So we have picks 17, 37, 49, 57, and 94 and 4 uncontracted list spots given no announcements yet on some players.

Likely that:

  • pick 94 isn't used
  • we sign Hibberd for a year
  • we sign Hore for a year (if his body is ok) as he is better than pick 49 or 57 in the draft as depth
  • Declase I am assuming will miss out

If that's right, we only select two players in the draft. So we need to do some pick swaps to get whatever value we can out of 49 and 57 i.e. swap pick 37, 49, and 57 for pick 32 etc

Thanks BMj.

Not sure if I'm reading your post correctly.

I'm still including Hore and Declase as they are officially still on our list.  The mfc announcement is a bit vague on Chandler's status but for now have included him as a Rookie.  So I make our count:  34 Senior players and 6 A Rookies.

As an aside, B Rookies are additional to the max total allowed of 42.  We can't substitute a senior or A rookie player for B rookies.  So at this stage our total will be 42.

Unless we move on Hore and Declase we have only 2 senior list spots and zero A Rookie spots.

Hi Premiers, thanks for your fantastic work. I’m hearing that Chandler will be upgraded as part of this signing so I had the following, I seem to have one less main list than you atm, who have I missed?:

Main list 34 players:

May, Salem, Harmes, Petracca, Jackson, Viney, Lever, Spargo, Brayshaw, Gawn, Bedford, Oliver, Hibberd, Langdon, Laurie, Bowey, Melksham, Rosman, Tomlinson, Jordan, Rivers, TMcDonald, Weideman, Hunt, Neale-Bullen, Fritsch, Sparrow, Baker, Petty, Pickett, Chandler, JSmith, BBrown, Dunstan

35 = Hore???

Rookie A:

Daw, DSmith, MBrown, Turner

5= Declase??

So we have between 2-4 main list spots to fill and 0-2 category A rookie spots to fill, we can then take an additional 2 category B rookies regardless to take the list to 44.

We have to take at least pick 17 + upgrading JJ and Chandler.

If we keep Hore we will take pick 17 and can either draft two more to our main list or a combination of one rookie and one main list.

If we keep Hore and Declase as a rookie we will take pick 17 and can draft one more main list or take one more rookie A.

If we delist both Hore and Declase we can draft pick 17 + 3 more players either 3 main list or 1 main list 2 rookies A or 2 main list one rookie A.

I need a lie down…

Thank you.

Good analysis.

From what I can see the only difference between our respective lists is that I have Chandler as a Rookie and on your list he is in the Seniors.  Without him and with Hore included in the Seniors we both have 34.

Again Chandler is the difference in our count of Rookies.  Include him and we both have 6.

Total 40.

We have maxed the A Rookies at 6, so have 2 senior spots to get us to the max allowed of 42 but no A rookie spots for now.

Agreed we can open more senior and A rookie spots if we lose Hore and or Declase.  If we lose both that gives us 4 list spots.  The number of senior/ A rookie spots depends on how Chandler is classified.

I doubt Hore will be offered a contract, we have J Smith/Turner/Tomlinson as tall defenders, plus M Brown/Daw can both go back as well.  I can't see Declase being retained which is a bit of a shame, I think with more VFL games he may have kept his spot.

Still think we should offer pick 49 for Brander, leave 57 for Woey Jnr.

Out: Jones, Jetta, AVB, Lockhart, Hore, Declase plus Bradtke Cat B

In: Dunstan, Brander, Pick 17, Pick 37, Woey

I'm assuming that leaves 1 more player we can pick up either in Rookie draft or pre-season/mid-season draft.

Pick 17 for Conway(Developing Ruck)

Pick 37 Best available

Gives us 2 mids, Tall Forward, Ruck and another players from Trade/Draft period

True. I think it's been reported he's got another one year deal though?

Don't the rules require every club to take at least three picks in the draft?

We have to use a pick to upgrade JJ and while it’s not completely confirmed it seems likely we also need to use another pick to upgrade Chandler so if that eventuates we only have to take one more player through the draft. In theory we could use just 17 although it seems more likely there will be more, particularly if we delist Hore and/or Declase.

I’m sorry, who is this rookie JJ?

Yes it’s a full house now, considering 3 draft picks to be added (17,37,49). It’s a cruel game.  Hore and Declase are quality backup players but cannot afford to carry too many such players with tighter lists.  Actually it’s happening more and more across the league. Blues just cut Gibbons who has shown he’s AFL quality across the past 3 years.

James Jordan. We offered him a senior list deal mid year but we still have to use a draft pick to officially upgrade him this year right?

