The New Home Base & Training Ground Thread

Like @daisycutter I don't understand what is the problem:

Here is the "indicative" proposal: Here is the existing layout:

The Glen Eira Tunnel which provides access for cars on race day is a short walk to the left from the headquarters. If a car can drive there then so can the club van with equipment, and players can certainly walk the distance.

What is the problem?

why do you think there'll be a change of government

od, there is already a drive-through tunnel on the mid west side

not all construction equipment would fit through, but those that don't could be craned in and left inside for extended periods. plus, there is no building construction inside, just equipment for ovals and landscaping. no necessity for long (if any) access across the actual track.

it all looks quite manageable without much interference to the race club

You are kidding I hope? LABOUR has about as much chance of being re elected as I have winning a Mr. Universe title! Not one person that I know supports this manifestly inadequate excuse for a Government! NOT ONE!

we'll see

labour have always been corrupt. never stopped them getting re elected before

they'll roll Allan and bring in a new leader before the election. go with a clean slate strategy.

plus there's no credible opposition. the liberals are beyond useless

You will find that the Act calls for ramps at a certain gradient both ends to allow for disabled access.

Power and lighting.

Fire sprinklers.

Emargency phones.

Air vented in by fans.

Fire extinguishers and first aid points.

Exhaust fans to vent fumes out..

Escape hatch.

Pumps large enough to disperse flooding.

Signage and access for emergency services.

Yep, a Chunnel is a big deal taking into building codes and OH&S into account.

I bet none of their other tunnels have all that equipment

Except they don't us or anyone on the inside of "their track"

Either way they have no money the state is broke.

Might be true. But maybe they are in no position to insist. Let's hope.

Seriously

They are the racing body. They are the reason the place exists. They are the second most powerful club in an industry that contributes many millions to the Government coffers. Their members rank among the most powerful people in the State.

If it makes sense and benefits the MRC we'll get our ground but we'll always be the lesser tenant. For instance I'll wager we don't have much by way of overhead lights for the ovals. Pitch side facilities will need to be submerged below the sight line plus a million other concessions.

BTW: Where does the high roofed indoor training centre go?

It’ll happen if Munz gets behind it, otherwise I’d suggest it’s dead. I could be wrong but it sounds like our Board and club think they hold some kind of bargaining power….sounds like egos at midnight to me. I stand by my comments that if this falls over it has to take the bulk, if not all, of the Board and possibly Guerra with it. You don’t get to this point to have it fall over unless you’re a bit of a fool.

What if a player is injured during training and needs to leave in the cart? The cart would need to cross the track which could be more of an issue than players walking across.

How often would this likely happen

Why can't we just ride horses over the track instead of building a tunnel

There is a long line of people at the MFC who were on this project who have since been shown the door, a President and CEO have already been unable to get this up and are now gone.

plenty of room, outside the track, in the mfc-favoured south-east corner

The way some carry on about this 'complex' , about all the things involved, some near seemingly insurmountable... sorry I have to laugh.

In the world of civil engineering, the Metro Tunnel is a complex project, a 100 storey building , not as complex ( these days ) as some would suppose... a new Training establishment for the Dees, OUGHT to be a walk in the park ( or a lap of the course or two ) by comparison. There is NOTHING hard or confronting about this at least not as being presented to date.

The ONLY thing hard....is finding a spot and someone telling us to start. I seriously dont think the coin is the issue some think.

No, the only issue is as of this writing we have nowhere to build. Prospects not looking too flash either.

The redevelopment of Moonee Valley Racecourse must be playing a role here. No racing there for 12 months at least. If that wasn't happening right now I imagine MRC wouldn't have as much hesitancy towards the tunnel and impact to racing.

Being broke never stopped them spending money before. That said a project in an affluent area like Caulfield wouldn’t be a priority

And the other thing, labours buddies love a big build. A $100 million project will line plenty of pockets.

Except this isn't really a BIG build... the new school next door .... a much bigger project.

It depends when they were built, building codes have changed,

How much earth would the horses require over the top of the tunnel, at least a metre I would think.

I fail to see the ablutions block in the sketches also.

Most importantly the discussions have not been in good faith, February 2026, and we still haven’t reached a starting point.

100%.

You can see it coming that the long term outcome will be Casey.

When we know that the players dislike going out there.

Would be interesting to know if they still hated it if they weren't split between AAMI and Casey. If everything was in one place, and there was a lifestyle sell to be made (living on the Mornington Peninsula as opposed to in the city), would that mitigate the issues? Possibly not. But it might for some.

I think the biggest issue from a facilities perspective is finding a way to kill the wind that plagues the footy oval

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
