During that 20 minute period they didn’t have a single bounce of the ball/drop of the ball/ umpiring decision go against them. They had many umpiring decisions in that period help set up goals too. Every time the ball fell out of a pack it fell right in their hands. We were constantly wrong footed or slipping over. You get a few of them a year and they were able to capitalise on it because they’re good. They won’t do that again all finals and I doubt we will have that happen against us again this year. Even if it happened again they might kick four, but eight was nuts. I would think everyone has been on both ends of it playing sport at any level. Sometimes you get a golden run and sometimes you’re left standing there looking stupid thinking I’m not doing much wrong here.

It's happened a few times this year, as it does.

It happened against North for a large chunk of the first half, but they weren't good enough to make it stick.

It happened against Adelaide for most of the game, but we didn't do ourselves any favours by playing from behind. Some bad luck at the death but it shouldn't have been that close.

Collingwood, well, the day & the occasion were tailor-made for them. And it was one of the days where Buckley's game plan came off just right. They're not skilled enough to make it work consistently. If we ran up against them now we'd tear them to bits, but at that stage we were still learning how to be a top team. (Our education is nearly complete.)

GWS & Hawthorn, just outcoached us on the day and we fell into their traps. We also played from behind against HFC. GWS will be a dangerous finals opponent. On the other hand, we finished top and not by accident.

What a great feeling and to think it's at the end of the home & away season. Marching into finals with full wind in our sails.

GO DEMONS!!!!

Nice to watch the last quarter.

So to take my medicine I went back and watched the 2nd quarter again - here's my breakdown of Geelong's 8 goals and I think there are some key themes:

  • a lot of Geelong long bombs deep
  • May outbodied by Hawkins 3 times
  • Cameron ground ball separation on Petty twice
  • Selwood and Dangerfield clearance brilliance
  • Oliver's direct opponent at the stoppages often very influential
  • The commentary team said Oliver didn't touch it in this whole period
  • Harmes not defensive enough twice

1. 7:15 Cameron goal

Throw in outside Geelong 50
Gawn-Stanley
Oliver-Parfitt
Sparrow-Dangerfield
Harmes-Selwood

Shallow throw-in bounces short of the ruckmen, Selwood gets a handball clearance to Simpsopn who bombs long to Cameron who marks in front of Petty.

Key factor: Selwood brilliance, Harmes not close enough to him, long bomb

2. 12:18 Hawkins goal

Geelong chipping around
Long Menegola bomb from outside 50 to the goal square
Parfitt outbodies Max in the marking contest, ball goes over the back
Cameron gets separation on Petty but fresh airs the off the ground.
Hawkins outbodies May and kicks it off the ground

Key factors: Long bomb, Max outbodied, Cameron separation on Petty, Hawkins outbodies May

3. 19:59 Hawkins goal

Geelong chipping
Henry long bomb
Hawkins outbodies May from behind to mark

Key factors: Long bomb, Hawkins outbodies May

4. 23:55 Hawkins goal

Throw in outside Geelong 50
Gawn-Stanley
Oliver-Selwood
Petracca-Guthrie
Harmes-Parfitt

Selwood clearance and handball to Guthrie handball to Parfitt long bomb forward
Hawkins outbodies May from behind to mark

Key factors: Selwood brilliance vs Oliver in the clearance, long bomb, Hawkins outbodies May

5. 25:15 Dangerfield goal

Centre bounce
Gawn-Stanley
Oliver-Selwood
Harmes-Dangerfield
Petracca-Parfitt

Stanley gets first possession
Holding free to Selwood vs Oliver
Selwood chip to Dangerfield
Dangerfield runs and bombs from ouside 50 goal

Key factors: Selwood beats Oliver, Dangerfield brilliance, long bomb

6. 26:15 Close goal

Centre bounce
Gawn-Stanley
Oliver-Dangerfield
Harmes-Holmes
Petracca-Parfitt

Selwood hits the contest from the defensive side at speed and the ball spills forward
Dangerfield with separation on Oliver runs onto it, Selwood shepherd on Harmes
Dangerfield handball to Parfitt
Parfitt handball to Close inside 50
Close's opponent Rivers ran at Dangerfield
Close goals

Key factors: Selwood impact, Dangerfield separation on Oliver and brilliance

7. 28:12 Rohan goal

Centre bounce
Gawn-Stanley
Oliver-Dangerfield
Harmes-Selwood
Viney-Holmes

Oliver runs the contest from the defensive side but the ball goes over his head
Dangerfield gathers but is well tackled by Viney
Dangerfield gets a backwards handball to Selwood who has separation on Harmes
Selwood handball to Viney's man Holmes
Holmes long bomb inside 50
Rohan has separation on Lever and marks and goals

Key factors: Dangerfield beat Oliver, Selwood beats Harmes, long bomb

Note at the next centre bounce Max took it out of the air and handballed long forward jus to break the chain of Geelong dominance

8. 33:53 Cameron goal

Geelong chipping
To Simpson who bombs to the square inside 50
Gawn and Lever spoil Rohan but don't get it across the line
Cameron has separation on Petty and crumbs on the goal line for a goal

West Coast came back from 54 points down in the third quarter to win by 3 points at Kardinia Park in R10 2006.

