There are several gay AFL level footballers and that does included top quality players. There has been for twenty years just that I know of, and who knows how long before that.  Ah, it must have been such fun to politely smile along to the 90s Footy Show.

Anyway, the only connection to the thread is someone raising it as an example of how much pressure there is in the AFL community to not have any apparent 'vulnerabilities' and how that can lead to silently escalating stress for anyone who feels like they aren't keeping up.  Not least, a senior coach of a club that is imploding at every level.

The difference is it's cool to be a lesbian, not so much to be gay, also female athletes have been out and proud lesbians in most sports for years,, men's sport not so much, can you name me many NFL players NBA players. Or any sport with openly gay players.

For him personally it is easy to see how you'd be crushed as a new senior coach of a season where the club simply failed to function and it seems like everyone was on blame and attack mode as soon as things got difficult. Add to the the collection of 'we saved the club' coterie types who want a say, the large number of disgruntled ex-players, bloody Covid, and the massive pressure that comes from the ever-present threat of the club actually closing down on your watch...

I'm not sure any individual could have achieved much with North Melbourne this season.

But what about next season and beyond?  Things may be even worse and the thought of the club folding or being merged away is one that has to start lurking in the back of people's minds.

They have less talent under 24 years old than we have talent just from the 2019 draft.  They need to find a ruck and a key forward, we're seen this season how much their midfield relies on Ziebell and Cunnington, both currently 29, and supported by the likes of Aaron Hall (also 29), Jared Polec (28) and Shaun Higgins (32 and leaving).  They have a couple of respectable key defenders but Robbie Tarrant is crucial and, again, is 31.

They're delisted 11 players, will lose/trade perhaps four more, and they've recently cut six assistant coaches of all kinds of levels.

They've got no financial reserves, the AFL's smallest supporter base which has already been bled pale for extra contributions, dysfunctional club leadership, unhappy players and an old list with not a single potential star coming through among the kids.

I hate saying it, but right now it is hard to imagine North Melbourne still operating at AFL level in five years time.

North's youth is not the problem - Simpkin, Zuhaar, Larkey, LDU, Thomas and Scott can all play and they have picks 2 and 9 in what looks like a good draft for KPs who are hard to find.

They have good senior role models in Cunnngton, Ziebell, Tarrant and Goldstein.

It's the black hole in their 24-27yo that's the big issue.  They are trying to offload Brown and Polec for picks, and the only others who are AFL standard are Anderson, McDonald and Dumont - hardly inspiring.

They are in for 4 years of rebuild pain at a very bad time.

They were saying that about us 5 years ago. In a competition of 18 teams in sport native to only Australia the talent pool IMO is stretched too far. There is always going to be 1 or 2 teams that are close to not being competitive. It is North and Adelaide at present. The AFL created a competition with 18 teams IMO they over estimated the size of the talent pool.

I'd add that they also under-invested in developing that pool.  Eyes always on the bling at AFL HQ, and the second-tier game and development pathways have been neglected for far too long.

I think Roos is perfect for them in a consultancy role. He’ll make sure they put the right people in the right roles. That’s the critical thing. Him and Jackson did it for us when we were a shambles so he can do it for North.

I hope Rhyce Shaw recovers quickly. He did the right thing stepping aside to sort himself out.

Interesting. Not so much the person, but the speed of the decision. Perhaps the NMFC already knew from Rhyce Shaw that he wasn't coming back and had his permission to start looking. If not, it put NMFC in a very difficult position if they were interviewing potential new coaches while uncertain whether Shaw was coming back or not. 

Edit: Thinking about it a bit more I suspect Shaw and the NMFC had been negotiating a departure package so the club knew he was leaving.  And I suspect had his permission to look for his replacement.

I find this incredibly sad for a young man having done a lot of work to get into a position to land a senior job. Mental health does  not discriminate, its had a big affect on my family and i know the battles it comes with. Its a timely reminder for lots of us to check in on mates... it absolutely costs nothing to ask if someone is going ok. 

Hope Rhyse finds the balance in his life he needs to get better.

With all due respect to Shaw, do we know it's a mental health problem? It could be something else. I can think of two other options but would rather not speculate.

Look that's a really good point, i am only going from what i have and probably many have heard, im not sure what you are alluding to and dont want to know and im not being smart. Whatever the case, i hope he is ok.