I honestly don’t know. But that pick if needed can be 113 if we want.

Updated for today's signings:

  • Baker and Bedford as senior players.
  • Chandler, Turner, D. Smith, Daw as Rookies.

All have been assumed to be for one year.  The club's announcement is a little vague.  If anyone has seen other official info on the above please let me know.

image.png.e4f2053a8ec1c5e52c8d28ec9edadeca.png

This leaves Hore, Declase and Hibberd as unsigned altho it is reported that Hibberd has been offered a one year deal.

On what I could find, today's signings don't change the List numbers or mix.  We have 34 senior players and 6 A Rookies for a total of 40.  The max allowed across those two categories is 42 so we have two (Senior) vacancies.  To open more vacancies we would need to lose Declase or Hore.

Love this thread….Thanks again L.H for you continued efforts.

After the GF I took a screenshot of our list and sent it to my mates who just so happen to support Collingwood, Richmond and the Swans and said “cop a bit of that action”.

Absolutely right. That pick then counts to our 3 draft picks we must use meaning if we upgrade both Chandler and Jordan, which I’m pretty sure we need to do, then we only HAVE to use 17, I think we’ll use more, but someone was asking about us having to take 3 in the draft and I was explaining that didn’t necessarily mean drafting three new players. Hope that makes sense.

If we upgrade Jordan, we have 2 spots on the main list and zero spots on the rookie list (34 & 6), we do have 2 rookie b list spots, but dont need to use a draft pick we can auto upgrade him (Jordan)

do we have to/have we confirmed JJ is definitely being upgraded?

as he was delisted last season he has only spent 1 out of a now 4 possible seasons as a rookie so we may have kept him down there and only upgraded chandler who with a 2yr deal must be upgraded as it takes him into a 5th season with us? -still not sure he's worth a 2yr deal and wouldn'tve been disappointed if he'd taken the crows offer but does that mean we can still keep hore and then take pick 17, 37 consume some for Woewodin and then upgrade chandler at the end? with AMW to come as a rookie (cat B)? have i mathed that right?

This has the updates for:

  • Mitch Brown 1 year Rookie contract
  • Recruitment of Luke Dunstan for 2 years
  • List and Draft details

Posters have noted above some players have been offered contracts but not yet confirmed by the club.  These are shown in green.

image.png.c84639f7dfed73445e6f5fcde8bd0f17.png

An important thing to note are the List size Rules at the bottom.  The overall allowed is 37 to 42 comprised of 36 to 38 Senior spots and 4-6 'A' Rookie spots.  In addition 2 'B' Rookie spots can be added for 44.

As we currently have the max allowed 6 'A' Rookie we have only 2 Senior list spots for a total of 40.   More list spots become available if those rumoured to not have a contract, Hore, Smith and Chandler were to depart.

However, we currently have 5 live draft picks.  Pick 94 will go to upgrade Jordan.  He was contracted for 2 years in April but we still need to use a draft pick to officiate he being a Senior player.

This leaves us with 17, 37, 49, and 57.  These picks may well change and/or 37, 49 and 57 are used for Woewodin and our NGA players.  If so, we will need to free up more list spots.

Will add Dunstan to the list of 'Ins' with the next update.

If you check out Premiers table you’ll see Jordan has to be upgraded as like Chandler he’s been offered a two year deal (2023). We have 2-4 spots on our main list (if we delist Hore) and 0-2 cat A rookie spots (if we delist Declase) once JJ is upgraded.

I'm guessing we aren't making room for Andy Moniz-Wakefield by the looks of it and now seems Taj Woewodin may also miss out on a spot.

he could be a 'B' rookie if he goes undrafted and join straight onto the list potentially or we could invite him to train a la Deak smith

I am 99.9% certain that Jordan was effectively made a senior player in April this year:  Club announcement JJ signs on

It doesn't state he has a senior spot but we would not have been able to recruit Declase and Turner in the mid-season draft if he remained a rookie as we would have exceeded the 6 allowed rookies.  Using a draft pick (94 or 112) is a mere formality.

13 hours ago, dazzledavey36 said:

By leaving out Hore and Declase, we will have room for Taj Woewodin. Depending on how things pan out in the draft, we would also have scope to rookie AMW as a Category B but he’s more in the long term speculative development mode.

What about the option of bundling 17, 37, 49 together to get higher up the draft (7 from richmond and a third round back next year) and try and get Mac Andrew?  Upgrade JJ with 94, take Taj Woewodin with 57.

has anyone had any further news re Hore, Declase or even Hibbo confirmation?  I havent seen anything.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions.
