What the fudge happened to Viney?

I will continue to bang on about giving him a 5 year deal. Silly decision given his body is forever breaking  down.

This is what  Max said  on radio on the 18th

"I've got no idea. I haven't seen too much of him. I always knew that he was targeting the Adelaide game and I haven't heard that he's had a setback" Max Gawn on Jack Viney and whether he'll be available this weekend

This is what Viney said on the 10th

“I will be cherry ripe for the Big Freeze, that’s for sure, but in terms of when I come back, (I’m) not 100 per cent sure, but it is tracking really well,”

Seems Big Max went off a bit early?

Without the financial terms it's hard to judge, but if the options were a contract that's 2 years too long or losing him to Geelong for a pick in the 30's of a severely compromised draft whilst we're in a flag window - I still lean towards being happy we kept him. We've made worse decisions, like bringing in big broken Ben Brown.

Harmes needs to go to Libba. He is their best extractor.

Too hard to tag Bont. I would let him go head to head with Trac. Lever to take him up forward?

Oliver head to head with McRae.

Caleb Daniels is IMO one of the best players in the competition. If we do not put a purely defensive player on him like Spargo or ANB he will destroy us. Fritsch and his 0 defensive efforts are a bad idea.

I think this is going to be a hard task for us at Marvel. The Dogs are deadly by foot and very fast. If they dominate clearances like I suspect they would, we will be in a world of pain. It is much harder to defend a quick clearance at Marvel which is smaller, and if we turn the ball over the way we did against Adelaide they will really hurt us.

I think our game is still very reliant on being able to attack.

Not sure we are as good when things aren't on our terms and the doggies will certainly make us pay at Marvel

damn. this has got to be the longest 2-3 week injury in history. does anyone know anything more? what is really going on?

One thing Viney has consistently shown though is that, when fit,  he can come bk in and have immmediate impact. we need him fr the finals and i’d much rather he’s injured now than later. Even so, he’s missed and will be especially missed v  the dogs fri eve,

I assume they are just taking their time to get it 100% because he seems to be in all the training pics

Damm so disappointed Viney is still out, surely we need to bring in another pure mid vs dogs at any rate. Even with them missing 2 quality mids they still go deeper than us.

Also who goes to Weightman, feel like he’s the type we have no matchup for.

If we are to have any chancing of winning this game we have to replace Weideman with Brown, While browns form has been average at best he has played a large number of good games at the dome and knows it well. Weideman is a very average KPF who has played half a dozen good games in his career and is not up to it. He has played two games since returning and would have been in the bottom 5 players both games.

I'd put Jordon on Libba. JJ doesn't win a lot of contested footy but is our best tackler, he can clamp down on Libba. Then Harmes to Bont who has to restrained, you can't let him rack up kicks in space, he'll cut us apart. Even if he gets 25 touches if they aren't out in the clear it's a good result.

Max and Jackson are our best hope of breaking even at stoppages.

I'd like to try a bit of back to the future with Nev Jetta as a defensive forward in the VFL to see how it looks. Geary did that job really well last year for the Saints. Mark Bagley for Essendon did it too. Once a defender loses the leg speed to stay with their man down back they struggle but Nev's tackling and aerial contesting is still strong. There's a slim chance he might have one last go in him in that role. Spargo and ANB will get the job this week, they beat a lot of dangerous half backs through work rate and positioning, but Daniel is the quality of player that you need to unsettle and force in to one on one contests I think.

If viney is fit, he needs to go H2H with libba.   They are the same player almost.  Tacklers won't stop Libba, we need someone who will beat him to the position over the ball. And stop that delivery to the dogs mids.

Viney might not beat him but if he halves his influence thats a huge win, as the bulldogs game play is based on midfield dominance.

Ruck taps against a rookie and a horrible tap ruckman in Sweet and English are vital also. Time to get that right.

Viney is not fit as already discussed on this thread.

Still 3 weeks away.

Bring Sparrow in for Brayshaw, Salem in for Jetta.  Harmes stands The Bont and have Bedford as Sub.

I'd have Hibberd stand the Bont. Done a great job on Dusty I think he can do the same thing to the Bont. Rivers to take Weightman.

Don't know about that, Fritch will have height advantage and is great in the air. I admit when it comes to ground he'd beat Fritch but that's what our small forward are for.

I did say that. If the delivery is good and Fritch kicks 4 or 5 it may nullify his impact

Don’t think he’s tall enough. Bont will kill him in the air. Lever to Bont.

We had no choice with ben. Tmac was in terrible form for a long time. Sam w still hasnt really fired.

And besides bb has only played three games. One of which was pretty good. Too early to call the bb a bad decision.

Agree re BB's history at Marvel Mr Old.

His height alone will be a problem for a shortish/under-manned Doggies last line.

Also being a smaller ground vs the G he'll get plenty of high ball coming in which, even if he doesn't mark, he should be able to compete and get it to ground.  Giving plenty of opportunity for our smalls/mediums to work off.

Something i just don't see the Weid doing much of.  Nor worrying them in the height dept in a way that BB would.

Unfortunately BB didn't do his chances any good over the weekend against the Swans as you would know doubt be aware.

Also having BB playing deep allows Big Maxy to hang out the back looking to mop up pressure bail out / panic kicks from inside our 50 and the kick ins creating another match up headache for the Dogs and hopefully further entries inside 50.

I don't believe our best intercept player and key defender should be manning the Bont Jaded.  Takes away one of our biggest weapons and i doubt he'd be able to go with him for long anyway.

Would we consider sacrificing Hunt however?  We don't really need the extra runner off HB IMV at the Dome given the confined space.  He'll probably struggle to find the gaps he often finds at the G on this smaller ground anyway.  Just a thought.

That leaves Rivers or Hibb to share Weightman?  Harmes sits on Libba for the most part and sacrifices his game also?

You dont tag Libba he is an extractor in the contest and would be close to untaggable. We play accountable midfield we don't usually tag and that should continue.  If anyone should have the close check its Daniels and if so it should be the only reason Melksham stays in the side.

Complete rubbish.  Inside players can definitely be tagged.  Libba feeds it out to all their runners, so stopping it at the source is imperative

what the [censored] is wrong with Viney. It was supposed to be a 1-2 weeker. now its bloody 6-7 weeks! come on club, we need some bloody reporting on this. He is a barometer for us.

How do you tag him? He plays completely inside the contest?

Oliver has been tagged in the past.  Harmes just ensures that he pushes him off the ball in the contest and just try to hinder his first touch

Its so annoying.  Going forward I think we should expect at most about 15 games a year from Jack, he will need to be managed forever.

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
