One issue: surely the original intent of the holding-the-man and push-in-the back rules are to prevent interference off the ball when the opponent is still in the contest, rather than to penalise players who tackle someone who drops the ball in the tackle or otherwise drops their knees and gets ridden into the ground?

This.

You might be joking but we havent played like that for quite a few weeks.

If we could only fix our goal kicking

i was half joking jnr

First time this year my faith was starting to waver. Last 3 games uninspiring.

We were back to our suffocating best though last night. Pressure gauge turned right back up again. Hence i'm back on the bandwagon

Anyone who can’t see what Brown did for us tonight is not watching hard enough. He drew defenders in a contest, he brought ball to ground. He gave Tmac Fritta and Jacko opportunities to play one on one and on the lead.
Opposition defenders worry about Brown. He’s a big unit. You don’t just forget he’s there. He command respect and a good solid opponent. It’s little wonder Tmac had one of his best games of the year tonight. He finally wasn’t being breathed on by 6 defenders!

Our midfield was absolutely outstanding tonight. Gawn back to his best.

Tonight proved to me that when we are switched on, and when we can bring our signature pressure, we can beat anyone.

Edit: if anything ever happens to Steven May we are royally [censored].

So why wasnt he played last week???  If is so obvious!

Loved seeing Petracca Giving it to the port cheer squad after his goals. Had a good laugh ?

Great response last night after a rough patch of form

Our stars shone but nearly every player contributed

Petty’s best game in the red and blue. Hunt having a great season and far exceeding my expectations.

JJ is a revelation. So consistent. The heir to James McDonald?

BB looked fit and mobile. His presence made a huge difference and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that TMac was back to his best last night with BB in the team beside him

Harmes is a worry. ANB fumbly but ran himself into the ground. Dogga quiet but clunked an excellent mark and slotted our first goal. He’ll be some weapon in years to come

Shout out to goody and the coaching team. We’ve had a tough run but back to our best last night. We were switched on from the get-go

All in all a very satisfactory nights work

Go Dees

Goodwin, Williams, Kosi, Lever, Petty and Neal-Bullen all hail from South Australia.

These players were going ‘home’.

I expected a win. Lovely to see Kosi turn it on.

Sydney threw Aliir around cause (I think) he has fairly questionable decision making & disposal. But he didn't do anything wrong that I could remember tonight, so no idea why he was moved.

Hinkley was trying to do something different. Good on him.

Unfortunately when it doesn't come off ppl say "what the f"?

Had it worked out would have been a masterstroke

Hinkley- “We had control of their tall forwards. They didn’t hurt us”.  Must have watched a different game. Tommy McDonald was one of our best.

Hinkley is one of the worst tactical coaches in the AFL.

Best win for the year.
that was a severely hostile crowd early

Would love to fill the G With Demons like that during home and away games

It might just happen if we are every allowed to fill the place and I have my second jab SWYL.

We're never going to beat any of the top teams kicking 4 goals 10 in the second half of a game.

(Just in case dr d and osilik can't bring himself to post after a win like that)

Except we just did

Jaded, I think you're right about May and his importance.

We also went a bit quiet for five or ten minutes in the third as Carrie and Tracc lost a bit of their influence.

I think we would be just as screwed if either of those two were out as well.

I just couldn't see the likes of Viney, Harmes or Sparrow being able to do what those two do for us out of the middle and out of the packs.

It was a great team effort but May, Tracca and Clarrie are essential for us if we are to grab some silverware.

He has a very good list at his disposal and a solid home ground advantage. He has never been able to make use of either. They are downhill skiers and he often gets out coached.
Last year they had a dream run at the AO due to Covid and they still couldn’t get themselves into the grand final.

Port fans really don’t like him and don’t know why he’s been around so long without producing. Their list is absolutely good enough to win a flag.
Port game he talked injuries. He loves excuses.

Best thing about winning on a Thursday night?

We get the whole weekend to relax now and bag [censored] teams for being extra [censored].

Ps how is Sh it censored??

And you can walk around all weekend wearing your Dees cap.

Dropped 209 spots in the nationwide tipping last night………felt good. How did the ruminations end up?

You should add Tmac to your list.

The pressure and the system returned last night. Great game by our lads.

BBB was very good in allowing others to do their thing, particularly TMAC and Kossie.

Really noticed how BBB was spiking the ball at our smalls when providing a contest. He didn't look to out mark in a massive pack.

Nice deft tap by Dogga in the middle too to send us forward.

The best part of wins like that is we don't hear from @Dr.D for a little while, who has once again got it completely wrong

We don't lose to the comps best teams, its that simple.

9 tackles for a small forward is outrageous.  Kossie is back.

Nothing to do with the Dees but i notice that over paid overrated rat bag at the pies is in the news again today. How lucky was North not to get him.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
