Hoping that Victoria can re-open so all of you guys can see the Grand final live. Vic sure has been hit hard by this thing.

Otherwise a Brisbane granny. I would walk down if that's what it took to see the Dees win a flag.

When you live down here (in Vic.) esp. after the last 2 Deta outbreaks, managed effectively for the first time in the world, you actually appreciate Dan Andrews and hisĀ team. His decisionfor 8.00pm shutdown yetsreday was first class.

The rest of your post areĀ meaningless platitudes which are of no interest.

I'm a bit worried about your risk assessment thought processes. You willingly stand outside the Casey ground to watch training (for which we are grateful) even though you know there are snakes in the vicinity.

The number of deathsĀ in Australia from blood clots caused by AZ is 7 out of 7 million doses given, obviously the classic "one in a million". The number of fatalities in NSW from Covid is 76 out of 8.2 million people.Ā That's more than 9 in a million. Are you sure it's worth taking that risk of remaining unvaccinated when an alternative is available?Ā (I appreciate every person's circumstances and individual health profile can vary.)

Oh, and in Australia there is an average of two fatal snake bites per annum. Just something for you to think about.

The data on ITP from AZ is 1/100k to 1/200k it seems

Thanks. If I'm reading it correctly, the data on blood clots showing a rate of 1 case per every 100,000 to 200,000 of doses is total of all cases, including fatal and non-fatal. Is that right?

And as you point out, getting in your car to escape to the country to avoid lockdown is far riskier than getting AZ and staying put.

Fatality rate from TTS is falling as doctors etc. become more aware of it and better able to treat it. Rates are approaching 10% from what I've seen: i.e. fatal in 1 in 10 people who get TTS post AZ vaccination. People with more time on their hands than me can compare that to the risk of death from lightning strikes, car accidents or daily aspirin use.

Tragic of course, but Covid takes no prisoners.

well covid does take prisoners. not everyone who gets covid dies.Ā  some do,Ā  some get long term effects and some are asymptomatic.......just like people who get az and may get tts

I welcome a variety of views and on this thread where people with different views have regularly commented.Ā  It's my option to read and to judge and I like the opportunity to do so.

I support the latest lockdown in Melbourne and I like the fact it was done immediately, previous experience supports acting as quickly as possible. Full marks to the Andrews Government.

But I question why all of country Victoria is in lockdown, that is something worthy of debate and I can see why country Victoria might be of the view that Andrews has shut them down not Covid.

We should consider ourselves lucky being in a well developed country.Ā  Although i also get the damage being done to small business and sole traders with each lockdown.Ā  Heart breaking for many who are losing their livelihoods.

The recent pic here is pretty confronting.Ā  Mods feel free to remove if you feel the need.received_343472680748677.jpeg.b1a063631488879639bd8382ed5cc347.jpeg

This is a hospital hallway in Columbo Sri Lanka being used as some sort of ward with all beds having beenĀ  over run, i have beenĀ told their equivalent to say Box Hill Hospital here.

Apparently they have no oxygen, intravenous or any other assistance.Ā  As for intubaters ...well.Ā Ā

The other picĀ i have is not postworthy hereĀ and shows bodies piled side by side in an ante room as there just isn't enough space in the mortuary area and too many to be picked up by the funeral parlours etc.

Very tough times in many places i'm sure and already have been in the likes of India, Bangladesh etc but Sri Lanka is copping it big time at the moment unfortunately.

Puts our worrying about where finals might be played into a bit of perspective.

Tragic of course, but Covid takes no prisoners.

Keep in mindĀ deaths per Vax using AZĀ rate only takes into account those deaths confirmed as AZ related via official autopsy results.

While we have no way of knowing, certain family members / religions / races may not give consent to autopsy following death.

according to covid worldometer....

australia has approx 36,000 covid cases recorded for 36 deaths, so that is a death rate of neatly 1 per 1,000 cases

of course there could be more cases due to untested asympyomatic people but this would be small as most would be picked up for testing via contact tracing

It also stands the reason that more cases equals more deaths. Hospitals get overwhelmed and people donā€™t get adequate care. We saw that happen over and over again overseas andĀ that is the greatest fear of our country I think. We donā€™t want to overwhelm our medical system. Itā€™s also why I think we lock down regional Victoria. They donā€™t have the hospital capacity to deal with hundreds or even tens of cases needing ICU or ventilation.Ā

I am referring to the incidents of critical cases or death from TTS following AZ shots in OzĀ DC

Itā€™s not your POV that grates, itā€™s the sincere impish thrill you seem to show when you give it. It borders on ā€˜trollingā€™ which I donā€™t want to call Land regulars, and you are a smart member of our community. I think Israel is the best case study for Pfizer. Itā€™s struggling against Delta and now they are doing booster shots for over 60s. It looks like Pfizer wears off quicker than AZ. Both are still quite effective in stopping you from getting very sick and dying and that is the main point. We need vaccines so people donā€™t die or get hospitalized with Covid. People can get mild symptoms and we all move on with our lives because it becomes another type of cold and flu. Itā€™s the fact that so many people get so ill thatā€™s the issue.Ā
The only benefit of being so far behind our vaccination program here is we are learning what works and what doesnā€™t from everyone else.Ā There are now studies into mixed vaccinations and booster shots. Ā Iā€™m sure once we all get two jabs we will need to get a third one next year. Maybe of the same vaccine weā€™ve already had or maybe of something totally different or new.Ā
Novanex studies seem really promising on Delta but they are small studies still.Ā

Latest FDA /CDC advice (rightly or wrongly) says no need for booster shots post 2 vaccine shots at this point in time.

Where are you getting the Pfizer wearing off quicker than AZ evidence from and Pfizer struggling against Delta?Ā  There is prelim evidence that Delta is a fitter virus and efficacy is lower against this variant but my understanding is this is the case with all vaccines to this point (to various degrees of course and the outcomes vary with each study).

My understanding is there is no peer reviewed hard evidence to suggest this albeit some prelim studies are indicating Moderna might be holding a higher efficacy but still very early days and too early to say with any certainty.

It is worth noting that Pfizer is putting together an updated vaccine specific to Delta with trialsĀ commencing sometime this month.

There is also prelim evidence (not peer reviewed etc) suggesting that two doses of AZ followed by an mRNA booster is producing some amazing efficacy results, even against the delta variant.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the Ā Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measlyĀ 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?Ā  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where theyā€™ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sundayā€™s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullartonā€™s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Caseyā€™s three matches and, with Melbourneā€™s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next weekā€™s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forwardā€™s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasnā€™t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamā€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneā€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season.Ā There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight.Ā Since that game, the Demonsā€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ā€˜G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sundayā€™s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
