Now you tell me what did he mean by that? Go try and insert "U" in the acronym and perhaps you can spell it out and ask yourself whether that's what you would like said about a daughter or grand daughter undertaking something that they love and enjoy.

Nasher I know what you are on about. I have a friend who is connected to a Amos club and I have got involved in them and as a result and really enjoy going to games. I have another who used to play Basketball on the edges of the NBL and a similar thing happened. Sadly perhaps I have no such attachment to Girls footy. The result for me it is like watching paint dry. Now the PC police will probably Fall on me and so be it.

Go the Dees! We won yesterday! A superb victorious effort by the AFLW Demons with a 2 point win over North!

Go you good things - such a good start to the season!

For all those who are confused about the AFLW season (which Melbourne has started brilliantly) I did some research:

I was unaware of the conference system, the crossover games, the 8 week fixture and the 3 week finals.

Thanks Acca - now I see where all our Friday night games went!

I visited the AFL website to find the AFLW ladder. There was none that I could find, only last years AFL Ladder. Surely they (AFL) could pull the finger out.

I don't hate it mauriesy. It just does not entertain me. And as you say they don't care about those that don't like it and that is fine. I have no problem with those who do like it. We all have different tastes and desires. It has nothing to with my age or sex it simply does not entertain me. 

My only criticism of AFLW at present is that there should be 10 teams max - the original 8 plus Geelong and West Coast. The remaining Melbourne teams are just diluting the talent pool and Gold Coast is completely unnecessary.

You can see how critical the best 5 - 6 players are to each team, and if that top level was stretched to 8 - 10 players per team you would see a much higher standard of play.

The endeavour and the physicality is first rate. The younger players coming through who have 10 years of junior football behind them have significantly better skills and better game sense than the players who have been parachuted in from other sports. Give them 2 - 3 years to build up physically and they will raise the standard further.

I can appreciate the differences between AFL and AFLW and the low scoring doesn't overly bother me, although the kicking for goal still seems to be an issue for some players.

I thought Saturday's performance was solid and Melbourne probably were a 2-3 goal better side. The mid tier seems to have taken a big step forward between seasons. I was concerned about our lack of marking options up forward prior to the season and our inability to convert possession and scoring opportunities into goals is probably the only thing stopping us being genuine premiership chances.

 

It's  always great to see a Demon victory.

This is just the beginning and all criticism is correct and support is fantastic.

We do need to get more women interested, they must follow and invest in the sport as men have done with AFL to make this expansion of the industry  work.

Men need to ensure they attend and follow games with their female partners, friends, etc and particularly the next generation. Encourage women to attend and support the game , encourage them to see what  is possible as AFLW evolves to similar skills, and emotion as AFL.

i hope we can all overcome our negatives about all the issues recognised and can see that there is so much potential to grow interest and involvement in sports with all the attendant benefits this offers to society. This is the beginning of societal change that should be encouraged.

I see things in a similar way too old dee ... but I don't watch the Mens version of AFL as a general rule as I no longer find the sport 'entertaining'.  Much prefer League,  Union,  Soccer & the NFL these days.  To be honest,  I'd often rather watch a decent movie than any form of sport.

I will watch the Womens & Mens occasionally for other reasons (the winning,  the contest,  social interactivity etc etc)  Both versions would be much better viewing for 'my eyes' if there were far less players on the ground and the players played in their positions.  Restricted rotarions as well.  But that's just me. 

Of course I attend or go to our games but all that is based on fanatacism and the want to win.  I couldn't even tell you whether the games are entertaining or not with the mens side of things (all that really matters is the winning)

The womens version might see those same levels of fanatacism down the track but not yet (from a personal point of view)

But I'm all for participation for both genders so therefore heavy subsidisation should be high on the agenda from the AFL  At all age groups.

An example of that is the Sheffield Shield in cricket ... very low crowds and very little interest outside of those who are really keen on their cricket.  And the Shield would cost about $10Million or more to run ... the Shield brings in only a fraction of that outlay in revenue so is heavily subsidised. 

And that is a necessary thing for CA to do.  Their income streams from Media, Tests,  BBL & India easily covers the cost of the Shield.

As for entertainment,  there are any number of forms of entertainment and as you said,  it simply comes down to personal choices.

And there are more than 2 arguments going on here ... there's the entertaiment aspect,  the growing of the sport aspect,  the increase in participation aspect etc etc.  And the 'Winning' for the club which is also high on the agenda.

Melbourne beat North and are outside the 3 for finals contention in their conference, but North are in their top 3. 

Yes I know it is only round 1, but the same scenario can happen at the season end.

Yep I noticed that too lol.  Probably too early to call but like last year we might have been placed in the tougher conference.   We just have to keep winning.  Big game this week against Dogs.

Daisy will be better for the run, not unsurprisingly looked a bit rusty.

I'm the same as above, give the season a chance to warm up and like the AFL itself you look back at the end of each year and say the standard gets so much better from the start  to just near the pre Finals.

That said i do worry that  the number of pushes going on this season already just like last, in both AFL and AFLW,  is going to cause a serious injury to someone if used to shove a player into another when not being able to have their body under control.....

On top of that you get some commentating galah (not denigrating the bird) who, in one of the contests yesterday, says about what a great collision it was!!

I like it. My young grand kids love it. No sooner has the BBL finished, they've stopped playing cricket and they're out there with their Demons jumpers on and No. 6 on the back playing AFLW.

As soon as I see the red and blue jumper I just have to watch.

 

 

Usually I'd have something to add when I stroll in here mid week but everyone's already covered the main points. (Plus the traditional derail that must occur in every AFLW convo, yawn. Got to say that most Dees supporters commenting here seem to understand the context of the league better than the average AFL men's fan...no surprise there, of course ?).

Love seeing the enthusiasm for an unexpected win here after the loooong offseason!

My favourite thing about watching footy is seeing players develop and improve, picking out the ones with potential and then (hopefully!) seeing that realised at the highest possible level. Obviously, AFLW has that in spades, so for that and many other reasons, I find it very enjoyable.

So there are are two players I do want to highlight who I didn't see mentioned up thread. Shelley Heath and Harriet Cordner. Heath is one that I could see great potential in when she debuted in 2019. Her game on the weekend, especially when it was there to be won in the last quarter, showed all of that starting to come together. She just went and went and went, super tenacious and looked really fresh as other players tired.

Harriet is a sentimental favourite for obvious reasons but she's improved so much over the first 3 seasons and had a big VFLW campaign, winning Casey's B&F (Birch, Zanker and Jakobsson were joint Runners-up, for those playing at home). It was a massive task for her to shoulder most of the ruck duties against North's ruck duo, particularly King, who is some 10 cm taller and much more experienced in the role. Harriet did a great job and was well supported by her teammates.
