We’re 12 wins, 2 losses - one loss of which we essentially won but for woeful umpiring (Crows), and the other of which we should’ve won but for woeful defending (Pies).

We’re currently 8 points clear of second place, mid-way the season.

Other than Tomlinson, we have no major injury concerns.

The team looks harmonious and united, on and off field, and most, if not all, of our key players have committed to the club through mid to long term deals.

It seems likely that we’ll finish in the top 4 and, unlike last year, the prelim and grand finals will be held at the MCG (our home ground).

In short, I’ve not seen a Demons team in over 20 years of supporting them better placed than we are now.

That said, I feel nervous. Almost uneasy.

I’ve read reports that Choco Williams might be Collingwood’s senior coach next year, that Yze is in the mix to replace Teague at Carlton. Burgess will be at the Crows next year. Jackson is homesick and will eventually move back to the Weagles. I fear that May or Lever will get injured in round 20.

While I’m probably boxing at shadows here (because we’re in an enviable and unusual position), I just can’t relax. It all feels like a house of cards is about to come crashing down.

I can’t work out whether it’s paranoia borne out of years of following a team prone to failure, or whether my concerns are real.

I’ve also got 500 bucks on us to win the flag at 17/1 (the entire proceeds of which go to my wife, to ensure she watches each game - with some level of enthusiasm).

Anyway,  it all feels a bit unreal - too good to be true territory. Anyway else feel this way?

I’d also like someone with inside knowledge to confirm that I’m completely wrong in relation to the Choco Williams, Yze and Burgess concerns.

Cheers, Ron.

We either win the flag from here or  things go horribly wrong and we finish 6th and bomb out week one of finals. There is no in between for Melbourne. It’s all or nothing.
My greatest fear is we don’t get to play finals at the G due to Covid.

Top of the table, no injuries, no contract concerns, game plan stands up, everyone has bought in. And we haven't hit top gear yet. There's improvement to come.

The one team i was really worried about have run aground. There'll be no norm smith for dusty this year. We should not fear any other team in this league.

Just need to sharpen our goal kicking (BB finding form would be huge) and fingers crossed we have luck with injuries.

We're in great shape for a proper crack at the flag.

I think Mr Burgundy has summed things up excellently.

I had $100 at 23/1 with Sportsbet, and they have already paid out.

At what odds did they pay out, Tony?  Surely not the 23/1 you started with?

There is nothing more certain than this outcome except that the whole season will get canned.

when finally the  Bulldog make up that one game, in Round 17  and they then have a superior %....

I clearly learned Catholics maths at school.

Did that involve lots of multiplying?

Don’t worry,  Brian Taylor has already written us off. Three days ago it was still Richmond. Today its the Bulldogs..

I wouldn't take them for granted but they're too old i reckon. they'll be found out in the heat of September

This year I fear poor kicking for goal more than anything.
The only bloke I'm reasonably confident with a set shot is TMac.
Most of the other blokes I don't know where the fork it's gonna go and am just relieved when they do go through.
And if we get done in a final kicking 5goals 17pts  I'll ..... SPEW UP !

I don't think Mark Wiiliams will get the Collingwood gig: he has said on numerous occasions that he doesn't want a senior gig - that Collingwood position carries a lot more than just running a football team. Yze will likely be snapped up at some point, but hopefully not for a while yet.

Yep. Paid out in full. $2,300 straight into my sky rocket.

I’ve always thought the year we win the flag to break the ‘64 drought will be unexpected - like the Dogs in ‘16 where a magical run of 4 weeks won it for them.

I have doubts we’ll win it this year. I think a prelim or a GF loss is likely. However, I think the year after or the year after that, we will time our form and be finals battled hardened to see us sweep the competition at the business end and knock off a Geelong or Bulldogs in the grand final.

Geez, well done mate!

There must have surely been some sort of publicity angle as we're not certainties to win the flag at this stage.

(BTW, if they paid out $2,300, the odds were 22 to 1 as $100 of that was your original stake)

But if* he did receive $2,300, that means the odds were, in fact, 23 to one. What he won would be $2,200 coz that’s minus his $100 stake.

*I say ‘if’ because  I’m not convinced this actually happened. Methinks someone might just be taking the pi$$ (?)

I wouldn't want to win a "premiership" by being the top team when the season gets cancelled. That would actually be worse than being top when the season is canned and not being able to play finals.

It did. He’s not.

They paid out weeks ago. After the Richmond win IIRC

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
