Clarko will be laughing his head off. I reckon they offered a cheap 2nd year knowing he was probably out the door, pushes another club into committing overs. Gets them more compo

FMD didn't we learn anything from giving Lewie one year too many?

If we do this, we will be suckers

If, if by chance Viney were to leave as a RFA, this Smith UFA recruitment would destroy any compo we might get for Jack. Surely the club know what they are doing?!!! Or does a UFA not attract compo anymore? I'm not sure

Jack better stay!

Smith's likely too old to draw compensation unless the money is a crazy amount.

If Viney goes there's still a chance we match and trade.

If not and we are keen to sign Smith and it won't draw any compensation due to his age we could always trade for him instead. Give Hawthorn a token late pick upgrade.

We can protect ourselves by making the second year conditional on a number of games in the first year. Or add other incentives. The most important questions are whether Smith has anything left and if he makes us noticeably better and helps us become a contender. Most things after that can be worked around.

Always liked Smith as a player but Goodwin needs to stop topping up like we finished fourth this year.

This is a 32 year old Smith not a 26 year old Smith.

Goodwin is ruining the list profile that he inherited from Jackson and Roos.

Jetta and Jones should retire this year. How will they feel if Smith is brought in?

Always very interesting seeing how people respond to trade targets.

We’ve had how many players roll through the wing position in the last few years and still have one that is left empty.

Smith would be a great addition for the role he can play, he’s been one of the best wingmen in the game for near on a decade. Ed Langdon has been talked about as one of the recruits of the year on here and has had an enormous impact on our game. Smith could take him to another level again with his knowledge and leadership.

Fills a position with a much better option than what we currently have and will help Langdon/Baker become better players as well. Also keeps another one of our NQR blokes (Jones/Melksham/AVB/ANB etc) out of the side so our depth becomes better.

I saw it mentioned elsewhere, but the way to improve our bottom 6 players is to keep recruiting guys that fit in our best 10-12. He ticks all the boxes.

I see the pros and the cons with Smith. I think ultimately I see the pros outweighing the cons, but I won't exactly be upset if he re-signs with Hawthorn (which you'd expect him to do).

I don't know how the others compare but Smith only played 10 games this season.

The fact that he was still best 22 for most of his last year with us suggests that we didn't. He played some damn good footy as recently as 2019 (yes, along with a few shockers). Not his fault no one stood up to take his spot in the team. If we didn't offer him the third year, we probably wouldn't have been able to poach him from the hawks in the first place.

Agree with others on here - Jordan Lewis was a great pickup and did exactly what we recruited him for.  3rd and 10th in the Bluey in his first 2 years, plus all the leadership he provided. Very good chance that we wouldn't have made a prelim without him on the list.

RE Smith, I think it's a pretty straightforward equation - do our medicos think his body is good for another 2 years? If so, it's a no brainer really. He'd come cheap, and even in the twilight of his career, he's a far, far better winger than anyone else on our list (bar Langdon).

Shoulder injury though I think.  Not an old man calf injury which would spell danger.

Didn't the club say it had room for a big name player? Hardly a 32yo that only played a handful of games this year. IMO we might get one decent year from him. I smell desperation here

ls he better than any other wing we have except Langdon? Yes, next year

Is he the future in that position for us? No

I'd rather see us go hard at Merritt or another outsider that we haven't mentioned yet. Maybe we are?

Why would we go after another old, clapped out Hawthorn player? We need to go after top line young talent.

Why does going after Smith preclude us from going after talented kids? I thought having a balanced list was key?

At Hawthorn, Isaac Smith is considering a two-year contract offer that includes a simple trigger for a third season.

Sources believe the durable 31-year-old is close to putting pen to paper on the deal. If he does, it would force the Demons to look elsewhere for another outside ball-winner.

Rival clubs believe unrestricted free agent Smith is more likely to stay.

Because he would be another list clogger, taking valuable salary and offering little in his last years.

Good! Durable 31 year olds can quickly become injury plagued 32 year olds...

What a ridiculous statement.

Would Smith make us a better team next year?

@dazzledavey36 - to go with your post above, here is the update from Sam Edmund on Issac Smith:

In it he says this on Smith:

Sam says: “That’s the one as an unrestricted free agent where his future is very much up in the air.

“He’s got a big decision to make, he’s had an offer from Hawthorn on the table for a while now and there’s nothing wrong with that offer, but Melbourne want him.

“They want to put him on one wing and keep Ed Langdon on the other, Smith likes Melbourne’s list and their prospects.

“It sounds line ball this one, where his plays this next year and beyond."

Simplistic. Would he makes us a premiership threat next year? If not, is he taking away the chance for our team to develop with a player that would going forward?

Come to the Dees Smitty!

Sounds like he's genuinely torn. I must admit though, I am happy to read that even experienced players like Smith sees great potential on our list moving forward.

Had we had Smith playing with us this year i have no doubt we'd be playing finals.

I agree mate.

It sounds like all the info is pointing to a good offer from the Hawks, but that we are turning his head at this point with a good offer of our own.  Maybe he sees further potential in us over the next few years and that he would be guaranteed more game time as the Hawks might go with more youth moving forward?

Either way it's nice to be in the frame!

Don’t over complicate it then, if he makes us a better side you 1-2 years you get him.   We still have such a young list that having Smith can only help, particularly in the position he plays.

I' m not particularly fussed that Smith won't be a long term player, we've got one year to make progress in finals with Goodwin, we've got 2 years of Goody under contract. We've got a limited crack with May & Gawn.

We could well be at the stage where we have to have a mini blow up of the list if we're not competing in finals next year. I'm comfortable with getting a low commitment (in years, not effort) player in the list to fill a need. We won't be burdened with a long term contract if we have to shake things up in a year.

We still have clear needs, lets fill them as quickly & efficiently as possible and get cracking.

Does he improve us or not. I think yes.

If this increases the chances of finals, it improves the club - more of a destination.

Of course, there is the Hawthorn IP, training standards etc and leadership.

Definite yes.

I hope Clarko gives him a friendly nudge, the Hawks likely won't be winning many games over the next 2 years.

If people don't believe he makes us infinitely better, I can't fathom that. Give me 10 quality touches from Smith over anything that wing has served up for the past 2 seasons, but we know he'll offer more than that.

I will use a simple example of why it isn't that simple. Last year we took Tomlinson (because Mahoney couldn't tell after his first 140 games at AFL level he is not a wingman) and this year we take Smith. Those two players then hypothetically cost us the chance to get Zach Merrett as a free agent for the same price tag.

It's not as simple as will it improve you and never is, it is a question of what will give you the most improvement. I don't have any faith in our list management team.
