The top sides who start pre season late might be disadvantaged, but they’ll deal with it.

This is exactly what the NFL have done. 17 games instead of 16.

Interesting from Tom Brown (in full-on bootlicker mode, which is not flattering) not to mention amongst the benefits ($$$) of an additional round the fact it would bring the game closer to an equal fixture. Shows where the priorities are, as if we didn't know.

Now if it was combined with a genuine "straight" draw I might go for it

 

I suspect it's all part of the plan to include a 19th team from Tassie. It would allow every team to play every other team once and have five double-up games as there are now.

I've always believed practice matches and pre-season games are both a waste of time and enthusiasm dampeners. I'd ban all practice and pre-season matches between AFL teams altogether. Everyone then goes into Round 1 with supporters not having their enthusiasm quashed by apparent poor practice match and pre-season form. If it were up to me, I'd do this, even if the season is kept at the current 22 matches spread over 23 rounds. 

Do we really believe that clubs are going to head into round 1 without a practice match? The NFL may have slotted in another game this year, but they still have three practice matches before round 1.

More likely the players are looking for ways to recoup the money they lost during COVID.

All practice matches should be intraclub

Round 1 should be the first time we play an opponent 

That Carlton Praccy was a complete waste of time

and they charged entry

The NFL has 8 home games per team each in a city of having populations between 2 and 10 million

We have ten Melbourne teams so in a 22 round season each Melbourne team is seen in Melbourne/Geelong 18/19 times.

The TV companies will like it but they won't pay more for the overall product as they are all bleeding cash.

Is any  game other than Anzac day a sellout?  Even the preliminary finals are rarely sell outs these days.

Why don't we just have a best of three/seven grand final

you need at least one proper hit out before round 1. intra clubs are fine but you never go in hard.  they made the change from 2-3 practice matches down to 1-2 which was good.  but you need at least 1.   just look how rusty we were in the first half against the blues, don't want that counting for points

Given the Top 8 statistically doesn't change much after about round 8 or 9 surely this is just another money grab?

But if everyone is equally rusty come round 1, does it matter?

Purely a cash grab.

A lot of teams really battle to play out 22 games. 23 would be an even greater stretch. 

We often play our best team in practice games but we do it to prepare their fitness for the real season and we always make a couple of in game changes and get key players some rest. Teams aren’t going to just roll in to round 1 either, they’re going to increase match play and contact earlier in the summer to prepare.

The fixture will never be fair. Even if it was play every team once there’d still be inequalities with breaks, suspensions, injuries, teams packing it in for the year etc.

If we wanted a fairer comp we’d got to 18 rounds not for playing every team once but to make the season shorter so every game has more riding on it and healthier players. 

22 home and away, with the potential for finals teams to play 25/26 is more than enough.

Lot to be said for this

You could throw in three byes for 6 teams at a time. They would be in consecutive weeks thus not impacting greatly on the inntegrity of the ladder

TV companies would pay the same money as they would still have a 20 odd week home and away product so that's not an issue. With the extra byes more teams would have a chance of Friday night exposure

Would the absence of so called blockbusters greatly impact attendance. Can't see it as the Derbies would still be played and each of the current blockbusters would also be played. Most of the confected dates could be retained given that there are probably around 5/6 melbourne blockbusters.

I think the AFL have been shown with AFLW this year that more does not necessarily mean better.

And it makes even more sense if you want to add Tasmania

PS There's also the impact on the VFL. It's already a compromised under funded and under resourced competition. Another senior round would do nothing but add yet another bye to that comp.

Surprised the AFL haven’t tried using that proposed rd 24 week idea as a wildcard round for finals - not that I think it’s a good idea either . If you finish 9th or 10th you don’t deserve to be vying for the premiership.

Classic practice match analysis...if we win, the match meant something, if we lost, the match was meaningless.

The Carlton game was rendered irrelevant by the umpiring. Imagine if that had been Round 1

against North the Team had a real crack at what they were capable of. 
Against Carlton it was “go at 70% and don’t get injured”