Sydney came back from 45 down at quarter time in 1976 to win.

Given what was on the line and how little time we had to come back, I would say our win was more impressive than both of those.

I thought the 50 m penalty was rough but kinda made up for the two shocking insufficient intents on May and Gus.

Surely not rough considering the TIME and situation of the game!

Umps have been lacking penalising the new mark rule and players holding the ball up and not giving it back quickly enough.

I sobered if there was a report ( comment) on Jakes face whack of Selwood (I think it was) Not strong enough for fine but was his face after all. As an old science teacher if mine would have said "A love pat".

IIRC correctly Danger blatently threw one in the centre square that resulted in another one of their goals in the 2nd Q. So delighted we beat those smug [censored]

I'm still shocked that by now there haven't been more negative/pessimistic posters arguing Geelong put the cue in the rack at the 44 point lead mark and didn't care about the win.

We're legit @titan_uranus, and we all know it...but don't quuuuuuuite know what to do with it - so we internalise it.

Love it mate.

Interesting that despite the rest of Oliver's match, he seems to have really struggled and cost us in this period. Maybe a little bit of immaturity and loss of focus on his part?

Also interesting to note the long bombing, so as to isolate 1v1s and prevent interceptions, and that even when the ball was kicked to 2 or 3 forwards in a closer proximity, each forward blocked or held their opponent off for the other to impact.

It's also clear we made some simple defensive errors. It shows how this can cost you against good opposition.

Did anyone else notice, Oliver, who busted his gut and almost single handidly dragged us over the line raised up and jumped the highest into our outburst of celebrations. Right over everyone.

I don't think the league knows what it has coming this finals.

Ahhh, you're riffing on those that drop off when we succeed... sure sure.

It's all about weight of evidence. we've been in EVERY SINGLE GAME (aside from Collingwood, which felt surprising, perhaps GWS) - > no other team plays like us or has the consistency of us. There is enough evidence to say, yep we are the real deal, and probably will be in the finals for the next 4-5 years barring injury other another version of an Act of God.

I see my subtle attempt at getting people to call it Tom’s Crack didn’t catch on.

The whole lot of them were absolutely red lining.
None more so than Oliver.
His will to win is off the charts.

And David King is a [censored] [censored]

There was a segment half way through the year about the gap between the top 8 and bottom 10. The 8 were easily winning the count, yeah no [censored]. But to make it worse he then says “whereas the top 8 teams playing each other are 5 and 5” LOL. Not smart enough to realise there has to be a winner and a loser. Must’ve come up with that stat himself instead of being fed it as per usual.

We burnt him, was all over us after Roos and Goodwin then got us humming. Then we turned to [censored] and he took it personally that we made his prediction look bad.

Seasons when team is bad, Demonland is negative.

Seasons when team is good, Demonland is positive.

Not sure if mentioned, but Hamish McLachlan’s call at the end of the game was brilliant.

Except the little bit when Selwood kicked it directly to the boundary line with 48 seconds to go

And when Hawkins pinned Clarry's arms and drove him into the turf

And when Hawkins pushed out May to mark the ball 3 times.

Funnily enough he didn't point any of those out...

How do you get the replay on the AFL site? I can't see where it is, can you help?

That is literally the first positive comment I’ve ever read about Hamish McLachlan.

Have to admit he’s growing on me as a commentator.

Hey SWYL, stop pinching my material! I posted this link about 10 hours ago!!

On the subject of Viney, yes he played well, and yes he kicked a nice goal. But he missed a sitter at the start of the match ... set shot from 20 metres out. He is definitely best 22.

Not convinced about Harmes. He ducked his head and dropped a marked I50 in the last qtr. Not a good look.

Sparrow was OK. He'll keep his place.

I wonder what the medical sub (Jordon) thought after the match. He didn't get a run. Mixed feelings during celebrations?

On the site there is a status bar along the bottom. Choose "video"

I just saw on the news May saying what he said to Max just before he lined up to take the shot. He said, “we’ve got your back. No matter what happens, we love you.” 💕

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
