why one more game back? plonk him at FF

He can't play full forward he's not big enough. I hope they persist with Weid and Jacko and move Tommy to CHB.

He is mobile and tends to bring the ball to ground. I'd much rather him at FF than Weid or Tmac

I have no idea where we're playing Sparrow. Offers so little, meanwhile Harmes spuds it up at half back. Need to get him on the wing.

Yep Harmes is certainly being wasted.

Brayshaw moves back into the midfield and bazinga he hits form.

Move Harmes back to tagger role and I bet he would come into some form.

Doesn’t seem all that hard to figure out but it seems it might be for some.

He’s an absolute liability at present.

Getting caught all the time, fumbles and brings nothing. Big fall from grace. I know everyone wants him round the ball, but who does he replace?

Overruns it and fumbles everytime

Move him forward

Grow some balls simon and move harmes out of the back line team

Fixed it for you.

Doesn't matter where you play if you can't pick up the ball. He has regressed to 2017 Harmes.
Would rather have Jordie "Tackles" McKenzie playing

I tend to agree with you. HBF doesn't seem to suit his instincts; tonight he was below-average. Could be dropped, however I'd like to see him played as a tag next week on Sidebottom - I  think we need to assume the midfield battle will be halved against the Pies so we need to curb Sidebottom's creativity.

Harmes needs to be dropped

Or played as a midfield tagger, he’s not smart enough to find the ball himself, he needs a  good player to lead him to the ball

I reckon there is a typo in the name of this thread. I reckon harmes is  having a  little puff on the wacky tabacky before game this year.

Harmes is wasted

Must be down on confidence because everytime he touches the ball he fumbles it or gives a free kick away.

"Continues to persist"? It's been 2 games. Reckon we should give it more of a chance before making a definitive call.

Long enough sample size for you mate?

Yep. Absolutely not working! haha He's in all sorts out the moment, could be coincidence of course, but you'd doubt it.

Harmes has been part of the coal face, not the same week as last week (which was better) but I am watching a different game, his pressure acts and bravery are ace. We have a win and people need to find a new whipping boy because Spargo went ok?? FMD

You watch. The coach will eventually move him forward and put him on the wing and he'll be markedly better. It's a bit like the Bailey Fritsch experiment down back. Or the Gus Brayshaw wing thing.

It's worse than that @A F. His ball handling makes Simon Godfrey look like Cyril. He's dropping marks, his disposal, on the rare occasion he gains clean possession, is horrific. He's missing tackles & giving away cheap frees.

I disagree with whoever suggested that he needs to tag because he can't find the ball himself. At his best he's a quality midfielder
He's just hopelessly out of form and has been all season. Nothing to do with his position. Needs a spell.

Absolutely agree that he's been horrendous, but I reckon playing him out of position is smashing his confidence. I mean, I don't know how many players we have to do this to before Goodwin realises that maybe we should try a different role for them.

As for the tagging thing, a lock down role with a focus more on stopping his opponent is the perfect way to build confidence. It's not based on you winning the football, it's a defensive role. And as you have simpler KPIs, you can meet them and your confidence can grow.

It's a bit like what we've seen with Weideman whose KPIs are get to as many contests as possible. He's built from that low base and slowly developed confidence. Now he's looking like he could break out this year.

I think this is the best way to coach personally, and I'll back Harmes to clean up his disposal and become damaging again if he's played in a more suitable position, like a tagging midfield role either in the guts or on the wing. I'd give him a task and say you're playing on the opposition's best or most valuable player and shut them down. Don't worry too much about your offensive game, but if you get it, absolutely try to hurt them going the other way.

Come 3 or 4 games in that position, a couple of small wins, maybe a big win in there and he starts to get some touch back. Maybe it's even a defensive forward role on the opposition's most dangerous half back?

We know Harmes can be a weapon from midfield-forward when his confidence is up. Let's hope he's given the chance by the coaching group.

There's merit in what you say but I think he's too far gone at the moment. A week off might do him good & then bring him back for a specific role against the Doggies. Young Smith might be a good assignment (seriously good player & second only to The Bont in importance). The problem with that is, I can't remember the last time we tagged. Goodwin seems happy to let our mids go head to head with the opposition e.g. Oliver facing off on Cripps.

Love to see Chompers back up and about because I think, when on song he makes players around him better and he's great to watch. But at the moment he's killing us from within

Fair enough mate. Each to their own.

I think that could hurt confidence. Instead, I'd keep him in and say, we're gonna back you, Harmesy, but we're going to give you a midfield or forward role, because we think you can add a lot to our offensive game.

I think Harmes has realised (or has been told) that he is not Dusty Martin MkII.  Probably not best 22 now and has always been overrated. This discussion about being played out of position is BS. Modern mid-sized footballers need to be flexible.  Skills don’t fall away because of a positional change.

I reckon Sparrow is being played because we need fresh legs in such short breaks - this season isn't a standard one.

He is best 22 - has played every game this season so he is best 22. Agree he was fumbles mcgee last night though. Messed up my multi because he didn't get 15 disposals.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
