    WA has done a great job selling out dream time. 

    WA doesn't have a public holiday on June 14th is the issue though. Plus additional travel for players.

    cannot give Adelaide QBW now - Sydney or Gabba unless MCG can be 50% or similar (I’m betting that could happen)


    So, two of today’s three new cases turned out to be false positives. I’m confident the lockdown will be lifted earlier than planned. But sadly it’ll be too late to keep the QB match in Melb.

    Were they touted as 2 of the stranger-to-stranger positive tests that had the authorities baffled?

    So are we now down to all the positive tests being linked?  All in isolation now?

    I suppose we can see it as some sort of good news but these false positives and others testing positive later than predicted does make things quite confusing

    I reckon they'll take the safe route and we'll continue in lockdown through to midnight next Thursday.  If we hit zero in the meantime well & good

    As for the financial hit (NT game & QB clash) the AFL will hopefully come to the party and help out with favourable fixturing down the track ... Pert needs to try his best to at least even the score

    But if we keep winning like we've been doing next year could be a bumper year in terms of revenue anyway

    As for now,  beat the Lions tomorrow night and we'll keep getting FTA exposure for all concerned (that includes existing sponsors & future sponsor opportunities)

    Yes. All linked. I think we may have actually stymied this outbreak. Meanwhile, people are coming out in droves to get vaccinated so this short-term scare won’t have been in vain. 


    I would really hope that in light of these two false positives that the AFL pauses for a moment. I would hate to miss out on this game being at the G. I’m sure both clubs would be happy to push it out a week (we both play in Victoria the following week) and play it even with 50% capacity. 
    I understand we need to give people time to buy tickets and also sort out the ground arrangements, but I would hate for the AFL to make this decision tomorrow and next Thursday we are told 50% capacity at footy is allowed (outdoors, with masks, need to register for your tickets etc... and it’s been proven that even with positive cases nobody transmitted the virus at the footy).

    It's way worse though if they hold off until Thursday, it gets worse or at least not better enough, and they're stuck.

    They have to make a call sooner rather than later and the Vic government can't make a call that soon.

    I’m actually on board with the idea of shifting our bye to next week and making the Pies game the week later. That gives the AFL a chance to reassess and potentially have the game at the G with crowds reduced. 

    It also means that a decision doesn’t need to be immediately made.

    Not if they push our game to the following Saturday night. MCG is free. Only other game is GWS vs Carlton (who gives a crap?) and both teams play the following Saturday in Victoria so a decent break.

    I was surprised by the 7 day lockdown extension. I thought it would be until Sunday night with an announcement on Saturday.

    If today and tomorrows figures are low we might see some easing.

    For the QB game I would take the bye and then play the game the following week. Jaded's suggestion of Saturday night sounds sensible

    If we played the Saturday night I don't think we would get to the 50% crowd (50k)...

    Yeah I've been campaigning for the QBDAY game to be pushed back to Saturday night 19 June. The MCG is free that day/night and the AFL and MFC should hold off from making a call until next week to see if the VIC government will allow crowds for 19 June.

    Even 35-40% capacity with masks required should see the club make a few $$

    I just don't get the attraction or even the point of sending this game to Adelaide in front of 10-15,000 fans and making our lads travel yet again. This game in no way has the cache of the Dream time game (Optus is sold out) and Collingwood are far from a headline act at the moment. Therefore they're dreaming if a big crowd will come along.

    So how many cases have actually come out of the AFL community in the past year and a half. Real over the top stuff Just keep the players in a bubble and let them travel wherever  Apply crowd sizes as required.

    Makes no sense having nearly every seat occupied on the bottom level of the southern stand - afl members, while the top level is empty.

    This is it - keep winning and the business takes care of itself. Sponsors, gate, memberships, TV blockbusters.

    There's still a chance to get a game to the NT. GWS home game maybe? Adelaide home game? Have to weigh up the 700k (whatever it is) against Fortress MCG - number 1 priority should be wins, not revenue - wins take care of that. We need a top 2. Insurance against losing first week and having to go interstate.

    We know, because we can see, that winning increases the gate, membership numbers and Channel 7's appetite to seek more prime time games with us involved. What is less transparent is what it does for sponsorship revenues, although we can see if we gain any new sponsors.

    What I'm curious about, though, is whether the agreements we already have with sponsors have some sort of trigger clause based on performance which generates extra income for the club. For example, does Zurich, or any others sponsor, pay us more when we win more? Or if we get more prime time TV exposure? Is there anyone on Demonland who works in this area and can explain how these major sponsorship deals are structured?

    Typically sponsorship agreements have all the triggers you speak about plus of course a base level.

    The triggers are limited only by your imagination and negotiating skills. Finals are an obvious kicker.

    Ash Barty would be interesting. Her agreements would almost certainly include kickers for being number 1 in the rankings. As rankings were suspended for 2020 and she didn't play was she paid?

    Years ago I saw a number 1 golfer's deal and the kickers went for many pages. I suspect that the Formula 1 deals would be volume like.

    PS the world of digital platforms has of course widened measurement of "success goals" greatly. On a related note I would like to know to see some discussion of clubs assuming full control of their own websites.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
