I doubt Christian Petracca, who has significant media training, would openly joke about LJ's contract on TV with him there if he didn't believe he was going to sign. I still believe he will sign, but there's a lot of negotiating still to be done.

I mean, Luke Beveridge has had significant media training too...

Not looking to ruffle feathers or swirl anything around, but is it really just between us and WA clubs? There could be godfather offers coming from all over the place much like a Judd situation back in the day.

Personally I agree with the 2-3 year route and I think it's a smart avenue to take as the club, save the ego contract for the next one.

Schwarz has been quoted in the hun saying he's a million a year player.  While that is probably true it doesn't help the media speculation and can only drive his price up further.

Schwarz bleeds red and blue so definitely not questioning his loyalty... but has done enough media work to know how it works - why add fuel to the fire?

Ironically, Jackson is quickly becoming the sort of player that we thought Schwarz might become (obviously with the added ability of playing in the ruck).  I still remember Schwarz taking hold of sides in late '94 and thought we missed a once in a generation player with his injuries. Amazingly Schwarz was 22 in 1994.  Scary to think where Jacko will be when he gets to 22 at the rate he is going!

The only way I see him throwing away a golden chance at multiple flags is if he’s really really home sick.

Someone who is really really home sick doesn’t play the way he has been playing though.

If he does decide to go to a WA team, what do we look to get in return?

I’d say a minimum of two top 5 picks and good young player like an Andrew Brayshaw or Oscar Allen.

I agree but how do these teams get 2 top 5 picks?
They will probably have one. Freo may not even have that.
It’s a problem for us that he’s out of contract. Doesn’t leave us much leverage except that North is the most likely team to win the spoon…if West Coast get a sniff that he’s a chance they might even try to get that spoon off North, but it seems highly unlikely. They’re a better team than North when at full strength and still have an epic home ground advantage

I have always believed that had Swarta not got injured we may have jagged a Flag in the 1990's  say 98 perhaps.

Formally known as tanking.  Still can't believe we are the only club to ever be sanctioned for tanking.

WCE would need to off load players to fit him in.  Their salary cap has been busting at the seems and they would need to off load a player like Gaff or Yeo to fit him in.

Freo might have the space in their cap, but even with the poor performance yesterday you still expect them to be 7-12th on the ladder.

Yeah and ultimately these are my thoughts too. Crazy to think about though, just hope we've got enough in the kitty to keep him happy.

Tim Kelly went alright before going home, and you could even talk about Hogan never finding form again after going home.

Multiple top 2 picks might not be enough. He has so much potential.

I believe that we may need to implement a campaign based on the old doggies "keep Chris Grant the the club" by asking 10 year old kids to write in to him. He wouldn't be able to resist. Would he?

1) offer him something between a) what he is worth  - b) what we can afford.

2) make sure we offer him all the support available to become the best player he can be

3) be consistent with all the other players on the list to ensure we have on field success

If he wants to leave after these things are done then there isn't anything in the clubs control.

We are beyond needing a 'savior' or a player we screw our salary cap over. Don't pay him overs. We would get 2 first round picks for him and yes, we would lose the trade.

Honestly, if he doesn't want to play for this club during this period then I would very reluctantly say goodbye.

To be fair though I don't think Tim Kelly was home sick as much as he needed to go home for family reasons. Those are different things.

Feeling lonely, isolated and missing home is very different to having external family pressure to return home because of a partner/child/parent, which is also where Hogan was (and having cancer would not have helped!).

I highly doubt Jackson, who is 21 and has no long term partner or kids, would be feeling any pressure from his family to return home, when they can see what a successful career he's forging at Melbourne. He also has great connections at the club, having come across with Rivers who is an old mate.

There will always be noise that he's 'going home', because every super talented player born in WA gets that sort of attention. But there has never been a single indication that he was wanting to return to WA. He said on the Gus and Gawny podcast last year that he loves Melbourne, he keeps gushing about the team, the culture and working under Gawny. Why would you go out of your way to say those things if you were missing home?

For me the only reason he hasn't signed is because his management team knows how much his worth will continue to increase, and the club is obviously trying to put long term deals in front of him, which is not a wise move for someone of his age and calibre to sign. As much as I wish he would sign a 10 year deal, the reality is he should sign for 2 and then get even more money.
I also think that if the club didn't think they were a strong chance to retain him, they would have entertained the Cerra for Jackson trade last year, as we were very much into Cerra.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but I don't think any of us can make assumptions based on what is said publicly, we all know how much that means in the wash up. I think he'll probably stay, but I reckon there's a fair bit of self-convincing going on in this thread based on no real evidence.

And the same can be said for the MCFSS going on in this thread too.

There has been more real evidence that Jackson is happy at Melbourne, than evidence that he's home sick and is dying to play for mediocre sides.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
