Yes, a hubs proposal essentially keeps players in detention - an isolation much more extreme than any measures in Australia and on par with Wuhan, Ital and Spain.  Like a racehorse, they let out of their stable to train and play.  It's absurd and such a low priority.

You totally overlook the mental benefit of having the diversion of having another interest to look forward to other than staring at four walls all day or loading up on netflix.

I understand it has to be done with caution but it can be done. The way our population is structured if your fears come about we can shut down quickly again. We will never be like Europe or USA.

How does a ‘hub’ work away from families if the players can get out and about?  It’s a quarantine to limit potential expose to the virus.

it truly is a global pandemic and it does appear outcomes (deaths ) are really variable. I have been saying the term cases really says nothing as the variables between data collection and cultural and societal practices is enough to make modelling useless.

We still have little information on actual depth of the problem as we have no idea how many people had mild symptoms and have never reported as a case.

It is also amazing that we have had few reports of transmission from supermarkets and hardware stores which are open . 

A sizeable proportion is related to the one boat Border Force failed to stop and health workers who are front line workers who were so devoted they failed to isolate  some when they had symptoms.

its certainly a tricky business.

I have proposed that we in Australia can perhaps create Economic Activity Zones, where controlled activity can be formed around a centre with a major health centre and accommodation for isolation if necessary. This is similar to a hub but  needs all services and support operating within the Zone with careful testing of anyone moving into the zone. Perhaps I've been isolated too long myself. They say mental health issues are increasing.

Of likely tourist centres, yes the Greeks have done really well. Also the Portuguese. But for the rest of us ... Though not sure I'd be citing anything from the Sun.

AFL is so far from an essential activity; it is a luxury for society.  If it is safe to play, then that's fantastic.  Playing is isolation hubs where players are essentially under draconian lockdown however is absurd.  This is a global pandemic the likes of which hasn't been seen in 100 years.  Literally pulling families apart for a luxury spectator event is absurd.

I agree, and I'm sure the players do to and will have no qualms with foregoing their salaries for this season.

While I’m not to fussed about when sport restarts this is a strange argument from the players. No one wants to be in the current situation, yet here we are so let’s deal with it as it comes and get back to being able to earn a living where we can.

So if they are not getting paid, are you ok for them to do no training or any other work with the club?  And accept they'll be completely underdone when games resume? I too find their position annoying, but I do not believe they should hand back all their contract, I'd think 50-70% would be more likely. This may well be the case if the players opt out or the season is cancelled altogether. The AFLPA have talked about further contract cuts if delays continue beyond the date agreed upon (whenever that is)

Isn't the 'hub' idea about coping with interstate travel restrictions rather than local 'lockdown' (or quarantine) requirements? Once the players are in their 'hub' I just assume they'll be able to get outdoors as often as they need, as long as it's done in a responsible manner for a suitable reason (training) or with appropriate social distancing (social activities, consistent with whatever that State's rules are at the time).

The hub needs to keep players quarantined from the general public and possible sources of infection.  They can interact with each other, but not the general public - otherwise a hub can become a cluster.

Sure, but doesn't mean that you should just blindly go along with every hair-brained scheme that gets floated.

In any case, last time I looked, the players were impacted by all this as much if not more than the rest of us. Hard to see how they're "immune" from what's going on.

I don't like the hub idea, but I think they need a better argument than 'we didn't sign up for this'...

The players are in no way impacted like many people who have no jobs, no income and nothing to go back to.

They don't get to fully do their jobs but they are still getting paid way above the average not to do them.

How are they impacted more than the rest of us?

I'm in the NT as well, so have the same selfish reasons to support the idea. On the surface, you can make a good case for it. Virus locally under control? Check (touch wood). Borders secure? Check. Much needed injection of cash into a flailing local economy? Check.

But looking at it rationally, I doubt it will happen.

Logistics aside - if the AFL were responsible for re-introducing the virus to the territory, the fallout (AFL and Government) would be massive. Granted, it's a very slight risk, but footballers are young and stupid and mistakes will inevitably be made.
