Someone mentioned it earlier, but how did the umpire justify calling play on for the Brown kick that clearly went at least 25 metres in those last 30 seconds?

I've seen kicks go 8 metres and get paid.

That was unbelievable call. Smart play by brown (i assume he had nothing forward). Pay he mark as he should and langdon golds that for 10 seconds and then down the line and its game over. Gave them a chance.

It was actually a really smart kick by Langdon to get it so deep under pressure. It was great he was switched on as he could of easily just assumed the mark was going to be paid and got tackled.

It was touched.  Just after the line.

I've read a lot of posts now saying how good the backline was, and yes, they were brilliant, but we play 18 man defence FFS. It was a team effort. We had stand out performances in May, Petracca and arguably Langdon too, but the team defended the ground and prevented constant slingshot most of the night.

Agree, but they did have 16 more inside 50s than us. The defenders held up repeatedly when St Kilda were mindlessly bombing it in (which was happening in part because they couldn't get through the zone).

The defence is what was missing from last week. We couldn't stop the Dogs' run, but we stopped the Saints' brilliantly.

Melbourne said Viney needed the rest rooms. I mean fair play. When you gotta go you gotta go ?

Huge win. Did not see that. Goodwin coached well I thought.

Also, Viney did not attend the team song in the end.

Walking off he looked like he cracked the sads..

Did anyone notice this?

Just said on Fox that he had a call of nature, and had to make a rush for the loo...

I'll be the first to admit I was disappointed how we finished the 2nd quarter but also I'm happy to have lost the $50 I had on the Aiints to pocket  another 4 points. Pleased they really gutsed it out for a win. Anyone else like paying for a win. Does anyone remember the Demons incentive plan. Mine normally goes to the TAB these days.

Rapt to win and there’s a lot of room for improvement, mainly because we have actually lost the clearances three weeks in a row, yet consider that a strength of ours

It was a supreme snsp. Better than his first 70m torp.

Still getting over Mays game.....

Been watching this club for a long time and its hard to remember a more complete game from a defender

Probably sums up the feeling of about 90% of Demonland.

Lucky I went to the bottle shop and stocked up today.   Ugly game,  take the win,  turnover still a massive issue

Turn overs were dreadful. This is the area of our game we need to clean up. Clean those up, bring consistent effort like most of tonight and we take the next step.

vandenBerg, Hannan, Jones and Pickett laid 3 tackles between them.

I love vandenBerg's intent but if he's not tackling, I'm just not sure why he's playing.

I'd like to see the pressure act stat (does anyone know if it's available anywhere), as I'm sure the FD look at it, and it might be what keeps Pickett in the side.

AFL stats keep once percenters, which interlude pressure acts i think - but i think it takes a day for it to come up

That was my call. Close. But we got it

Big Maxy, what a great captain.  When asked in an interview what does a big win like this mean, Max's response was that he was  "I'm just proud that we can put a smile on some people's faces back in Melbourne".   Maxy has such a great connection with us supporters with his down to earth, easy going approach.  Love ya Maxy.

You’ve never seen MFC kick so badly around the ground? How long have you been following them? 1 week???

About 30 years.  But that was pretty bad - I can't remember kicking directly to opponents more than today.

Ratten does himself no favours pouting about it. I thought better of him than that. It was a clear goal. Yes it was touched, after it crossed the line. He should accept it. The goal umpire was right there. Ratten's team also got the benefit of some doubtful free kicks. Funny how no coach complains about that.

But but but... doesn’t he just make everyone stand taller*?!

I said after the Pies game he was not great.

*besides Spargo, even on his tippy toes he can’t stand taller. His toes are double jointed, the wrong way, and when he stands on them he actually gets shorter.

I think we can give Richardson a fair amount of that credit!

I had been thinking the same thing.

Sure they ran free at times and certainly got too many “easy” clearances and switches, but having their recent coach on our side of the bench surely made a bit of difference ... and there was only a bit of difference.

saints did it more often than we did. both teams played a half-back game and had multiple players playing intercept roles. Our skills were good for the most part today I thought.

Ratten should go back to Carlton he doesn't belong in St.Kilda. Cleary his eyesight is gone, I saw it over the line and called a goal but why wasn't it paid a mark it was wasnt it or do I have Rattens glasses on. Close to goal of the year.

3 May 2 Petracca 1 Goodwin

Fantastic defensive structure.

They wanted to pick us apart the way Geelong did and we didn't let them.

We had a few that did everything they could to give the ball back to them but our setup was so good it didn't hurt us.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
