Median age and games is a better indication I think. Not sure how to get that until AFL Tables publishes for the round though.

In round 11, Brisbane were 25 years / 93 games, and Melbourne were 25 years / 103 games. Our only change were both on the low side of the median so ours would be the same.

Both teams look of comparable experience on paper to me.

We had 8 players with less than 50 games vs 5 for them.

Surprised no one has mentioned Michael Hibberd's game on Charlie Cameron. I know he kicked 2 goals but he was completely shut out of the game and never looked like he he was going to threaten.

But lets not sugar coat the fact that for 2 years he was absolutely terrible - even by his own admission.

Yeah, but it's not like Daniher was outstanding throughout that period either and I'd argue that some of the fundamentals with T Mac like his goal kicking have always been better.

Was there a MFC player in 2019 that wasn't terrible?

I also don't think T Mac was all that bad last season.  He was almost at a point where he was finding his form back again and then he got his eye poked out in that game and that was his season  gone after falling out of fashion/favour with the selectors.

Yeah, but the way the talk was at the time, I suspect the MFC was prepared to pay a reasonable portion of T Mac's wage.  Daniher cost the Lions $2.5M over 3 years = $830K per season.

I have never thought Daniher was the superstar they made him out to be. If he could fix his kicking perhaps.....

And quite a few lazy spots in his gamne against us. Didn't run and chase ...

Sorry, I thought there were a few howlers of decisions both ways.  I'll take the goal, but that fee kick paid down feild to Fritta in the first quarter was absolute rubbish.

I also thought that free kick paid against Salem holding the ball, which gifted Coleman a goal was equally rubbish, because the tackle slipped below the waist pretty early and Salem was practically tripped.

Then there was that non free where Daniher was tackled to the ground, but then allowed to kick it free whole on the ground without it being paid holding the ball was ridiculous.

Agree.  One of Cameron's goals came from a holding the man free, which I'm not sure Hibbo was responsible for.

And then there is the aspect of Hibbo's damaging pin point passes to players in good positions comming out of defense (in that second half in particular), which I though really helped us rebound with gusto.

Funnily enough not one of those other sides won the flag.

But, we also know that strong defence is usually a hallmark of premiership winners.

The way to reconcile the two is to note that points against is only one measurement of a good defence. Others, in which I believe we also rate highly, include scores from inside 50s conceded, intercept marks/possessions, and defensive 50 pressure.

Here's some context:

I think Brisbane have 23 players because they activated their medical sub. Mathieson's played 53 games so comparing the 22 who played almost the entire game, we had 11 under 100 games and they had 10, we had 11 over 100 games and they had 12.

Relatively even, although in both instances our groups are less experienced than theirs, particularly the sub-50 game crop.

I do love his work when he gets on the ball.  His pickups off the ground and 360 awareness with his handball are absolute assets.  Being able to throw in another player at the centre bounces who is quite different to Gawn in his hit out approach is probably also something which helps add a bit of unpredictability for opposition on-ballers to have to react to.

But I still think it's pretty hard to beat Max's contributions in the ruck and marking prowess dropping back behind the ball.  Some of the centre square clearances won between Max and Clarry in particular (with some good contributions from Trac) in the thrid and fourth quarters were awsome and a big factor for us getting back into the game and then our dominance of the Lions in that second half.

Fooled them alright. That was a blatant block but the AFL loves scoring so I’m sure the umps are told to ignore those.

Depends what a reasonable portion means I guess.

Collingwood are paying $300k of Treloar’s this year and that’s about the most extreme example you’ll ever see. I doubt we felt under pressure enough to pay anything like that so anybody taking Tommy wouldn’t be saving that much.

I guarantee if he was out of contract and someone could have got away with paying him $400-500k he’d be gone. 

For what it’s worth aren’t we all glad he isn’t!

Thanks @Rodney (Balls) Grinter  Have been dealing with a family issue and had to head out of  town so only just saw this.  
Here’s an update on my night. I had previously mentioned that Mrs IT finally joined me for an MFC game. First time 28 years. Plus our kids came too. Half way through  the first quarter she’s not looking anymore and says I didn’t come out here to see them play badly. Half wat through the second she said she was going to leave. I politely told her that won’t be happening. I said they’ll come back and have a famous win. By the end she was screaming louder than anyone else, embarrassing our daughter no end. On Saturday morning I listened to her singing the song to herself in the shower. She remembered about 3 words and tra lala’ed the rest. Had a big laugh to myself. She’s coming to QB now. 
Go Dees. One of the great wins. I still can’t believe we got to see it live.

lf they want to "fix" football, and bring back the old contested style like they all claim they do, then this is the main thing they need to fix.

It's illegal to block, screen, body contact etc. in any way that prevents someone trying to contest a mark.

Physical contact is fine as long as in l it is part of you actively trying to contest the mark yourself.

So just go hard on this rule. Pay all of them. We'll have packs of players all trying to get hands on the football again, crumbers swarming.

We'll have more one on ones because they can't afford to block in case they give the free kick away and because you can't afford to leave your player to 3rd man up if you don't have a block being laid so you have the over the top sit.

It's a really easy fix.

Likewise, the block on Salem for Cameron's first goal. FIRST CRACK praised it tonight, but Robertson wasn't even looking at the ball and blocked Salem off it. That should be a free kick to Salem.
