I'm slightly circumspect on Saad's kicking and his defensive abilities, but if Essendon traded him for an injured Tom McDonald and our pick 22, that would be hilarious. He'd slot straight in off half back and Tom McDonald would slot straight in to Daniher's rehab group.

Anyone thinking Saad is worth a first rounder have rocks in their heads...

Not a chance...2nd rounder is about right but I would be looking elsewhere to be honest.

I'd do Harmes + Second rounder.

I know Harmes isn't getting a game at the moment but as we all know being played out of position.

Essendon lack midfielders with a bit of grunt and dash. He would slot into their side an be a good performer

Agree no way is he a first rounder.

It's an interesting one.  Firstly, to see us linked to someone in the media means we are really in for them.  We don't often get linked to many players, so when we do come up, it shows that we mean business.  We aren't a Norf type where we throw cash at anyone and everyone.  It's pretty clear that we identify a few targets and go after them.  I think it's been a good strategy so far.

On the one hand, Saad brings something to our side we are crying out for - run, dash and good foot skills.  How good would it look to see him streaming through the guts off half back to hit Weideman on the chest 40 out?  He would fit in perfectly in this regard.

On the other hand, he is not well known for his defensive work, which is something Goodwin and our back six pride themselves on.  Would he fit in there?  Would he upset the chemistry we have down there in that regard?

I think an early second rounder is about right.  If the club think he is better than what is available in the draft, then I'd be happy with trading the second rounder we have for him... if that would turn out to be enough, and if he does decide to leave.

Love Saad. McDonald has little trade currency so i'd imagine melbourne would trade their 2 second rounders for a first round selection and trade that for Saad.

?he is not worth a 1st rd pick unless it’s very late

This has to be combined with his salary ask.  (What is he asking?) He will be OOC so if Dons won't agree his terms..

North, Adelaide etc are in a good position to pick him up for nothing

Essendon may have to take best offer

Assuming Viney and T Mac leave the salary could be manageable but tight given our player mix.

saad for hawks' 2nd rounder would be okay

saad for that and t mac is significant overs for mine

if they lose daniher they'll need a tall to come - hell, they need one now, with hooker and hurley both closer to retirement than their best - as they seem to be lacking big players

i still don't think saad is all that special

Lucky you are not negotiating then!  Saad is a gun that would be in first 6-8 players picked every week for us.  If he's available we should be offering 4-5 years and get him in.  He could take Fritsch role of last season at half back, this year it has been Harmes spot.  Saad would be massive upgrade on either.  I can only think of Zac Williams that comes close to the flair of this guy in his role.

Dodoro may be hard to deal with but not impossible.  Essendon love him because he tries to negotiate good deals for them.  If it were Peter Bell i could understand being more circumspect!  I can think of plenty worse...

Essendon have offered him a 4 year deal. They want him. They won’t be letting him go unless they get way overs. I wouldn’t be getting involved.

Not if they take his salary. We clearly don't see much of a future for him, I think his body is cooked to be honest. If we can move 500k+ off our books for the next 2 years that is better than a draft pick now with free agency.

I would have no hesitation in letting tmac go for a 4th round pick assuming the club takes his salary.

but it'd be just shifting from one to another

whatever we're paying t mac is not going to be significantly different to what we'd have to pay saad

What we get from them will likely be vastly different though.

Why do people throw up names like Harmes and McDonald like they have much trade value?

We wouldn't want a player from another bottom 8 team that isn't getting a game but we're expecting other teams to want to?

Harmes has value and any team lacking midfield grunt would happily snap him up.

With that said, I wouldn’t trade him for Saad.

I'd prefer to pay the money to a player that will be best 22 rather than a forward who will be playing in the 2s.

Haven't seen anyone saying they have high trade value.

Just like every recruit doesn't have to be a gun, or every re-signing is on big coin.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
