There are a few players vying for a few spots on the ground. It seems most of our 22 is locked in but, I'll pose a few head to heads just to get some discussion happening on what your ideal 22 looks like:

Hunt vs Hibberd

Tomlinson vs Petty or both (when fully fit)

Mcdonald vs Weideman

Sparrow vs Jordon vs Dunstan

Don't see them as like for like.

Hibberd will play round 1 based on recent form

If he drops form as the season goes on not sure what will happen.

Last year you would have said Hore was waiting but he's gone.

Of course if you're a Smith fan then perhaps he's the replacement.

I have my rnd 1 team based on the practice game. It's a bit controversial as I don't have Bowey in the 22.

B: J.Smith, May, Lever

HB: Salem, Tomlinson, Hibberd

C: Brayshaw, Petracca, Langdon

HF: Neal-Bullen, McDonald, Pickett

F: Fritsch, B.Brown, Spargo

FOLL: Gawn, Oliver, Viney

IC: Harmes, Jackson, Rivers, Sparrow

SUB: Bowey

Smith Sub, Bowey back pocket and I think you have the rest spot on.

Holy cow! Don’t have a clue who my whipping boy is going to be this year given that team. If i was an opposition supporter I would  poo myself.

You have me questioning my sanity W'dee, I so rarely agree with you. I would have JJ as Sub however, Bowey is no where as flexible as JJ.

backline & midfield depth is off the charts.

If Weid/JVR step up, and one of the developing wingers, we will have first class depth all over the ground. Which hopefully keeps everyone hungry & fighting hard to keep their spot (or break into the team)

Think u might be spot on. Always thought that Bowy will lose his place when someone bigger with equivalent skills comes along. In the longer term ie later this year, l think Hunt is the ideal replacement.

Bowey for Harmes and Jordan for J. Smith ( who in my book is not up to scratch as an AFL player (yet) )

Swap Bowey for Smith or Jordan and that's about it.

No one executes " equivalent skills" as Bowey has in 7 games.  Throwing him out for an average practice game?

Smith has made as many mistakes each game as Bowey has in 7 games.

Can't compare even Hunty as his disposal is nowhere near Bowsers.

I would like to see Smith play early which is not to criticise Bowey or Rivers.

I just feel we have only scratched the surface  with him and he has a lot to offer the team in terms of intercept marking, run out of the backline and he's a decent kick

Weid would have to play out of his skin against Carlton to have a chance to dislodge TMac for Round 1.

If he does this its a good problem to have.

For the first round I usually go with last years team until they stuff up.

So the premiership side with Tomlinson/Smith for Petty (inj).

Nothing startling there.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
