I would not handle losing Oliver at all, really hope this is all just conjecture and Mcclure trying to stay relevant. Tracc talked about Oliver and himself stepping up into the more mature leader type role. Can't see any credibility in this story at all and Mcclure should get an absolute serve for this if it isnt true.

Cus there is none!!! He does things like this ALL the time in hopes of starting a fire — loves his Blues and is always trying cheekily to get ball rolling on things in hopes one day he can get a player to like the sound of it.

It’s been totally 100% RUBBISHED today by several coterie insiders, Clarrie is going nowhere and doesn’t wanna go anywhere. As for Petracca calling his manager wanting out... oh PLEASE gimme a spell what a hunk-of-tripe!!! Impeccable source or not it’s just so far off the mark it’s not funny

I’m anti-Goodwin - but the PLAYERS are PRO Goodwin so anyone suggesting tossing Goody is misguided if they expect a player group to be excited about it!!! My view is, instead of seeing themselves as part of the problem like they should, and look to do whatever they can to Improve - whining and sooking by leaking this type of tripe to media is just weak minded BS that epitomises WHY we missed finals.

we need a fwd, praise run and polish, get that and get players who are committed and enjoy another Burgess pre season and we should be fine. But yes, Goodwin is rightly under pressure and would be gone if out of contract but that doesn’t mean he can’t recover.

How do you know the players are pro_Goodwin?  Actions speak louder than words. We now have Petracca, Viney and Oliver linked to rumour talks. A key player and impressive person in TMac on the way out the door. Brayshaw looking for all the world like playing with us gives no joy. How many do you think will still be there if at the end of Goodys contract we get a new coach with a new plan. Even if it was Clarkson players will go..

how do I know? ASK THEM!!! Coaching change this late will cause EXACT uncertainty players fear, but next year if the call is warranted and club makes it early it’ll be what it is, needed. But he’s not done for just yet as I envisage as players do another Burgo PS & 2-3 needs players coming in will have them purring early 2021

We have VINEY alone linked but only cus he’s out of contract and ALL players in that pos would do same Ayer what he’s been through but he will re sign assuming club wants him too which they do and we ALL know why, but his b&f finish alone will reaffirm to him his value. The fact you can say PETRACCA let alone Clarrie is linked to trade rumours after what’s “linked” them is absolutely the most overblown zephyr of a call I’ve seen in a while. Petracca rumour oh my lord give me strength!!!

Clarrie said last week to 2 coterie members he can’t WAIT to see what the off season brings and that he & others think a Burgess pre season (para phrasing obv) #2 that actually Elsa into the season without 9 wk interruption and 20 min Q’s might alone be the catalyst we need to break into top 4. Some words re hoping we land a fwd but that Jackson & Weid will be a great pairing as they were b4 Jacko’s injury. So settle on the OMG ALL 3 want out hysteria and total crap... cus it’s just that, crap!

I think if the club is stagnating like ours is right now then it's understandable there will be some unrest. Doesn't necessarily mean they will leave though.

But they might next year.  Contract positions for our highly rated youngsters:

2021 RFA:  Salem.  OOC: Oliver, Wedieman, Rivers and Jackson.

This year is Salem's 'pre RFA' year when clubs get more in a trade than they will as an FA compensation pick.  eg  Daniher's failed attempt to Sydney last year.

2022:  RFA:  Petracca and Brayshaw .  Next year is their 'pre RFA' year.

imv Goodwin has 2021 or some of those players will walk (if for no other reason than they want success ie regularly contend for a premiership) and we will have little leverage.

My sense is that just making finals next year will not cut it.  We need a really successful first half 2021 to get those players to re-sign, then go deep into the finals.

Watch this space.  If the 2021 OOC players haven't re-signed before the middle of next year we should start to worry.

From memory, this happened last year around exit interview time. Rumours of players wanting out. None of which eventuated.

Sometimes I think the issue is as simple as a player expressing disappointment about something in an exit interview which then get spread as a rumour and mutates slightly ("Petracca was upset we didn't make finals" becomes "Petracca's upset at Goodwin that we didn't make finals", for example).

I usually take the view that where there's smoke there's fire, but nothing came of any of this last year so I am sceptical of these "X wants out" rumours.

Couldn't agree more.

So sick of this blame the coach mentality.  Time more of our players started talking a leaf out of the book of guys like Gawn, Trac, Viney and Steven May and took ownership for their own and the teams predicament.

I think it's great that Patracca his lifted his personal performance to an elite level, but I think the next step is for guys like him Oliver and the aforementioned guys to take some initiative and drag the teams performance along with them.  I'm not saying that we necessarily have a bunch of selfish players who don't play a team game, I just think it's the got to be the next stage in our evolution from being an average team with talent to becoming a champion side.

