    Trading Viney will never happen.. he is a fabric player, the club has done this in the past and it has been a bad move. The difference between Watts, who was also a fabric player and Viney is that Viney has more competitive spirit in his toe that Jack has. And frankly the people saying Viney and Brayshaw cant co-exist in the midfield is rubbish, its up to Goodwin to make this work. They can and they will. Viney is having a 10 time better year than Brayshaw, has his faults but he would be one of the first selected.

    Pruess is the the one that will net us something.  GWS would kill for him, they need a ruckman, there 2 are old and just about done.  We need to go to the draft again, Pickett, Jackson and Rivers were a great group, no reason we cant identify need again.

    I think you're missing the bigger picture, Our midfield functions better without Viney in it. 

    he may be a fabric player culturally but there is a reality to his role in the team that requires either a change in game style, a change in role or a change of team for Jack. 

    it's no coincidence we functioned well in the middle without him there, even without Max. 

    Gus, Oliver, Track is our best starting 3 mids in terms of a midfield unit.

    I dont think i am missing the point, but i get why you might say that. Jack has had a great year, he is in front of Brayshaw in my opinion. Jack has done everything that's been asked of him, his numbers this year are very very good, as i said, he has his faults, but for me, it has to be worked out that Brayshaw fits around Viney at this stage not the other way around. Angus likes it on his terms, and i challenge anyone to say they dont look at Angus sometimes and say he is plain disinterested, dropped the bottom lip and not getting involved. That can never be said of Jack.

    Viney and Oliver are both out and out inside bulls. 

    i think the arguement is really between them, and if the coaches assumptions that both can play in the same team are correct.

    All fair point Patches.. in an ideal world they co-exist. Wait and see.

    yeah true, we might be able to get a late 2nd in a weak draft.

    No point keeping him on when we have Max, LJ and a developing Bradtke who shows promise.

    Papley's cost will be worth it a small forward who can kick 40 goals a year is priceless I think my future first rounder, Harmes, Vanders and Preuss could get the job done.

    i don't; no way swans would want effectively four players for one, especially not middle-tier picks and players

    they'll be looking for (prospective) quality not quantity; blues' 1st round picks in 2020 and 2021 more likely to get it done, but even that's a stretch given their 1st rounder this year is likely to be somewhere between 8-12 and next year should be later than that if they're adding papley

    I don't think you understand how weak Sydney's midfield is They desperately need Preuss and Harmes and Vandenberg are good midfielders and the future first round pick could be a top 5 pick knowing how up and down we are.

    We definitely need another wingman and a small forward to help out Kossie. I don't know about a ruckman Preuss can't get a game and Bradtke is developing. I think we have enough depth in the ruck stocks.

    We have already traded out of the 2020 compromised draft to get Pickett. 

    It would be pointless to trade in draft picks this year, particularly since the absence of lower level and under age competitions has made player assessment more of a gamble.

    We will be looking for player swap type arrangements, plus 2021 draft picks.

    Corey Wagner

    Aaron Nietschke

    Josh Wagner

    Kade Kolo

    Nathan Jones

    Kyle Dunkley

    So depending on list sizes we may need to find 6 new players or potentially 3-4

    Turns 27 before the start of the next season and is a RFA at the end of 2021, they might make the move early knowing that's about all the compo they'd get next year. I see him as having 3 years of top level football left, so if he wants to play finals again he'll have to leave.

    Just checked the contracts and Oscar isn't contracted but Kolodjashnij is interested to see what happens to him. I would now delist Oscar. Jetta is also contracted.

     In terms of draftingand trading, we need some savvy small defenders to replace the ageing hibberd and jetta, as well as more pace in the midfield and another key forward. Realistically we can't do that in one draft

    Nietschke has been promised a new contract and KK is contracted.

    I'd keep Dunkley as he will be cheap. 

    The Wagner's have had enough time on the list.

    Jones will retire

    Oscar and Hunt should be delisted.

    We just have to stay active in the period (which I'm sure we will) 

    Would be great to maybe try and target Will Hoskin-Elliot from Pies if we can - we need another solid target up fwd as Melk/Hannan can go missing at times

    I think the best thing with our list is that we aren't that far off

    AVB + Jones won't be in best 22 next year and I'd like to see us replace them both with outside players, we don't need another inside mid. 

    There'll be squeezes somewhere and we just have to try and get the right fit while not paying overs

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats.     • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
