Melbourne Footy Club care factor..

Schitts Creek Goodbye GIF by CBC

Maybe the Club doesn't care but I reckon a lot of fans do, especially those who were there at the prelim in '87. Not many good memories there. Bad voodoo

Got some pretty bad memories at the MCG too

Plenty more good than bad there. Unlike Arctic Park

Can anyone explain Melbourne Storm’s success, given they are also stuck in the dysfunctional AAMI facility. They train on the horrible surface that we used to use under Bailey.

They are susceptible to MFCSS

They have cohunas

The state government is not broke. It is guaranteed by the Commonwealth and the RBA owns most of the semis issued by the Vic gov.

Anyway, we're talking about a contribution of perhaps $20 million, which should be framed as a community initiative. Right now, public land is used by a select group of people and with our proposal, we'd be opening the space up to the public.

Frame it right and the proposal is a drop in the ocean.

Meanwhile, perhaps the state gov should bring back into public ownership some of the tollroads it helped build with federal funding and Kennett sold to foreign companies for 99 year leases.

Not broke you say.

Are you suggesting the State’s finances are in good shape?

Also what are your thoughts on the very large debt owed.

And you do realise that Kennett’s rein ended last century!

I'm sure hundreds of options have been considered, but I'd be interested to know if we've had a crack at being included in the Fisherman's Bend development. Surely we're more chance of getting serious government money for opening a facility in a new precinct while some tacked on community stuff than developing anything in an established area. Added bonus - it's a city location, and could be somewhere to play VFL/AFLW games.

I hadn't paid much attention to the Caulfield plan until recently because it's like waiting for airport rail or a fast train to Sydney, but got interested when the Waverley story came out. The last update on the website is from September 2024, and it doesn't explain the benefits of Caulfield other than we want to build somewhere, and this is somewhere that might let us build. Now that Waverley is on the agenda, I think they need to justify why the cost of Caulfield outweighs a combination of Waverley/Casey. Obviously a custom facility would be better, but is it $70 million worth of better?

The people who have done proper work on this project know more than I do, but I hope we're not getting caught in a rush of executives and board members wanting to be the person who finally delivers the holy grail of an MFC home venue regardless of cost.

P.S - As a bonus feature, here's the bit of the FAQ where they ran out of content and had to fill space.

I’ve seen Fisherman’s Bend mentioned a few times here...

Firstly, the school was a nightmare and has ended up with almost zero open space.

And also the area extends into industrial zones that are currently entirely disconnected from any community, which is where I imagine you’re suggesting?

I don’t see the appeal whatsoever. Caulfield is far superior and the multipurpose usage is all good planning and will work. They just need to get it done.

Just imagine if we had a resource tax on hydrocarbons similar to Norway… especially with a barrel hitting USD100, every sports team in the country would have elite facilities, and the arts, education, health, hell we could even build our own nukes and tell the seppos to nick off.

Upset about this blunder, Melbourne leaving Melbourne, no coming back once they pack the removal van to Waverley of all places.

The racetrack and the tunnel dream will soon blow over

I’ve definitely got the Fitzroys about this.

So the current set up spread across 3 sites which cannot fit the whole club in any of them is acceptable, the disconnect is so evident,Waverley may not be ideal but until Caulfield is nailed its a far better solution.

Craig Bellamy.

Along with a good club board/management.

Because in the NRL context the AAMI facilities albeit shared with other clubs is amongst the best in the league. They also benefit from being out of the NSW and QLD bubble which is arguably more intense for NRL than Victoria is for AFL. The Sydney media market is massive and while AFL dominates airwaves here, in Sydney the NRL is another level. It's also a better "TV" sport so people are glued to their screens more for it. The Storm benefit from flying under the radar and doing their own thing. Melbourne has to compete with 9 other Victorian clubs including Collingwood and Richmond on either side along with a divided club, small fan base and inconsistent management.

Also that.

I was at a Mental Demons function last night where Steven Smith confirmed that Waverley is definitely not happening and the Caulfield option is very close to being announced.

Great news.

Does that mean tom Morris is wrong? Colour me shocked

The Mental Demons function. It is run by Russell Howcroft and Don McLardy. They do a season launch at Max's wine bar and an end of year event as well

SS said that they (the media) went a bit early . He also confirmed that they deliberately leaked the Kossie situation to Garry Lyon to get on the front foot.

It definitely aligns to what Guerra said on SEN when he had every opportunity to announce the Waverley move and didn't.

It appears Morris is wrong, or at least premature in his reporting. He normally got his leaks from The Brand.

I think Waverley will happen and I've been told that some players have been engaged for their insights into how we make it a home but only once Caulfield can be solidly announced which is edging closer.

A debt of $160 billion projected to be $187 billion in 2 years. A downgraded credit rating yet again. A public service that keeps expanding for little to no reason and on top of that youre suggesting to buy back a toll road which turns over $13 billion a year?

Ok...

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
