That was the prototype James Harmes negating game. He stops his opponent getting it at the source and then joins in on offence with gut run. It's not strictly a hard tag, but I'd argue it's still a tag. 

I reckon he's one of the best in the business at tagging and then kicking goals on his opponent.

His return to form is a very exciting prospect with Viney still to come back.

Sam W was not great but full credit for those two important  goals whrn it would have bern difficult to keep himself motivated. Kept his place with those I think. And Fritta pulled himself out of his slump.

So impressed we have fixed our slow starts.

 

Spargo's foot passing was often elite, hitting targets well and creating plays. His improvements have been considerable.

Harmes' game was terrific - he screened well again, using his body well in contacts, marking contests and on-ground pick-ups.

Sam - handy two goals but well short of convinced about his contributions ... one handball for an entire half of footy ...

Fritta - great performance and do you recall that he missed 3 shots that normally, he would have sunk. It would have made the winning margin quite embarassing for the Doggies, plus two just missed by Kozzie ...

All good, though. A great performance re-directing our game skills and readiness for the finals.

 

Bevo on Melbourne 

• Even though we had 7 or 8 more inside 50’s they were by far the better team
• Melbourne constantly put themselves in good positions
• We were expecting at some point to get a run on, we have been able to out-work sides but, credit to Melbourne, tonight they had most of the bases covered
• It was only a 28 point loss but it felt more than that.
• One of the challenges playing Melbourne as we transition forward we couldn’t win enough of the contests forward. They out numbered us too well

The one thing I hate about Friday night Saturday Night games. I live in Country Victoria and there is nothing in the papers. 

Not to be too negative but I reckon we’re still making far too many silly mistakes.

Gawn played on inadvertently twice due to stepping off the mark at half forward. Both led to easy turnovers. He filled Petracca’s quota this week. The umps are red hot on it and players have to learn.

And we need to nail the unselfish forward play. No more Tom McDonald stiff arms. No more Max Gawn snaps in traffic. Feed the ball back to our mids and reset the attack.

And every slow long down the line kick that doesn’t reach a tall target should be treated with disgust. May went long to ANB with 2 minutes left in the first half when Gawn was on the boundary. Several other times kicks fell away from Tom, Weid and Jacko. It’s a core part of our game plan and we can’t get it wrong, especially if we’re playing such a tall forward line.

Our forwards also have to be aware of the deliberate rule and know their job is to help the backs. Melksham sat and watched a ball roll out that he could’ve touched. Get over and get it.

Petracca, Oliver and others turned the ball over in the corridor in the last quarter far too many times. It wasn’t helping the plan to just kill the clock. If we can ice games we can rest our best players so they don’t miss weeks.

And JJ, love your effort, but you aren’t kicking centre square goals from 60 brother. The clearance was beautiful, back yourself to find a hit up. Or go 15 out so it isn’t rushed.

The guys were great last night, but there’s still a lot of sloppy stuff that can be fixed pretty easily. Small things that can make a big difference if we get them right.

You don’t fly for marks like that when you don’t have confidence in yourself or your teammates covering for you (at least not in the defensive 50).

Good to see Petty getting some continuity in his game and starting to gel with the back-line.

See bolded quote - you cover the bases and prevent momentum bursts and you win finals.

It's going to be great for the boys to review all of those moments in detail when we stopped their run. Then replicate!

We do this though. The other team usually comes at us in second halves. The modern game is about ebbs and flows of momentum and we have this incredible ability to take the game down into a scrap and an end to end scoreless battle. By this stage, we have the lead, so it's about maintaining it and where possible, hitting them going the other way.

This doesn't bother me at all. And we have more gears to go to.

He looked underdone against the Swans. And in the VFL the week before too for those who saw it. 

I reckon the job on Walsh was excellent and sharpened him right up and last night was about the peak of that. Maximum votes in the best and fairest for that game.

We have reach the half way mark of the current season and for the first time in a long time the football club has not played any of the 3 recruits Bowey Laurie and Rosman who will benefit from getting a grounding in the VFL.

The 15/11 scoring shots in first half is balanced out with 7/8 after half time.

Not really an issue at this stage

agree with all of your points. There's a lot to work on. Fritsch needs to work on his drop punt goal kicking too. He can't snap everything.

Yep, as Richo said during the game, we get such tremendous pressure on the ball carrier post clearance that even when we lose clearance, we almost immediately get the game on our terms or at least neutralise it.

The dogs are dangerous if their mids get on top and can cut teams up, but if they only halve clearances they are struggling against most decent teams.  They have a lot of selfish players running forward of the ball who look a million dollars when it comes off, but with pressure and turnovers leave a mediocre defence totally exposed (hence our highest score from turnovers this year).  

Bailey Smith is an overrated player imo. His was the least effectual 27 disposal game you will see, along with Macrae’s ineffectual high disposal effort. Bonts 30 possessions was ok but he got exposed several times and cost them goals. Treloar would not have impacted last night as he is another forward runner.

Full credit to the coaches for the plan we had to stop Libba, cover the easy front runners to ensure they were not dangerous (Jordan to Smith), and then back Clarry and Trac to beat Bont and Macrae which they did. 

The Dogs are up against the Dockers away, Cats away, Eagles away over the next 3 weeks and have us again, Port, and Sydney in the mix.  Will be interesting to see how they respond, or whether the other clubs go to town on how we stopped them.

They would transition to the other side only to be stuck and hesitant again.

Our blokes are super fit and must be covering a lot of ground to keep blocking teams like that.

You just dont get the perspective on tv.

Secretly, I have been hoping one of Demonlands own, would take some photo's or video's when they are perched high in the stands and upload them as a public service to us all.

My name is binman.

And I am a dees media content addict.

But that is not the problem.

The problem is I can't get enough dees media content.

A great thing about playing Friday night games is allmosy post game media up till about 1pm sat is about that game.

From last nights game  if you have kayo i'd recommend first crack. The first half of last night's episode was all about the dees. Great stuff. Love the video to explain stuff. And I have to I really like montages analysis. Doesdy hurt he has been pumping up the dees and our game plan for weeks.

On radio  I don't like sen as a rule. And never listened to it all ladt year. But crunch time 12-1 or so on sat is good,. Del Santo and maher leve me cold. And I'm ambivalent about wheatley, but he knows his stuff and is well prepared. But the ace in the pack  leppa, who is just  fantastic. Smart, explains things well and discusses systems and tactics in a way that is easy to get.
