If we miss finals next year Goodwin will be sacked 100%.

We need a smart and crafty coach if this happens as Goodwin has been outcoached times and again on game day .

Not an untried rookie , it has to be someone like Clarkson or Lyon

Sadly boys and girls I think we are stuck with Goodloss for another season as we cannot afford to pay him out and there are too many in control who made the decision to give him an extra three years. Think mid 2021 he goes and a new coach for season 2022.

I don't think so, OD. If we don't make finals, he's gone.

You can't set expectations of finals or bust at the start of 2020 from a board POV and then back in the coach when the team fails to get there.

We've had a perfectly healthy list for the majority of the year and we haven't got there. He's done.

People are too worried about economics here. We'll be fine, as long as we get the next coach right.

I know there's a lot of talk here of it being too expensive to get rid of Goody, and that may be true, but really the cost of NOT removing him, and instead waiting 2 more years (where some of our very expensive recruits will be out of their prime), then waiting the normal transition period for this to gel with a new coach, is far greater. Plus we could lose some in the next year or two (some should go, spuds like ANB, OMac, Wagner etc), but some might leave for success and more money. Who could blame them? So we're at a real risk of missing our very narrow window, if that window in fact exists.

As for the answer? Geez I've never like Lyon's gameplan (although at least he seemed to have one), so maybe Clarko if he was actually free, but I worry about the false confidence that long time successful coaches will strike lightning at a new club, such as Sheedy.

We need someone ruthless, no BS. Won't tolerate our [censored]*poor culture. Yze is junior sure but he'd be worth a look. At least he might care about our jumper.

100%

The expectations were clearly made, and no wriggle room afforded. Finals every year. No finals this year, he fails and we move on.

The cost of a lost window, lost talent who want success/money etc, as well as members who leave in droves if he stays... is too high.

No finals, Goody goes.

The other problem af is people are over estimating the quality of the list. It is a mid level team if things go our way. We have a large number of average players.

I reckon you'll find most of the league rates our midfield, but most of the league finds us very easy to coach against.

Simpson, Clarkson, Beveridge of the experienced coaches.

I like Yze as the sentiment option, but have no real idea if he can coach.

Luke Beveridge was approached when Roos was looking for a succession plan you know. He declined as he wanted to be his own man and not spend a year learning the Roos way in order to get continuity. Dew said no and with a time pressure Goodwin got the gig and as an assistant offered some attacking flare to the Roos based defence strategy. Ironically we haven't got the continuity from the Roos mantra as Goodwin has moved in a different direction and slowly dismantled that in successive years and now we are 18th in the league for tackles.

Bevo is now a premiership coach and has rebuilt his list on the fly and they have a red hot go. Goodwin has shown what he has got and the trend has been downward. Unless he has some new tricks or a sudden change of heart, the slide will continue. A new coach takes time to change up  or another year of same old Goodwin style tells me that 2021 expectation should not be too high.

Also consider that Jones, Jetta, T Mac and Melk have all fallen a long way from 2018 and have not been adequately replaced and are either gone or past their best. Sacking Goodwin will not fix things in the short term.

Has won zero premierships.

If he is so great, why would Freo sack him? He was gifted teams ready to win a flag and failed twice. Although he did get them to GFs. We are not near as good or mature as saints and Freo were when he took over

Freo sacked him because they needed to re-build and he wasn't suited to re-building a team.

we're ready to challenge but our coach isn't capable, in a very similar stage to St Kilda and Fremantle when he took over.

I agree we are stuck with Goodwin for at least another year, we need to get good assistance around him.  Seems Goodwin doesn't work that well with assistant coached we had a good line up, in 2018 most of them have gone.

Get Neitz as our forward coach, we need someone to take Weiderman and Jackson under their wing to teach them how to be a key forward.

I was just putting out who I'd like, not who I think we'll get. I know the Beveridge's and I'm not sure we'd get Luke.

I know Bevo from his days at St Bedes and told him at the time I wish he would go to Melbourne. He laughed and said he would see. I think he is Footscray's coach for as long as he likes and has built HIS team. Why would he go to MFC and start from scratch? Not going to happen.

We have one KPF who at present is an average KPF. No good small forwards, a couple of handy forward flankers and that is it. That forward line will no kick winning scores against the better teams in the competition, in fact it struggles to kick winning scores against the weaker sides. We have a multitude of players who fall into the VFL standard talents group and a bigger number of average talents. The top ten Players cannot continually cover up that lack of talent.

I know he's only a kid with a handfull of games but I reckon the loss of Jackson really unbalanced our forward set up.

Tall athletic and mobile .The type who defenders must pay attention to. Took a lot of pressure off Weid.

As you say he is only a kid, in my look at the list I have left off this years recruits as it is too early to tell. Early indications are that two of the three show promise.

I wouldn’t mind John Longmire.

One of the best footballers I've seen and an inspiring captain. He was thrown into coaching unprepared but has done a bit since. He would certainly be worth a close look.

He is a true leader and got to watch him live for a couple of years in the Lions dominance of the comp.

Would run through a brick wall.

He's hopefully learnt a fair bit in his coaching career now.

If we look at Voss, you'd have to look at Mitchell and possibly Yze.

I'd worry about Yze getting sucked back into our clubs existing culture though.

1st choice would be Clarkson by a mile.

Not keen on Lyon.

You mean like McCartney, Rawlings or Jennings? What can't people see here.

Re coach, it needs to come from imo: Clarkson, Longmire, R Lyon, B Scott, Fagan, C Scott, Beveridge, Hardwick, Hinkley, Simpson, Ratten. I'm not sold on Worsfold. We need someone with a bit of inspiration and drive. Of course many of those we just won't get but that's the path I think we need to take, we can't afford any more rookies, not until we are on our feet properly. Surround one of the above with Solomon, Voss, Mitchell, Hodge or Hayes.

I also think Mahoney should go along with Goodwin and I'm still not sold on Taylor either.

Bit of a mess when you actually look over the whole club tbh.

I think someone here mentioned we'd found some mystery money down the back of the couch and were otherwise in sound financial shape to the extent we could afford to pay him out.

Yes and that was my second point, Goodwin doesn't seem to work well with his assistants, the good ones leave.  Your head coach is the figure head, you need a team of good assistance around him.  If a coach pushes them away it is a big issue.

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in
