Scott is a 25 year old mature ager in the Marlion Pickett mould who can make an impact right away. But he’s played one freakin game and already you’re calling him better than sparrow?

My point is Scott was playing vafa for a few years, only just scraped and afl position. Sparrow has been playing state footy as a junior and vfl, high pick in the end yet shows no afl traits, struggles to even just play his role 

Incorrect, Sparrow is playing because he has AFL traits, good on the club for sticking with him & giving him another chance.

What is a pass mark today for Sparrow to retain his spot?

I think our development is getting better from what I have seen. That has to be married up with picking the right talent and that will only be revealed after a few years.

Just remember what our player development was like from the early 2000s to around 2013 compared to these days.

Of the players drafted in the National Draft over 2019 and 2020 Melbourne have 5 playing today.  Bulldogs had 2 last night.  

Perhaps I misunderstood the initial point.

Other than draft picks who have gone (almost) straight into the senior team our development via Casey has been less than stellar.

Is it any worse than other clubs? No idea.

My traditional whinge is that we have such little luck with our 28 plus year olds going on. If you can get two or three of those who perform at a high level week in week out list balance is so much easier.

Hopefully May breaks the mould

Last year’s draftees (Jackson, Pickett, Rivers) all look likely for us. However, I worry about a potential void from the previous 2 drafts in terms of talent, rather than development.

But as I said in another thread, we just need a couple of that group to come in and fill a role. We have Sparrow, Jordon and Spargo playing from that group today. None need to be match winners, but all have important roles.

Jetta, Melksham, Jones and Hibberd (although he was better last year) did drop off pretty sharply after 2018. And then we obviously had Lewis retire as well.

Vandermeer looks great, pacey, tough and would've looked good running on our wings

We swap draft picks all the time so an influx of good young players is rare.

 

Is it even worth mentioning how unlucky many of our kids have been when it comes to injury?  Several of the younger guys who are in that 'might crack a game soon' category have been knocked around repeatedly.  Not all of that can be blamed on the club.

Oliver, Fritsch and Spargo would be just about only players 20-24yrs old who haven't been seriously interrupted by repeat injuries. Toss in Hore and Smith in the same group, since they were under-25 at the start of the year.
