Imagine the lack of productivity at work in the whole of September if we win this Preliminary Final. No work will get done at all.

I think this pre GF bye is a terrible idea.

It’s a momentum killer. Besides that it means two weeks of angst as opposed to one. And lockdown exacerbates this. No chance of successful distraction during lockdown. 😞

Maybe we'll bring Hibberd in for Bowey, allowing May, Petty and Smith to take Hawkins, Cameron and Ratugolea, Hibberd goes to Rohan, and that lets Lever run free? Rivers and Salem with Clark/Miers?

Does Hibberd allow a bit more flexibility than Bowey for a taller Geelong forward line?

Its a tough one but iΒ reckon Smith for Hibberd need Bowser's ball distribution andΒ cool head down back.

With three talls plus Rohan, I don’t think there is any chance of SmithΒ being dropped. We need to free up Lever as much as possibleΒ

I just can't see Geelong winning in the middle.Β  Selwood has been poor for a while; rated one of the worst vs GWS.Β  Parfitt out.Β  Connors out (breathe easy Clayton), Duncan just getting some match practice, Dangerfield has broken fingers.Β  Stanley needs to back up a good game last week which was against a battered Mumford.Β  They are patching up their midfield on the run with new additions each week.Β  Stanley, Danger and Selwood had a great 20 minutes vs us in round 23.Β  Cameos really.

We will need most of Viney, Gawn, Oliver, Langford, Petracca and Brayshaw to have poor games to lose the mid-field battle.

Just. Won't. Happen.

Agree. he can take any of their talls, with the exception of Hawkins, so offers terrific flexibility.

And his speed and ability to cover ground will be important on the expanses of Optus Oval, particularly given the cats are likely to try and spread our defenceΒ (eg by switching before kicking inside 50) to engineer one on ones.

However IF we win i could see a scenario where Smith makes way for Hunt.Β

I think the only danger of us losing on Friday is Geelong winning the centre clearances Β by a lot and give their forwardsΒ quick looks.

Looking forward to another mongrel animal game from Viney to prevent this from happening.

In support of an animal game from Viney, I have noticed again in the second footage of training for this week (far background only, not the sharp-focussed foreground) that Majak is training in body work and recovery with the big boys of the team. This may be an interesting observation. I have visions of the unexpected Hawkins shut-down, releasing May a little to a more advantageous role with forward penetration (his kicking can be sublime) and to ease potential moves by Geelong to drop in resting rucks and/or talls as forward targets. Could all be speculation, but it still crosses the mind.

There is no crossing of the mind.

No way is Majak Daw playing in a Preliminary Final.

Β

I'd suggest no change; go in with 22 match-fit players.

If the cats want to go 4 tallΒ in the forward line then let May, Lever, Petty and Smith bring it to ground, Salem, Rivers and Bowey dissecting the cats on the rebound.

I have this feeling they will stick with Bowey,Β who is the best user of the ball in the team, with Salem next best. We need good ball use off half back to set up opportunities. I think they might go with Hunt instead of Smith, as he is just a better footballer and faster and swing a surprise matchup. Could they use Hunt on Rohan, orΒ even Cameron, who is not really a pack mark, but more an opportunistic running forward? It is an interesting decision for the selectors. If we back our mids and pressure, then the 4 Cats talls could be starved of clean ball and with good distribution from the back half you create multiple opportunities.

BTW Rohan is the same height as Rivers and Hunt and Smith is just not asΒ good a footballer as them. IMO Smith brings our talent down.Β

Yeah I think we'll go unchanged this weekend.

A random question but are they allowing a banner to be made as a run through? Obviously the Demon Army can’t get over there but if local Dees fans can do it would it be permitted? It’s just be great to see the boys run through a banner!

Can’t see it as both teams still in 14 day Quarantine is my understanding so getting on to the ground would be the issue I believeΒ

But neither are really one on one defenders. Both need freedom to run off their man and float as interceptorsΒ

I like that....dissect CatsΒ  :)

I still find it interesting Melbourne & Geelong have never met in a Grand Final being the 2 x oldest clubs.

(Cats and Dogs have never played off in one either for that matter).

22 dropped this week. Rosebury and Mollison the ins. Suspect we get the 2 surviving umps from the Cats game and add Rosebury.Β

God I hope 22 (Nathan Williamson) is not umpiring this week, He has zero feel for the game and always pays those weird block free kicksΒ that have no impact on the game or the contest. super inconsistent with how he officiates insufficient intent too.

Perfect lineup would be Rosebury, Chamberlain and Stevic.Β
Donlon and Meredith are pretty decent too

I am scared out of my brains. For football I have never known fear like this before. The fact that this is our best chance to win a premiership in this lifetime and the possibility that this might be our last game for the season is terrifying. I’m almost too fearful to watch the game

Love this post.

I think you speak for a lot of us Cassiew, and this lockdown/isolation stuff is really not helping anyone. Such a pity its not at a packed MCG where we could release the fear and trepidation with almighty screams !

Finals are where legends are born.

Deep breaths....

Ball use is very important. But equally line breaking pace is very important against a slow and aging Geelong.Β
Given Geelong are going tall, Smith will need to stay. I would bring in Hunt if fully fit for Bowey.Β
Prelims are a big jump in intensity. Bowey is a kid and did look a little nervous against Brisbane (which is totally understandable). Against a very experienced opponent I would prefer Hunt.Β

Why get nervous? It won't help the team win.

There is absolutely no way we will, or should, play Majak Daw this week.

He was always a break glass in case of emergency list addition. There is no emergency.

Which is why Smith is important against the cats becuase he can go one on one againstΒ Rohan and/or Cameron, as he did in round 23.

Got my tickets. Go Dees!

To put it simply, we win the battle in the middle and we are in our first GF in 21 years.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak.Β Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.Β
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards?Β Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?Β
