my cousin tells me that once, when watching kowal run to the bench with more speed than he EVER showed on field, i screamed out "and keep running!!"

not a favourite of mine, it's fair to say

No he was not.

He was a handy player who played some very good games & got the most out of himself.

My understanding was the club tried to trade Kowal to a WA club to be able to gain a pre selection pick to be able to select a young indigenous boy from Healsville. Kowal refused to be traded. The young player went on to play over 200 games All Aust and premiership player. David Wirrpanda.

Haven't heard a word about him for quite a while. Anyone know anything.

Given we've only got picks 5 & 9 I assume if we are going to get him it will be in the rookie draft and if someone goes for him before that we can't do anything about it without going into debit in next year's draft.

He's not AFL standard in my opinion and I wouldn't be offering him a rookie spot.

Save it for Riak Andrew.

Darren Kowal was a great player.

We had the chance to let Kowal go to WC and we would have got David Wirrapunda……we lost on that arrangement. That stains my thoughts on Kowal.

Just noticed this has been said!

Ok I'm going to put this out once and only once because I don't have much if any experience of watching him.

Is the kid any good? Can he actually make it in the AFL?

I feel like there's a section of this place that just wants to see a team full of father/sons for the romanticism of it.

Impressed during pre-season training, outperforming some of our seasoned forwards.

Started the year well in the Coates league before an injury. Never kicked on upon his return.

His raw talent will see the club find a spot for him. Plays like Kyle Langford.

Well evidently the answer is going to be a wait and see for the Rookie Draft.

Id like to see Noah Rookie’d, he is a good size and has shown that he is a talented youngster, being an Yze I see it as repaying Adem in some small way for his great services to the Dees. We have more spots this year and can accommodate him and who knows he could be a ripper and it may help sway others in the years to come. I.e Dees respect the tradition of F/S’s.

Agree with should be rookieing Riak Andrew first. Has more X factor than Noah or Ricky Mentha.

I assume one or two rookies will be moved on to the main list so probably room for two rookies plus Mentha will be a Cat B rookie so won't effect this decision.

Thanks for that info makes the debate a lot clearer ITFA.

I always like your thinking DeeZone but I'd really hate it if this was just a nepotism pick. If he does have the raw materials that could be worked with and evenually fashioned into a decent AFL player then by all means we should take the punt but it's sounding like some of our NGA products might be worthy consideration for the rookie spot as well.

I think they changed the system so players can be Rookie listed ahead of the Rookie draft, so long as they were not bid on in the National Draft.

That would absolutely be the very last reason that we'd pick him up

Would be an insult to Adem and Noah, IMO

Club doesn't owe anyone with any special treatment.

Otherwise Nathan Jones would be a premiership player.

Regardless of whether you're son of a gun or not, I want to recruit players who show glimpse of being potential AFL standard.

I don't see it with Noah at all unfortunately.

Correct subject to Rule 8.8 (b) below.

Rule 8.8  Father/Son Rookie Pre-Selection

(a) Subject to Rule 8.8(b), where an eligible Father/Son Player has been nominated in accordance with Rule 8.4(b) and is not selected at a National Draft or PreSeason Draft Selection Meeting, the Club with whom he is eligible as a 54 Father/Son Player may include him on its Rookie List prior to the Rookie Draft Selection Meeting in accordance with Rule 10.4.

(b) Prior to the inclusion of a Player on its Rookie List under Rule 8.8(a), the Club must provide to the AFL written evidence of the Club’s and Player’s agreement to be listed as a Rookie. That agreement must specify that the Player can and will only be listed on the Club’s Rookie List if he is not selected by any Club at the National or Pre-Season Draft Selection Meeting.

Thanks.

So is that for F/S and NGA players?

Rule 15.8 (c) Rookie Pre-selection

If a Qualified NGA Player is eligible to be selected in the National Draft Selection Meeting and is not selected, the relevant Club may include the Player on its Rookie List prior to the Rookie Draft Selection Meeting by lodging Form 34A by the date required by the AFL.

It looks like you don't have to have that written agreement before the draft that if not selected they have to agree to be picked as a Rookie. Looks like that can be decided at the end of the draft. Although the rule requires the form to be lodged by a date required by the AFL so that could be earlier than the draft. Who knows.

if they elevate AMW from the rookie list he comes from Category B leaving two spots in that section of rookies.  Mentha one and the other can be also academy, international or other sport such as basketball.   We have no vacancies at the moment on the ordinairy A rookie list and I can't see anyone there being upgraded just for the sake of creating a vacancy.  If Hore goes then there is one vacancy.   More likely to select out of contract players after the draft or save a spot for mid year draft to fill the senior list.  So appears to me a choice of Yze or Hore unless they have their eyes on another cat A player.  If we do not get Derkson I don't see the rationale in getting rid of Thomlinson.  We don't need the senior spots as we have more spots than selections at the draft and we need a key defender to cover injuries.  I make no assessment on Adams but he is at least 2 years away from building a body and confidence.

Agree he looked comfortable in the match simulation in the pre-season.  He's got some good size too.

I thought we had no rookie picks? They have to be delisted free agents? Mentha is the only rookie pick we can have with Farris-White departing.

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
