CHANGES: Rd 03 vs GWS

Probably no change, but could be tempted to take Gus out for Melksham potentially.

No change

Everyone played their role well.

Yeah tempted to say no change.

We are winning, whoever gets in needs to be banging the door down in the 2s

Is Weid or Brown looking at all likely? I cant honestly think of many who didnt hold up their end, Hunt maybe.

Hibberd for someone ... Jetta? Hunt?

VDB has apparently been good in the last couple of practise matches. In for Sparrow?

Apparently Hunt played on Butler and kept him to 8 disposals.

Sparrow was great tonight.

Vandenberg is finished.

It's a tricky one.

We had stars and lesser lights but the lesser lights all contributed at times so you'd be stiff to get dropped out of a winning side.

I'd be surprised if there is any change unless there is injury.

You have got to be joking.

Happy to hear your argument for Gus staying in.

Was borderline last week, poor this week IMO. 13 touches, 0 tackles tonight.

No change for mine.
But Melksham is a Goodwin favorite so I assume he comes in.
Hunt had a good game, so is safe from a Hibbo return for another week.

Because he is a good footballer who I think played well last week but was a little ordinary tonite, but under the circumstances with the spud bit might be acceptable. Melksham on the other hand is no where near as good as Gus and he wouldn't know what defensive pressure or tackling was. Give me Gus any day.

A few stuff ups but some important touches at the right time, good contests, presented well, and the Saints transition game was slow which means the wings did a nice job.

Still think Jones is below Gus in the pecking order, at least in terms of a Melksham inclusion

I'm not a massive rap for Melksham's form over the last year or so, but I would be open to the idea of dropping Gus to help him find form. Worked a treat in 2018 after all.

Disagree he played well last week. For mine, his chasing and pressure was poor, but it went under the radar because he got a couple of 'lucky' tackles where players ran straight into him. Disposal was poor last week also. 5 clangers and 4 turnovers last week. I like Gus, but he's not in form by any stretch and from a culture point of view we have to back up the talk from the offseason about egos and not carry the popular blokes for game after game when they're not playing well.

Jones had 14 touches, 3 tackles and a goal.

I'd have him ahead of Gus as it stands. Not by a lot, but pretty surprised with the low bar people have set for Gus these days.

Not me. Gus is a shadow of the player he was. Slow, poor disposal, hardly gets the ball.

50% kicking efficiency so far this year.

Also rated as below average for pressure acts.

Spot on BBO. Our bottom 4-6 players are finally showing a bit and contributing to the team. All goes well and for me no changes. Stay with this side. Fix up some of our bad skill errors when under no pressure and away we go. Also I know the kid is only 18 but Jackson needs to learn to use his body more .Gets pushed around a bit easily. Small critic but he has huge upside like Kozie who can only get better.

Not too worried about the disposals. I’m surprised Jones had 3 tackles because it looked like he missed at least 5. And his goal was both a solid piece of smart running and a concern that the world was going to end before he got down to that ball.

He’s a dreadful pressure player that’s why he’s not on ball. But given he’s on the wing he really won’t be expected to have good pressure numbers.

He definitely needs to lift to really lock in his spot but I don’t think he’s at immediate risk this week

Worth remembering that it's not all that long ago he was in a moon boot with a serious foot injury. He missed most of the preseason, and it costs. Worth persevering with while he builds form/touch - though not a free pass either.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
