Jaded No More 68,976 Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 The worst thing that has happened to this club in the past decade is the departure of Jackson. He saved this club from being a complete joke. I wish he had stayed longer. 26 2 Quote
Diamond_Jim 12,777 Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 There was this.... Bartlett extended the coach's contract after the 2018 season until the end of 2022 but the prevailing view is that next year Goodwin must reach certain performance targets to move into his final season, which means the coach would enter 2021 in a similar contractual position to Ken Hinkley this year. May make it harder to sack SG this year if the KPI's don't kick in until next year 1 Quote

If only someone would stand against Bartlett, He would have had to sign off on the new 3 year deal for Goodwin before a ball was bounced in 2019. He now owns that decision. Quote
La Dee-vina Comedia 17,137 Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 I hadn't realised that Bartlett has been there 7 years. Caro says his appointment was "anointed" by Demetriou. What, exactly, does that mean? My first thought was that Demetriou had a role in his appointment but on a second reading, it could mean, well, nothing really, other than Demetriou not stopping the members from voting in who they wanted. Does anyone remember the event? Was it accepted at the time that Demetriou had some involvement in Bartlett's appointment? Quote

Yes I remember there being talk about the AFL wanting to have a say following the period we had been through and them lender us money to get rid of Neeld etc. 1 Quote
sue 9,277 Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 She can't miss an opportunity to throw in an irrelevant remark about tanking.: Quote Jim Stynes, whose presidency oversaw the tanking scandal, had brought the club and its unique elements together from the outset despite the other failings of its board. 2 1 Quote

Cranky Franky 2,270 Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Extending his contract on the basis of ONE good year was idiotic. Maybe after 3 succesful seasons ok. Also crazy to give a solid player like Harmes a 5 year deal. 6 Quote

It's very Melbourne how the season worked out. Before the season people were saying we had a fairly good fixture but then someone ate a bat. 1 10 Quote
rjay 25,424 Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Hindsight is a wonderfull thing. Many may not agree but the Roos appointment may not have been such a great move. We were so keen to get him that he came totally on his terms, the big one being his expiry date. Because of this I suspect some decisions were rushed. Dew was the man he wanted but it turned out we couldn't get him. Time was running short and we went for Goodwin, someone that Roos didn't know. Loved Jackson but I think he had tunnel vision in the pursuit of Roos and it maybe costing us now. Of course this has then been compounded by Bartletts decision to extend the Goodwin contract. 13 Quote

Adam The God 30,748 Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 I don't mind any of this necessarily. If Smith is a serious contender, it will keep Bartlett and co honest. There is one interesting point to note. Wilson says: "The president has never truly won back the trust or respect of those directors nor their networks despite the fact that several continue to give large donations to the club. Nor did Bartlett win friends at the MCC, a relationship he has never prioritised and one that Jackson did." I was speaking to an influential MCC board member not too long ago and the distinct impression I got of the MCC's view of the MFC, or at least the view of that board member I spoke to, wasn't particularly complimentary. In fact, I'd call it dismissive. 1 Quote

Elwood 3184 1,365 Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 There’s very little strength shown at the very top of the club as shown by allowing the situation whereby we were the club to play Sydney and Freo within 4 days up in Cairns just 5 days after playing in Alice Springs and being one of only two clubs not to have a bye during several weeks of football frenzy. Eddie would have gone down kicking and screaming rather than allow his club to hit the wall and miss a finals series that way. 7 1 1 Quote
