Thought I'd clarify that i would rather see Weid stay and take a leaf out of Tmac's pre season book and under go a massive transformation.

It can't be on his terms this time round at the contract table i must say, this might be an issue if there is a downgrade on his contract but he hasn't kicked on after that Elimination Final.

He's been backed in by all the coaching staff and it hasn't worked out for one reason or another, i expect the club to stand by him though.

I reckon he'll sign on for another 2 years until free agency kicks in then re evaluate his affairs like most players are doing these days.

If he is happy to sign on reduced terms then we keep him - struggles in his contract year and can be better - but not the long term solution we hoped he would be.

Just because someone is a taller player doesn't mean they should be afforded x amount of time by default, Max from his fourth season was trending upwards in a very clear, and obvious way. we've not seen that with Weid, he's still doing the same things as year 1 

 

We'd be crazy to let him go unless we have a viable replacement. While he hasn't developed as much and as quickly as people would have liked he is still AFL capable and on his day can be pretty handy. And 24 year old KPFs don't grow on trees. What if one of our tall forwards goes down? Look at Josh Bruce yesterday, it can happen and probably will. Weid can walk in and play a key forward role as well as help out in the ruck.

I disagree.

Season by season, up until this year when he has been behind Brown and TMac, he has played more games every year.

He also cracked the top 10 in the Bluey in 2020 and was in our top 5 for distance covered per game.

I didn't say Weid should be allowed limitless time to develop, but pretty clearly there's a lot of context behind his development, his injuries and his opportunities, which is why I raised the example of Gawn.

Jason Taylor made it pretty clear Weid was a longer term project when he was drafted.

No one would be harder on his form this year than the Weid himself. He's clearly a confidence type of player.

I still think we should hang on to him, 2 years is my preference, at the right price. He is still young enough to break through to becoming a regular contributor and has shown to be capable.

Would be great to see Choco and Ooze succeed in driving him towards success. I believe he can do it.

Understand some players take longer to develop, would be a shame if some other club got the benefit. 

Tmac/BBB seemingly have a few years left and need to wonder how much game-time he'll get if he stays. 

But as always you need to keep an eye on the future and an eye on the salary cap as well so hopefully something can be worked out.

Would be cruel yet typical scenario if we lost Jacko and Weid and miss out on Mac Andrew

If Weid doesn't make it as a KPF he'll make it as a KPB.  We could do with that flexibility.  Petty has been very good this year as a KPB but he has also shown some ability forward.  Three years from now we'll probably have vacancies at both ends.

Yeah, would be a shame to lose him mostly due to our key position depth atm for his age. I wouldn't blame him if he moved on for a better chance of senior game time though. Whether he stays or goes though, I'd like to see us draft or trade in a young key forward for the future.

Big reason to be permanently recruiting, now. Also, a good opportunity for some we have, still developing. My eye, in particular, will be on Joel Smith stepping in (to a less than full fwd role) in the forward line structure and basically, being let loose to win the ball. Petty is a noted aspirant to a fwd opportunity - his time in the backline has been useful - and eventually, Tomlinson will return. Blood these two young 'uns with a view to filling potential gaps with TMac and the Weed next season. Even then, we still have other options if recruitment of a/some 'likely type/s' does/do not eventuate.

We seem to have plenty pushing Weid out the door but not Smith.

Given our lack of options, we probably keep them both, until better is available.

Weid rarely takes contested marks, and very often drops the ball cold, even 1 out. If he could not be a Lever type by reading the play and intercepting, he would need to be a shutdown defender. Petty is all over him in this regard. He is improving as fast as Weid is regressing.

 

Trade while the trading is good.

Yes, that's when an idiotic FD and coach thought Max was a forward and had Spencer ahead of him in the ruck at Casey and whenever he played a senior game either Jamar or Spencer were the go to's with Max doing a bit of relief.

This is where averages are a furphy.

Would love to see the stats of how often the above are targeted for a marking contest. I would imagine Weid would have had plenty of opportunities compared to others.

I think there's lots of areas where he could improve, one of them is his marking on the lead, but I think it gets massively overcooked on Demonland.

I'd bet 3/4 of Demonland has said we've given Smith enough chances at one stage or another.

He doesn't get a mention because he doesn't play. Out of sight out of mind.

He reminds me of a young key we drafted many years back who had a chest like a trampoline. Only lasted a couple of seasons.

His name will come to me....
