Update I just received from an AFL club:

"The current advice from the AFL in relation to matches is that Round 1 will proceed as normal with any further plans to be communicated as they become available."

It was only a matter of time before someone publicly floated the idea of setting an age limit for access to critical medical facilities eg ICU.

A terrible dilemma for hospital and medical staff. 

But it is an approach that makes sense.  Lets hope we never get to that point.

The AFL is preparing for the possibility of a delay to the start of the 2020 season, with boss Gillon McLachlan holding daily briefings on the rapidly-developing coronavirus threat. 

The AFL is preparing for the worst-case scenario — postponing Round 1 — in the face of the alarming and growing coronavirus.

Chief executive Gillon McLachlan is chairing daily emergency briefings with clubs, the government and health groups and the Herald Sun has learnt that, as of Thursday, the AFL couldn’t guarantee next Thursday’s season opener going ahead.

“This is not moving by the day, this is moving by the hour,” an AFL source said.

“There are some big calls to make.”

Subtly putting it out there so people don't get blind-sighted like they did with the NBA. Only my opinion, but I think this is all but certain to happen now.

Here is an opportunity for the government to come to the party, so to speak, in order to keep the national sports occurring,  to help ease the anxiety of the nation... even if the games are closed to supporters.!

Of course it is;  can you imagine a huge majority of people at home with nothing to do but be worried and negative about life.

Distractions to the other realities are crucial to keep people calm.

Not sure it will keep anyone calm but it can be a distraction.

Agreed.

However, whilst Morrison and others fiddle and down play the virus, the situation gets worse daily. 

No travel, close borders, ban events etc must come quickly otherwise we are going to have a national health disaster. 

As we are ill-prepared in regard to public policy and preventative care items such as masks and equipment we are not in good shape to withstand a possible tidal wave of cases.  Go to any GP clinic and you will see the mess we are in. Our service providers are ill-equipped to face infection patients and put their own health and lives at risk.

Sadly, the public gets mixed messages from the Government and health authorities. Its a pandemic etc etc but according to Morrison we should go about our business and not get unduly alarmed. 

Posturing and responses on COVID 19 appear similar to responses on climate change and bush fires. 

Hold tight and pray. WE are in for a rocky ride.

Robbo's article, while quite reasonable in its content, is actually saying nothing other than the obvious. Round 1 might be postponed. There's nothing in it other than the obvious and it's full of ifs, buts and maybes, such as "the possibility of delay", "rapidly-developing", "preparing for the worst-case scenario", "couldn't guarantee", etc.

If you boil it down, the AFL is doing what it should. It also should have developed contingency plans for circumstances such as these years ago. In theory, there should be a big folder on a bookcase somewhere to be pulled out, dusted off and opened to the right chapter which says what to do when this type of situation arises.

Can't see what good postponing the first round would do. Empty stadiums yes, but what good would postponement do, might as well cancel the whole season.

Its a fine line the government walks.  They need people to stay calm, society needs to keep going. 

If everyone panics the economic contagion will be far worse for families and communities than the virus itself.  Sadly, the virus will claim a small % of people but if everyone closes their wallets, planes stop flying, venues close down, businesses stop operating we will have the mother of all economic meltdowns the like of which we haven't seen for nearly 100 years. 

A quick look at the ASX and Dow Jones shows what could be in store in the real economy, if governments do not get the juggling act right.  The stimulus package is aimed at keeping us out of the economic quagmire while trying to manage the health risks.

Having said that I'm with you on the health risks the government has taken, especially with not closing travel from Italy 10 days ago.  There is little doubt they waited until the Formula 1 teams had arrived before placing the ban.  As I mentioned in an earlier post I'm filthy they put Grand Prix $ before public health.  Now they have FI crews in isolation and the likes of Lewis Hamilton saying 'what the hell are we doing running this race amidst a health crisis'.  Lots of questions to be answered by the Formular 1 organisers and one Paul Little.

To Fox's credit, you couldn't really tell the difference and the commentators did a solid job.

The problem with this is they can't see what's happening off the ball or down the field and can only commentate on what they see on the screen. 

For example they won't be able to analyse our forward entries properly because they'll only get half the picture. They'll see the bombing in but they might not be able to tell us what options were available. Not in real time anyway.

That says a lot about how bad the commentary is.   Too much about viewers can see for themselves interlaced with mutual ego building and irrelevant stuff.
