Took the words from my mouth DD. I might be old school but I find it ridiculous that you would use a podcast like theirs as a forum to announce something so important.

Maybe it's a new climate and things are going this way with retirements being announced over Twitter and all that crap but I'd like to think there is still some professionalism in the way things like this get done.

I'd prefer the traditional method as well

This is all BS. The talk that Brayshaw doesnt know what he wants is ludicrous. He knows exactly what he wants as he would have advised his management on the parameters of what he would find acceptable.

In most cases that primary factor is $$$ and years or total contract value. Everything else is secondary unless of course you are from WA.

The interview this morning was 1 of 2 things. 1 he is signed up and was throwing off the media to release the news via his podcast. It sounds cheesy, but this is exactly what i would expect him to do. Or 2. he is trying to squeeze every last dollar out of MFC now that he probably knows LJ is gone and there is money to go around.

The challenge for MFC is having enough $$$ to attract talent into the club to fill the LJ void plus for anyone coming out of contract next year. So presumably they would incrementally up the offer until a middle point is reached. It would take a monumental f.up for Brayshaw to walk. He has previously said, he loves the club, loves his team mates etc. So the ball is squarely in MFC's court to close it.

Your last two sentences are right on the money. Brayshaw as with Viney has every right to get the right deal for him and that is what he is working towards. He is probably after an extra $100K and extra year.

I think the list Mngt will work it out with him, as hopefully they are  not too far apart on terms.

Fortunately he continues to play really well.

If we can get an assurance from the AFL that the compo would be end of the first round then I’m more than happy to let Gus go. In fact I’d say it would be the prudent move.

We’ve got 3 defenders on A grade coin, plus Petty.

We’ve got a ruck and mids on top line money, plus Viney and Langdon.

We have to use money and picks to lure key forwards/high impact forward half players. Jackson (staying or) going is part of that, but more can’t hurt.

He’s doing a lot of good things this year but he’s still at best our 5th most important defender and there’s no point breaking the pay scale for that position. Not when Bowey and Rivers are premiership players, Hunt is capable and defensive depth can be found in the draft.

He’s not going to get any faster or become a good kick. Those flaws aren’t going away. We should offer him a deal in line with his role in the side and be ok if other teams are willing to go way beyond that.

You are kidding right? Gus is likely to finish top 3 in the BnF as the season stands. You'd prefer a draft pick in the early 20's after F/S and academy picks?

Bowey, Rivers and Hunt don't play anything like Gus in defence.

Use the pick to lure key forwards you say. Like Who?

At the start of the year I would have agreed with you, but Gus is important to this team on and off the field.

I dunno, it's a new climate I guess. I would also prefer people don't take the micky out of things like a contract extension but it was mentioned before that it is an official MFC podcast with advertising and stuff like that. It's all cool and hip and Ali G to be doing it this way and we're the dinosaurs 😜

The whole announcing that you have re-signed on a podcast is seriously the most laughable thing I've seen written. How people have fallen for this is truly amazing.

When a player signs a new contract, a club has to draft up a statement of confirmation. This statement is then released via club media having ticked off for approval from club stakeholders before release.

The statement is also released via email to members, stakeholders and sponsors. This is called being professional.

Announcing a major resigning on a podcast that's pre recorded is the complete opposite to go about it.

Daz in all honesty I couldn’t care less how he announces it I just want him to announce that he has signed on with us.

He’s been very good this year but a lot of that’s because Lever and Salem have been missing. When Lever’s intercepting and Salem is rebounding what role does Gus fill that isn’t somewhat redundant? And - just as JJ has filled Gus’ wing role I can see Rivers with another preseason slotting back in to his best and growing his game. Bowey obviously won’t be as good in the air but otherwise does everything else Gus does and more.

The compensation is a pick and 600k? 700k? 750k? It’s means to bring in 2 good players (one pick, one free agent) or one very good one in more of a need. Or we could get creative, trade the pick backwards, split the salary and bring in 4 useful players and drastically improve our depth.

