POSTGAME: Rd 02 vs St. Kilda

I think what we have been talking about in the last few odd pages here are not only the tidy up points under the guises of influence called Yze and Williams, but a real development of players themselves to explore new tactics and learning off opposition.

I reckon they have all spent hours and hours watching replays etc.. long may (no pun) it go on.

I’m giving him this year, win 2 more games and we play finals 2017 and 2020. Our list is now at its best and fittest in years. As flag favourites he needs to deliver

Who says we are flag favourites?  Certainly not the bookies and, by extension, not the punters either.

It’ll be announced soon

One thing that I learnt from the Saints match is that the other Jones boy is a very angry young man.

And only barely AFL standard. Could never understand why so many here wanted him. If he wasn’t bald and called Jones, nobody would have taken a second look.

You obviously have not watched much of him play throughout his career, he is arguably better than his older brother.  Definitely AFL standard anyway!!

i'd say he's not better than his older brother, but he is clearly a good, ordinary afl player

He’s learning to be.

Haha deadset what a load of rubbish. I think it is you that needs to watch more football.

Zac Jones is not only a [censored] bloke but an ordinary footballer. Tough faux guy that was trying to snipe the young boys in Jordon and Pickett over the weekend.

He butchers the footy consistently and saints fans hate him.

To think that he's better then Nathan is simply laughable.

Come back when Zak has won 3 club best and fairests.

I would actually put him and Nathan pretty close in ability.

The only main difference is we had a bunch of chumps playing for us and Nathan won a few best and fairests, while Zac was surrounded by a much stronger Sydney team.

Nathan Jones would not have won ANY best and fairests had he played in the same Sydney teams.

i saw Zac trying to lift his team by trying to get physical. (Nothing wrong with that)

Was not having a shot at either of the Jones boys though, was simply stating that Zac is AFL standard and the difference between their abilities is not huge.

Either way each to their own opinions, it was just an offhand comment but i stand by it.   Both are better than average players but neither are stars.

Agree totally...  never saw the fuss about him.  Average player at best.

are we at a point now that we can concede that Dr. was correct saying that Jackson isn't a natural forward? He's now kicked 3 goals in 8 games playing solely fwd with brief stints in the ruck.

(For the record, Logan Mcdonald has kicked 5 in 2 games)

Thought he looked much better up forward last night. Can easily see him playing up forward effectively, can you yet?

While he looked okay up forward, he did his best work last night when he was in the ruck and around the ground.

His 2nd efforts and how clean he is below knees is ridiculously good.

Agreed, I just thought he looked better at the very least

I just watched this game again to confirm some things.

Saints pressure was excellent in the first half, I’d say not far off their 2nd half v West Coast. Seeing how WC crumbled and we ate it and walked through it gives me confidence.

5 dropped marks and easy misses stopped us beating them by 10 goals, we all knew that at the time, but Essendon beat them by 10 goals with the worst pressure seen nearly ever.

West Coast look a much more gettable I f we keep up the same pressure we have in the first 4 rounds, they don’t like it.

Conclusion. We’re dealing with and applying pressure better than ever before. To my eye we’re applying it longer than the majority of teams and it’s key to our success.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
