Tomlinson any chance to possibly miss out or moved to the wing?

No chance on the wing, and I reckon there's every chance Freo slide a key defender forward if needed, and if not will play Fyfe forward. I expect we'll keep the 3 talls. Tomlinson has the endurance and straight line speed for smaller opponents (if not the agility). May has to be a chance to take Fyfe and slide Tomlinson on to Tabs as well.

Agree with this, and alternatively either he or May could try and drift forward for a brief spell if they have Fyfe in the center. With the longer games and fewer subs, guys like Tomlinson could really shine given he won't have to come off often, and with his height might be able to take a break forward to give Jackson/TMac/Maxy more time on the bench if needed.

I'm really hoping we see the work that Burgess put into them, not just this pre-season but also last around running out games far better than the opposition. I felt this was a big hinderance towards our guys last year who's trained around this. So another pre-season of hard running, should hopefully mean we run out games and finish off quarters really strongly.

Gives us greater flexibility as he clan go forward and Tommy back.

Fully agree - Tomlinson to the wing again, please - with Petty at CHB to start, swinging with TMac at CHF, and repeat.

Rumour from a mate at golf this morning (post-game 19th hole at a leisurely pace) who has heard from a Freo-based mate that Tabenar currently has rather severe back spasms that are not disappearing at any 'play-able' rate.  May may well have a field day if this is the case - and I emphasise 'may' coz he may be picked up by Petty or Lever. (...may...)

If this is true they wont have a single tall up forward will have to play one of their defenders as a forward

If we don't do thus we don't improve and we all know we need to.

Trust me Goody hasn't got time on his hands and  couple of other changes should happen on the wing and up forward.

Respectfully disagree 58er. its fanciful and unfair to both Bowey and Jetta to think an 18 year old new recruit with minimal footy last year could come in and out perform a 10+ year veteran who's craft is sublime even as his physical prime passes.

I'd suggest at least 4-22 weeks learning, building skills and body in the VFL would be what Bowey needs in order to eclipse Jetta. can you imagine Bowey one-on-one versus say Green (GWS) or Cameron (Lions) ..? He'd get murdered. Jetta can hold his own, even if they'd take him on the burst.

The kids will come in when they force it based on accumulated form in the VFL, not because they're new and shiny, and like all new things offer the promise of future glory. Jetta has a well earnt reputation as a solid and experienced backman, and while his time will come, it should only come when others exceed him in realty, not imaginations.

Petty to CHB and Tomlinson out of side. He is too slow so freo will burn him up on the wing.

Bowery may take Jets place in the team in a year or two, when’s learnt half of what Jetta has forgotten about defending. Jetta may have lost some pace, but his contested defensive work, poise and experience still make him the best option for deep back, and Hunt can be the last back when we’re stretched forward...

That would be the safe thing to do..... Bowey in a year or two would be ridiculous, he should be playing plenty this year.

Jetta unless he has resurgence should be down at Casey helping our kids develop imo.

Jetta is a lock down defender and if he does have a small to guard he struggles to keep up with them.. Would not be picking him back pocket purely for the sake of him filling the only role he can play.  He also offers very little on the rebound out of defence.  His best is well behind him.  Hope i am wrong and he kills it though, loved him as player for long time.

Dont let the facts get in the way of a good storey

He was a very effective midfielder until Goodwin trashed his carreer

Kozzie need to learn to keep his feet no where near it at the moment in my view

Look at where Brayshaw finished in the best and fairest that year for a better guide on his season. No where near Gawn and Oliver.

Kozzie could be stronger but at least he’s not wearing concrete boots like Gus. The only person to blame for Gus’ form has been himself.

Id have Brayshaw over Jordon but if they’re setting a standard of fitness then I’ll support that.

The other option is Harmes to a wing and trust Brayshaw to mind Fyfe at times, if he’s up for it.

I’d give Rivers those jobs if Hibberd can’t come up, then Bowey is up the ground more. Jetta couldn’t make up ground and spoil Lachie Hunter yet alone a quick small forward. He just doesn’t have that burst in the legs anymore. Nev’s power and timing made up for a lack of burst speed but it’s gone now.

I really like Bowey but he needs to earn a game. He didn’t do enough against the dogs imo.

What does this say about our recruitment? Recruited as a wingman but is too slow?

I’d say there’s a reason we have a new head of football.

Well I’d go Bowey, Deak Smith, or one of the mids off half back. Or even go big with Petty. If we’re going to be too slow we may as well be tall

Let's not forget, that he was recruited as a run all day, taller wingman, not for speed. Langdon is about speed. Tomlinson had a massive disadvantage last year that the quarters were reduced in time so it didn't allow his strengths to show (Hill from St Kilda was another similar player). It does show how highly rated he was that he held his spot as a defender. This year his endurance will be a massive boost for us, plus Langdon's endurance has gone through the roof from when he was at Freo.

If we win the midfield battle and get enough of the ball I think we will win. Probably an over simplistic analysis but I really think that if we get on top there we have enough quality around the rest of the park to win.

Walters is a matchwinner. His absence is huge

Interesting rumour, I wonder if they'd then play Darcy and try to always have one of their rucks forward. That'd be a big advantage to us as one is underdone while the other is inexperienced, I'd be getting Max to run them around all day and try and drag them deep forward with him when possible.

Don't think we'd want Tomlinson and Petty in the same defence.  Both have a lot to offer but both have a little bit of a weakness in leg speed. This is largely made up for by their other attributes and team mates around them ... but this week against Freo I fear they could cut us up if we go too tall and slow.

May, Lever, Tomlinson, Rivers, Salem, Hunt, Jetta - that's our back 7 for mine.

Will be interesting howe use Gawn - often against inexperienced rucks he has a field day with D50 marks - given their forward line I think Freo would be better placed kicking it in along the ground!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
