I did just that and found this article. It may be what you are referring to

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/afl/magpies-open-to-vacating-nest-to-help-australian-open-keep-growing-20260202-p5nyy0.html

So basically the idea here is Pies would temporarily use Gosh's paddock during the Australian Open to accomodate Tennis Australia. But the article also explores other options and considering it's only a month we're talking about here I doubt that Gosch's is much of a trump card.

I think there were a few media reports quoted, but that could be one.

The Pies already train at Goschs occasionally during the year.

"Collingwood Connection: While the Collingwood Football Club ("Pies") trains at the nearby Olympic Park Oval (Westpac Centre/Glasshouse), they have used Gosch's Paddock for training, particularly for matches near the MCG."

And our leverage? On this public land that we ‘book’? Rent? Lease?

The difficulty in kicking us out is commensurate to our leverage in encouraging assistance with Caulfield.

It’s tenuous and hopeful at best.

Lease and leases expire

aside from all that, the filth has had a need for a 2nd oval to better accommodate aflw, vfl and vflw close to their current location. currently they are quite restricted regarding expansion. same requirements with richmond but so far not much said publicly by them

But tenuous and hopeful is ahead of nil.

If we have a lease for a certain period, that is a legal right and better than tenuous and hopeful, would you not agree?

Has the club announced anything re Waverley?

They haven't announced anything about anything.

My understanding is that both Collingwood and Richmond would like Gosch's. Tennis Australia have also thrown their hat in the ring. I've no doubt Eddie could get in Jonathan Munz's ear about getting Melbourne into Caulfield so the Pies can take over Gosch's.

The pressure to leave Goschs and get Caulfield diminishes if we go somewhere else temporarily.

If parties want us to leave Goschs, then help us get Caulfield.

I wouldn't budge until Caulfield is fully committed and they are turning the soil.

Couldn’t agree more. Happy to be know as the Gosch’s squatters until something permanent becomes official.

I reckon it will be TA and either Coll or Rich as TA use will mainly be in the footy offseason/preseason.

At Caulfield for midweek race meet.

Tunnel underground from grandstand to inside the track is approx 100m. Can’t be wider than 3 metres and 3m high, with lights running the length of the tunnel and not much else.

Furthermore, there are a couple of footy ovals already inside the track. If the MRC refuse to relent and we aren’t able to convince them to allow us to have a training base, the whole board needs to go pronto. Anyone worth their salt could get this arrangement through.

Did you have a collect?

Posters on DL have referred to them, but I suppose you could google Tennis Australia and Goschs and do the same with the Pies.

"Gosch's Paddock is a key public recreational space located within the Melbourne & Olympic Parks precinct, adjacent to AAMI Park and the National Tennis Centre. It serves as a vital green space for the surrounding elite sporting venues, including Melbourne Park, and is frequently used for AFL training, public exercise, and as a pedestrian pathway during events like the Australian Open.

Melbourne Park +2

Key Information regarding Tennis Australia & Gosch's Paddock:

  • Expansion Potential: As of early 2026, Tennis Australia has identified the land around Gosch's Paddock and neighboring venues as potential space for future Australian Open expansion to accommodate more fans and facilities."

How does the Australian Open intend to expand its facilities around Gotch's paddock. The dog walkers would be up in arms.

The MRC as a stakeholder is a tenant and nothing more. They don't have a say in whether we are able to lease the area inside the racecourse. While it helps that all stakeholders are aligned and supportive the MRC is not a decision maker.

Only guessing, but the Collingwood ground would be used as overflow from the AO, and with Big screens set up, similar to across the road.

Collingwood then move to Gosch's for their training sessions.

I used to live near VFL Park and always saw it as a soulless windswept dump but it won't be me that has to drive down there to work. If we did move our training base I'd miss getting down to Gosch's a couple of times a year to see the boys train on public holidays. It's lovely on a sunny autumn day.

It's now 41 years since we were kicked off the G.

This thread has now seen Covid in and off, watched as a President departed, another almost serve out his term only to be replaced by his vice, before the predecessor was then resurrected.

4+ years of the Ukraine war, multiple Middle east conflicts, skirmishes and now another war.

Witnessed a drought breaking Flag.

Seen many premiership players, Coach, President (who was meant to bring skills that would assist in landing said new training ground / home) and the CEO depart.

The way things are going (or not going!) i may not last long enough to see the question mark on this thread removed.

All the more reason for this not to fall through

I am smiling as I post this.

This is a discussion about a pretty important issue for the club.

The members are totally in the dark.

While I accept there could be good reasons for the lack of announcements, surely a comment from the club couched in appropriate terms wouldn’t be too difficult to manage.

The club dug this hole themselves when they teased a big announcement coming at the end of last year. The members are right to be frustrated.

Is there any way the club could sign a naming rights sponsor to help get the project off the ground? Possibly less money needed from state government. Potentially their sign would be seen at all Caulfield race meets.