We’ve apparently sniffed around key forwards this year. Until McStay is signed, sealed and delivered to Collingwood we’d be silly not to be involved. I’d also be willing to miss out for a year next year and land someone for 2024

Edit: I have no interest in off the field either. The players all know the realities of the business and that there’s a number at which it isn’t worth matching. If we’re relying on Gus to sell memberships then we’re in trouble.

I think you are off the mark here.  Gus has been our best performing back all year and his marking, kicking and courage have been an absolute highlight for me this year.   He is expected to pull off some tough kicks at stages and this sometimes hurts his kicking reputation.  I think his kicking is very good, he kicks both feet which he uses to his advantage and he is going at 75% efficiency which is excellent.  Just as a comparison both Oliver and Trac are at mid 50’s and Pendlebury who is playing a similar role is going at 69 %.  It’s a myth that he is not a good kick.

You do realise that if we lose Gus as a Free Agent, then we don't get a compensation pick if we get a Free Agent into the club, who's in the same wage bracket. So there goes your idea of getting a compensation pick and McStay.

I think you are taking DS a little out of context. I took from his post that he knows Gus is worth more than a late first round pick.

But is more talking about how much money do we have to tie up for a player, that we can actually replace (do have strong depth in Gus’ key positions).

is tough without all the facts, but if signing Gus meant we couldn’t get the forward/ruck players we need, then his point is valid.

Not sure you can compare the kicking efficiency of 2 of the most contested inside mids in the game, and a loose half-back flanker, who primarily wins uncontested ball.

Comparison with Pendles more valid, but he still plays a % of his time in the middle also.

all that said, without doubt Gus’ kicking has improved this year, but he is still not elite

This reminds me of the all conquering Bombers of the mid '80s. After winning the 84 and 85 premierships, they traded away 2 heart and soul players in Bradbury and Carey for big name players in Raines and Michael Richardson. They went into freefall.

Gus is a heart and soul player. He's more important to the team than just a draft pick or a fictitious forward/ruck from another club.

Fair call. But, I think the degree to which he is heart and soul will be revealed by how he plays his contract situation from here.

The club has made it clear they want to keep him, and many other players haven’t squeezed the club to get their absolute top $, so lets see how Gus plays it.

Might be a little cynical, but for mine a heart and soul player doesn’t come out after R19, and say I am not sure if I want to be here next year yet.

Jack Viney was in the same position, and there were plenty of Demonland posters that were prepared to let him go. I consider Viney and Gus as equally important to the fabric of the club.

If we do it all in one year or as a direct trade, then yes, I should've said that. If we use the pick this year and the cap space next year it can be a 2 for 1.

I'd be very happy with McStay for Brayshaw straight up.

Franklin, Rance, Brandon Ellis, Gary Ablett Jnr. All of those left great sides that won premierships after they left.

You really think Brayshaw and McStay are footballing equals?

That’s quite revealing.

Champion Data is the myth, not Gus' kicking. His left hasn't been much use since his first two seasons. You aren't really dual sided if you don't hit targets with it. His efficiency is mostly because CD grade any long kick that goes to a 50/50 as efficient and because Gus will kick it long or short and wide. He rarely uses the corridor or makes aggressive switches and he flat out can't kick on the run, his technique falls apart. He also doesn't provide line breaking or corridor run. Watch him receive the ball by dropping back or sweeping wide, that's useful at times, but doesn't result in quick counter attacking. Our game plan is to go wide and safe out of the back half, but there's still a way that Salem when at his best will demand or win the ball and move it on quickly enabling counter attack.

Eh this thread is just like the Jackson one; Hero 'fans' potting the players skills and value in an attempt to soften their own personal blow if they are to leave us.

Totally agree it’s amazing that they’re superstars until the talk starts about them leaving

Roughly equal. Gus would be of more value to a team without intercepting defenders (and at least theoretically more valuable as a midfielder if given free reign of a midfield with no defensive duties).

McStay doesn’t get much of the ball or do much with it but his ability to halve contests and pressure for a tall are both incredibly valuable to modern footy. Even more so to a side that plays like us. Even more so when the player who did that role for us (T Mc) is nearing the end and battling numerous injuries (although that’s a risk for McStay too).
