As a paid up member of the Dad jokes guild I give him points for trying.

But if that joke was on his guild application it would be stamped DO NOT ALLOW TO JOIN - EVER.

A Dad joke does not have to be funny to others (just to the teller).

But it at the very least has to make some sort of sense!

I mean, 'the last time Melbourne fans experienced. 5.9 was the earthquake"?

Huh?

If it was Round 7 at 3.20 on a Sunday fair enough. It's a Grand Final, just call the bastard. Brayshaw a good example of dialling down the usual antics for a big occasion.

Pains me to say, because normally he's a [censored], but I have to agree.

He was pretty good, in part because as you say he dialed things down and dropped the blokey blokey shctick.

In fact I reckon he was the best caller. Including daisy, who I have to say annoys me more the more I listen to the game. She gets the third quarter so wrong in my humble. Rediscovered our dare? Please.

Ironically BT was the closest to getting it right in the third when he said just before Daniel slung Max, something like the dees were just one goal away from going on a run. Though it was with no context, and we were yet to score that q, so he may have just said it as a random comment. No one responded to him.

I must say IMO it was Uncle James' best game ever.

The 3rd option can often be the best.

Cometti was entertaining and incisive, a big loss to the game.

So, no I wouldn't prefer Bruce or BT...give me Dennis.

In fairness, Brooooce way back in his heyday, was pretty good, but sadly became almost creepy in his final years in the job.

I remember that well and I am absolutely certain he meant to say Bulldogs, but as he does most games, said the wrong team.

Have seen the quarter many times and I have no doubt he meant to say Dogs

This is true! And not just for calling Rioli ‘delicious’ which was creepy enough. One time while calling a game he mentioned that a certain player - can’t recall who - sleeps with five pillows. Then he proceeded to elaborate: one pillow under his head, one between his knees, one between his ankles etc. I think it was Richo, not sure, who said, ‘Geez, Bruce, how on earth do you know that?!’ Bruce didn’t answer, which just served to make it all the more creepy.

There was a game earlier in the year maybe against Carlton because I know it was  a game I watched on tv because I couldn't get to the G and we were winning & BT is saying gosh even the Melbourne supporters are bored of winning, they are just sitting there & they don't make any noise then just kept going on and on about it.

But I still never forget and I'm not sure from memory if it was on the Sunday Footy Show or on triple m but it was many many years ago when he gave lip to spud and saying oh you only could produce daughters, no father sons.

The feed would be exactly the same as it currently is - sans commentary

That's to say you currently hear the crowd and the umpire mics.

......

Is that true? I reckon we only hear a fraction of what the umpires say or the whistle blowing volume.  And I don't think it is because it is simply drowned out by BT's bliterhing.  I assume they wind it down and up?

That call of BT's somewhere during our second half onslaught where he exclaims that "the noise level of this crowd should be illegal" drives me insane.

Yes goes with his ridiculous claim that no one left the ground in the last 30 minutes……how could he possibly know?.Said oh so dogmatically too. He is a fool!

An easy solution to this is to just have Daisy commentate the game. Everything she said was bang on (Hodgey was pretty good as well - he quickly identified how we were killing them out the front of the center bounces during our run-on).

Not particularly interested in footy for women and related associations. Always regarded it as too physically demanding and perilous. However, since hearing more of Daisy's commentry and her very apt interpretations of what is occurring on the field of play, I have changed 180 degrees - Daisy is an authority on football matters. I look forward to her astute contributions alongside insights into the Mighty Dees / MFC.

One problem with BT's commentary is he always sounds like he is barracking for the opposition team no matter what club you support. Any gameday thread on BigFooty will confirm this.

Not sure how BT got the gig but you do have to cater for a widest audience as possible.  That Raving Brian segment he used to do did not appeal to me at all but I am sure there are some out there who liked it....Provided he has a competent caller next to him I can live with it.

I dislike James Brayshaw as a 'media personality' but his call of the GF was excellent. Best special comments are Daisy and Leppa.

What I dont like is when commentators talk so much they miss the game eg Gawns goal out of the ruck.

No you're right, they def change the levels of the umps mics.

And they could continue to so do, even if there was no feed from the commentary box

LOL Idk if you deliberately named it ‘Raving’ rather than ‘Roving’ which was its real name. Regardless, you’re probably closer to the truth. 😆

I've changed 360 degrees on Daisy.

I just do not understand the lack of love for Bwiaaaan. He's articulate, super knowledgeable about the game, respectful of others - especially women and umpires, has a fine footy intellect, can easily discern the ebb and flow of the game, is partial to the Deez, thoughtfully considers comments before he opens him mouth, played for two great and respected clubs and behaves with dignity and love at all times.

He has his place as a TV performer but he should be doing light-hearted stuff and definitely not calling games.

For the most part, ex-players shouldn't be calling the big moments. A bit of colour commentary here and there is fine but leave those moments to the professionals.

Yes, but could they couldn't do it in time to wind down the player's swearing.  Personally I'd prefer swearing to BT.

To play devil's advocate, maybe this isn't entirely BT's fault. There is culpability, but there could be something being said upstairs.

While not a 'sport', an entire generation of WWE announcers have either walked out or been bullied from the announce booth thanks to Vince McMahon ranting and raving on the other end of the headset about how they are supposed to be 'sports entertainment story tellers' rather than commentate on the action in the ring. Wrestlers are to be called 'superstars'. Pro wrestling is 'sports entertainment'. Never ever use pronouns; announcers are required to use the wrestler's name under all circumstances when referring to them. Not to mention all the waffle about social media, the WWE's catchphrase of the moment and the focus group tested nicknames they give the wrestlers.

Don't be surprised if BT is given some form of marching orders by some MBA [censored] who doesn't like footy, but has reams of marketing data and a love of faux blokey aesthetics.

Absolutely this. It was obvious how he completely changed his style when he moved from Saturday night to Friday night. On Saturdays, he was clearly being asked to impose his blokey style to suit that particular format. On Fridays, he is much more "straight" albeit without losing his essential style. I don't think he's a particularly good caller, but he's also not particularly bad and he's certainly not biased towards or against any team.

The style of commentary is very much dictated by the expectations and requirements of the program's producers and always will be.

And I give him credit for two things. He's very good at promoting (and sometimes critiquing) the umpires, rather than allowing them to be ignored. And he put in a surprisingly good acting performance as a fictional NT footy coach in the movie "Last Cab to Darwin".

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
