When did Gawn take a big mark or set up a goal? I'm not interested in a tall player with average skills getting 22 posessions, this is on of the reasons we can't connect with our forward line. If he can't get a quick handball of to a runner, we are restricted to a long kick down the line or a loopy 20 meter pass.

 

If I'm Simon Goodwin, I'm worrying about 21 other players before I worry about Gawn's game.

1. Gawn comprehensively beat both Richmond rucks.  There was no "break even".

3. Go back and watch the game again.  You'll see a goal where Gawn got the ball to Melksham which ended up in a goal (city end).  Was a decent kick too.

4. Check the Age player of the year totals.  Gawn is on 22 votes from 4 games (all the others in the top group have played 5).  He has the 6th highest total with one game less.  Goldstein is on 29 and Lachie Neale is the runaway leader.

5.  Most unbiased observers believe Gawn is having another good year.

6. I respect your opinion even though I disagree with it.

Will agree to disagree but I find your opinion to be very contradictory given you claimGrundy couldnt beat Phillips on Friday night. Given the quality of opponents Gawn has faced this far, he should be dominating and I don't think he is.

I thought we had two players who played acceptable games based on their expected outputs. Petracca and Hibberd.

I hold Gawn to higher standards and don't think he was as good as he should have been. Issues such as an inability to kill the ball on the goal line for the second week in a row continue to undo some of his better work.

Whilst he is our best player at the moment, he is dropping marks he should take and still adjusting to the Captaincy...trying to do too much.

Max is the least of our problems, but his shocking kick from defence in the first quarter set the standard that the rest of the team followed for the rest of the day, and he compounded it by dropping several fairly straight forward marks in the same quarter. I agree that he is trying to hard and hope that he doesn't burn himself out in what is already a stressful period for everyone.

I noticed Richmond players regularly holding up play after marks and free kicks. (I suspect most teams do this, not just Richmond. We may possibly have done the same yesterday but watching as a one eyed supporter I tend to miss when we infringe.) If the AFL clamped down on these obvious delaying tactics by handing out 50 metre penalties all the time it would do two things. It would stop it from happening and it would help with the flow of the game because the delays are obviously strategic to allow the team without the ball to run back and block space. Seems to me to be an easy way to help "fix" the game.

When Picket learns to grab the ball in space he's going to be a knockout forward. Teach him to lead, teach him to get that room to run and kick. Allow him to break lines for the big and unexpected grab - he has anti-gravity attributes. He should take snaps at goal 4-6 times per game, and should be fed by his teammates.

On the basis of this we should be trading him because some people want to trade players the minute they make a mistake . On another thread, Brayshaw, McDonald etc are all up for trade. Seriously when are we goin to let up on the players. Their Efforts have been good, it is just the execution !!!!    plus Gawn , Brayshaw and McDonald are the least of our worries.

I can think of a couple of players whose mind goes in reverse when they have the ball (i.e. Viney & Clarrie) . Melsham has his capabilities and aspirations mixed up and Lever still thinks it is pre season.

Hannan , Hibberd  and May showed good stuff yesterday and Fritta was good once he got on his bike. But it would nice if we had a 196cm fwd as well as Tmac. ( Do we know where there is one .......Weiemann.,Jackson ???

Gawn was awesome gain.

That said a growing concern is how often opposition teams are sharking his taps, particularly after a quarter or so. 

That is not his fault as such, it is down to getting our set up at stoppages right. And at the risk of putting everything at the coaches feet it is their job, well specifically Mathews as the mid coach, to get the set ups working right.

There is some real merit in this Old Dee, and I am a Gawn fan.  When you look at the last few flag sides, they've managed to get by with journeymen type rucks.  Richmond - Nankervis/Soldo/Grigg; WCE - Lycett/Vardy; Bulldogs - Boyd/Roughead; Hawks - McEvoy/Hale/Bailey; Swans - Pyke/Mumford.  That takes us back almost 10 years.  There's certainly no Gawn's, Grundy's,etc amongst that crew.

Even back to the mighty Brisbane team who rolled Clark Keating out every September to feed Voss, Lappin, Power, Akermanis et al.

I'm pleased Max is playing for us, but we are certainly not getting maximum benefit from his dominance.

I have very confidence he will win the B and F again. I am also confident we will finish in the bottom four again for the third time in four years. Our list is greatly over rated if you cannot hit targets by foot you are an average player at best.

I think the coaches assessed the game similarly to me. Gawn was not awesome and neither coach saw him as one of the best 5 players on the ground.

Didn't want to start a new thread especially for it, so figured here was the place. With everything going on for him this year, Hibberd has been absolute heart and soul; and his performance on Sunday was sensational. Desperate at the contest, ran hard both ways all day, backed into packs and didn't sook when things went against him (which is a VERY noticeable trait among his teammates this year). Just giving him a shout out for being a role model of powering through adversity.
