I remember Akermanis started becoming a burden on the club despite his footballing ability (different reasons but similar d-head issues). Leon Cameron and the leaders at the club need to pull him aside and in no uncertain terms tell him to pull his head in.

You always want to see the best players out there, some of them get unlucky due to injury but when they’re their own worst enemy it really does your head in.

AFL considering appealing the penalty, apparently.

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/08/31/mclachlan-perplexed-by-greene-ban-as-afl-considers-appeal/

I suspect the AFL won't appeal. To do so could have the perverse consequence of Greene being found not guilty (unless the appeal can be solely about the penalty).

The AFL appealed the Houli 2 week ban because they thought it was 'manifestly inadequate'.  The ban was increased to 4 weeks on appeal.

Not sure how the appeal rules work but it looks like they were able to challenge the sentence without risk of overturning the guilty verdict.

I like the idea of each subsequent guilty verdict leading to double the previous penalty. 1st offence 2 weeks. 2nd offence 4, 3rd 8, 4th 16 weeks and so on. Players like Toby Greene would learn or never play again. They can be malevolent cancers that need to grow up.

The last one with Heppell happened on Sunday.  It was in play, he took several steps toward the umpire and must have seen him yet pushed him in the chest and upper arm which were forceful enough to force him back. Went round him only after the umpire had been pushed out of Heppell's path.  Didn't try to pull up.  Didn't look back.  Didn't apologise.  Not even cited by MRO.

The AFL should go scorched earth on this, and should have long before this Greene incident. Heppell should have been cited, and let off, just to send a message. Neale should have got a week, just to send a message. There should have been no controversy over the Greene incident. Automatic 6 weeks and no media chatter because the line in the sand had already been drawn.

But the AFL have no concept of "precedent".

Should have been 4 weeks plus 25 grand! What an absolute Muppet!! PLUS a 2 match susoended sentence for any other guilty verdict on top of what he would get for ANY proven offence in next 2 years. 23 CHARGES 23 guy will NEVER learn

I hope they appeal: I agree with Mister Gill - for once: he should have been sentenced to six weeks.

A really great player but his brain fades have really damaged him as a Star and his Club at the most critical of times. I was really shocked when I saw the incident and the look on Jesse Hogans face following the incident confirmed to me the unacceptable nature of the incident. The Giants should impose further sanctions on him so that he actually gets it.!!!!

Max just picked him up to say hello.

Interesting logic.

He offended during a final, so that should be double the standard penalty, yeah?

Yes, very interesting, to quote Maxwell Smart.

Correct verdict, penalty the absolute bare minimum but IMO too light.

The AFL has a lot of work to do with its MRO/Tribunal process for 2022. Greene, like Selwood, is a brilliant example of why repeated fines do nothing to deter behaviour.

Repeated fines is like fining a serial burglar $1000 every time he burgles and takes home 100 grand for his efforts.

The double Penalty in finals is to stop the Lynch type swinging punches so I wouldn’t have thought so

Heard Grant Thomas on 3aw yesterday advocating for a fine only due to it being a "grey area" and suspensions need to be reserved for "black and white" incidents only

Totally moronic

He must've been headline chasing in a bid for relevance, as he'd been relegated to DD Dunlevey's slot (I'm usually not in the car at 12.30...)

I get the impression at least one member of the tribunal panel was trying hard to get Greene cleared. The process to find a verdict was far too long to hand out such a modest and minimal penalty given the obviousness and gravity of the offence. In the end an unholy compromise.

Gill covering himself well here. Letting the tribunal take the hit and the AFL look like they are taking a hardline against ump incidents

doubt he’ll go the appeal

He was a Collingwood player.

He might have to maintain the rage if the Umpires want to push this personal ado, perhaps even to court, and why not..

They can't tease the appeal and then not bother.

It isn't great that the AFL is going to distract from the build up to semis but this is news and clicks either way.

3 weeks is a poorly executed bump on a player - so if you are an umpire you are now just another person on the field, hated by all, blamed by nuffies for all issues, and fair effing game...

I don't want to see Greene until Rd 6 next year.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
