We hold Pick 17 in the draft (likely 19 after F/S picks) so I thought it was time to start a thread on this potential recruit.

A key position player who can play at either end of the ground. Probably more known as a forward, but was named at CHB in the 2021 National U/18's team.

From Claremont in WA hopefully he could be a vital cog in the future with all of B. Brown, M. Brown, McDonald, May and Tomlinson 28 or over at the start of next year.

Cal Twomey had him at 21 in his phantom draft and said this about him.

Van Rooyen kicked the winning goal for Western Australia against South Australia in the under-19s clash last weekend having drifted forward late after spending most of the game in defence. It is that versatility which has improved the Claremont product's stocks across the year. van Rooyen played at senior level earlier this season whilst battling glandular fever but his past two months have impressed with his work ethic and capacity to play in key positions.

This has to be the strategy in the draft. Midfielders are a dime a dozen. But a KP player is always hard to come by. Somebody of the McKay or Logan ilk will have the perfect opportunity to develop under our system and will be ready to go in 2-3 years time without being rushed in like his predecessors. 

We have a few years to get this right and still have Weid as a backup. But for the sake of longevity and continued success this is the area we need to have longer term solution for.

JVR. Good call. It’s a Yes from me. Need to consider key position forwards. He looked like a talent in the WA-SA game. Definitely a good strategy to grab him if available and then be comfortable that he would have at least 2 years development.  I would see him as a assume the Tmcd role in my view as an agile CHF for 2024.  

However I’m still prefer PICK 17 selection on a fast running mid as a need for our continued improvement like a Mitch Owens or Campbell Chesser.  Though not disappointed if it’s used on JVR.

You might want to ask the Saints what they think about that.

I hope we get Van Rooyen. With Woewodin jnr coming through as midfielder as a late pick, we should look at drafting a key forward.

 some have said Josh Rachele could be another option, but we already have Laurie with similar attributes and skill sets IMO.

My view is that we're already getting access to two midfielders in Woewodin and Moniz-Wakefield. Throw in the recruitment of Dunstan and most of our midfielders are in their prime, I don't see the need to draft another mid here.

Van Rooyen can play either end and will have time to develop. We have 5 key position players who are 28 and over (7 if you include Gawn & Daw in the ruck). We should take this opportunity to draft a promising young tall.

Jason Taylor has also said in an interview they will be looking for a young development ruckman.

But Frittata really thrives when he is one cog in the wheel, with a couple of taller and or stronger colleagues.

I think this makes sense.  With Tomlinson back it should give some flexibility too - Petty has also shown the ability to play forward as well as back.  

Whoever we draft should at least get a year in the system at Casey learning the game plan, developing the right habits so that they are ready to go if called upon.  Exciting stuff!

I wonder whether our decision to keep Majak is an indication that there's a reasonable chance that won't happen this year?  I guess even if we did draft one, we wouldn't want them smashed in the VFL every week in any case.

Interested to see how JVR performed at the combine.  He had a great year and definitely in the mix for our “pick 17”. 

Looks a real prospect but would he be available at pick 17.

JVR actually reminds me of Jack Watts in his Under 18s year.  Strong mark. Athletic.  Can play back but much better as a forward.  Good ability to run up and back and use endurance.  
 

I think JVR would be in much better hands for his development now and certainly much less pressure.

Anyone who reminds you of Jack Watts would not get close to being drafted by the current Melbourne organisation. He had minimal physical presence in the air for a 195 odd cm tall. We don't draft players like that now.

Yeah, I agree, but I don't see Weid as a recruit by our current crop..

They'd see right through Weid.

I’m still liking the look of this player. I see that he seems to be drifting out of the estimation of the draft gurus. Cal Twomey has him at 21.

He was drafted by Taylor in the same draft as Oliver. I fail to see how he isn't categorised as a recruit of the Taylor era.