I'm also hoping that this years second tier of somewhat underperforming guys with talent like Harmes, Melksham, T Mac, Tomlinson, Weid, Fritsch, Hannan, Spargo, Smith, ANB, Brayshaw, Preuss, O Mac and Hunt can take a leaf out of the book of guys like Gawn, Trac and May to go or get back to the next level and lift them selves to the required standard on a regular basis.  I think it's a poor excuse for us to keep blaming Harmes lack of performance this season on being played out of position.  Perhaps he also needs to take a mature stance and have a difficult conversation with Goodwin about playing him as a back.  Alot of us here, myself included love Fritsch, but his set shot goal kicking accuracy is a disgrace, has let us down on multiple occasions this season in big games and something he needs to fix or he will forever be just a good player, not a great one.

My mistake, that should read I just can't understand why people take any notice of the sh*t that comes out of the media.

Thanks for the clarification.

I hope you’re not conflating “all media” with “Lunkhead footy pundits”. There are still reputable and trustworthy news sources in the world, y’know.

Seemingly every AFL player watches the NBA.

And seemingly every NBA player who is on a bad team likes to jump off as soon as they can  - contract or no contract - and get to a good team.

Guys are now getting paid enough that whether it's as free agents or pre-agents (the year prior or maybe even 2 years prior) they will start pushing for trades if their club doesn't have a path to success.

Have been saying for years that this highlights a huge flaw in the AFL's free agency system, while trying to maintain an fair and even competition through the draft.

The high placed teams like Richmond and particularly Geelong have been able to constantly top up with free talent via free agency and able to pay them unders, because of the value players rightly put on sucess.

Yes the club that looses the player gets somewhat compensated via draft picks, but the club that gains the free agent doesn't need to pay anything with respect to draft picks.  In my veiw, they need to be made to give up a draft pick they have which is equivalent of the compensation pick received by the other club.  It would still be free agency, because the club loosing the player can't prevent the trade.  The giving up of equivalent compensation picks also needs to made retrospective to penalise the likes of Hawthorn, Geelong and Richmond for the beinfit of a more even competition going forward.

You slightly miss the point. The reason Goody is staying is that he has a contract. One that was extended on a whim. The players see that and must wonder what is going on too. Why are you confident Oliver wont leave for another 2-3 years and even then only if things dont turn around? i would like to know Y.  It is only rumour at this stage but I pose this question.

On a whim... lol. There was no considered, thought out review of the new contract by the Footy Dept and Board... Almost like your post.

I mean if I worked for such a disappointing organisation I would at least wanna look around... but I guess I have rarely worked anywhere where I liked more than 2 or 3 people, and the rest were absolute flogs, but that is the nature of the industry I'm in.

I highly doubt that Oliver or Trac are going anywhere, because even if they wanted to, the club would never ever let them go while contracted. I cannot think of any trade offer that would even tempt the club to consider it. It would be a PR disaster, not to mention would set our team back a decade.

The best thing this club can do in the off season, assuming Goodwin is staying, is moving heaven and earth to get some top quality assistants, and hopefully another pacey wingman (and also a crumbing forward, and a FF, but like... wishful thinking all 3 would happen), and actually make finals next year!

Elite players who can have their choice of teams, eventually get tired of playing for loser clubs who do not give them the opportunity to play finals or win flags. They either leave or they stay because the money is too good. That is just the reality.

Clearly there was no deep thought in giving Goodwin an extention.  How has he performed since the extension, 17th, 9th. with question marks on whether he can coach or not still lingering.

On a slightly different take. The players and managers are about to get a dose of reality. List sizes will be cut most likely in 2 stages meaning there will be a few unemployed players. Next the AFL have yet to set caps and club spending on players. The soft cap has been cut, clubs have borrowed money from the AFL soon to be paid back with interest. Clubs are waiting to see what and who they can afford and the million dollar contracts wont be there. Carlton can throw all the money around they like, ben brown probably regrets turning down the 3 years on significant money and Jeremy cameron is still negotiating as he took a massive payout this year.

Reality is about to bite the players and the industry.

There are plenty of organizations that have codes of ethics but that doesn't stop people abusing it.

If we lost either Petracca or Oliver and Goodwin stayed.  We would have very few members next year.  i for one would flip out.

If we renew Viney for 5 years i would also be really unhappy.  He would be 32 and there is zero guarantee he will ever do the team things  like dishing the ball off to a player with red and blue.  Effort is there but he shows very little footy intellect.

This goes double for me as well!

What I’m stating is that I’ve been told by an impeccable source that Petracca phoned his Manager and asked, if his Manager thought it would it be possible to get a deal done. His Manager shot the idea down as being totally impossible.
Now, this may have been a spontaneous call from a highly emotional and at times immature young man, however, I believe it happened and if it did, it demands an immediate inquiry.
TBH, my sense of this being true is so strong, that if I had Pert or Bartlett’s numbers, I would have contacted them to at least get them to investigate directly with the source.

This doesn't make sense to me.

He's finally unlocked much of his potential with a breakout AA season and he considers Goody a ''Father figure''.

He's also very grateful to Burgess, who got him fitter than he's ever been.

He loves his teammates, especially Salem and Oliver.

I don't dismiss out of hand everything I read on here, but I'm going to dismiss this one. It doesn't add up.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
