warne-Smith had an incredible career for the Dees, winning two Brownlow Medals in 1926 and 1928, premiership in 1926 and was later named in Melbourne’s Team Of The Century!

I've kept all my vinyl from my wayward 80s teenage years, including LPs, EPs, 12" and 7" singles.

And believe it or not I have a 12" single version of Come on Demons that's been autographed by the great man himself, Jimmy Stynes.

Saturday night’s dramatic come-from-behind victory in the penultimate round of 2022 brought back memories of a similar win in the penultimate round 58 years ago.

Stinger in 52, and looking about a foot taller.
