Couldn't see this anywhere else on Demonland and think it's worth a thread. Sam Edmund from SEN reported yesterday that the start time for Friday night games may change from 7.50 pm Melbourne time to 7.20 pm. However, I haven't seen any follow up news, so not sure whether it's true or not. I would support such a change.

Here's the story: https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/05/25/friday-night-football-set-for-time-change-in-huge-win-for-fans/

Thats good.  Now that I think about it, 7 50 pm was way too late to start.  Must have had something to do with $$$$

The late finish times are a major deterrent for most people attending or watching games, particularly with children. The earlier the better as far as I'm concerned, and that goes for Sunday afternoon games as well.

Forget the children. As I get older it's getting too late for me too. Even watching on TV.

remember when games used to start at 7.10pm but channel 7 wouldn't start showing them til about 8.50pm?

But Bourke's Backyard was a must watch for all of Australia...

Not only did they not start the program until 8:30 but as you say they would then go through all the pre game (which was really about advertising) before showing the game at 8:50

LOL my god I had forgotten about that rubbish, Bourke's back yard ffs.

Any idea when the 7:20pm starts commence?

Not that we ever play Friday night games, but I actually prefer the 7:50 later starts. Plenty of time for dinner and a couple of frothies after work and you're not rushed.

channel 9 had the footy for a few years (2001-2006)

shared them with ch 10 and Foxtel

What do you expect when Channel 7 decisions on AFL football are made by "boffins" in SYDNEY.  They have no real understanding of best times to start/finish as it's all about advertising dollars which now control the broadcasting times of our game. Gil is over a barrel, bum exposed and too weak to stand up to them.

The second issue with Channel 7 is their support of just plain ordinary commentators. They could start a cull with Brian Taylor, Brayshaw and that waste of space Luke Darcy. JOBS FOR THE BOYS must be cleaned up. Fortunately I have Foxtel with different commentators (Eddie has to stop screaming) but with Melbourne playing so well we have FTA commentary coming thru Foxtel often now. Grrrrrrrr

why 7:20? why not 7:00 or 7:30 which better aligns with tv programming times

i'd prefer 7:00 personally but even 7:30 would be better than 7:50 (talking game start, not pregame stuff)

cos at 7.20pm it means that they can begin broadcast at 7pm with two ad breaks before the bounce at 7.20pm

Well on television the pre-game coverage starts around 7 anyway, so if we move the actual game to 7.10 but keep the same timeslot we have successfully eliminated about half an hour of the 'I think I'm a comedian slash bogan wedding MC from the 80s' show.

Back then people used to say that they put on a delayed telecast so as to run two ads after every goal instead of one. ?

I liked when channel 10 did Saturday nights coz I liked “Before The Game,” the show that was on, well, before the game. But I didn’t like that they ran the clock up. I prefer the clock running down so as you know when the siren is gonna sound.

thanks for explanation.....quite obvious really

for me personally i hate the pregame game stuff anyway so always bypass it. I'm often watching something else on another channel that finishes at 7:30, hence my preference for game start at 7:30

AFL 360 had the starting time for the Dogs v Dees Friday night at 7PM EST.

That's when their coverage starts. Game time still listed as 7:50pm

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
