This really is a nothing topic, but I love a good fluff piece.

I’m watching The Australian Open on the telly, which is the quarter final match between Federer and some unseeded American player named Sandgren. Well, Federer’s back appears to be kaput and it’s looking more and more like Sandgren will prevail as he currently leads 2 sets to 1 and the 4th is currently going with service.

What does this have to do with the Dees I hear you ask? Well, at the beginning of the game they did a brief puff piece on Sandgren that shows him in a signed Dees jumper with a footy in his hand. The interviewer then asks about the jumper and they switch to footage of him being presented with the jumper by Oliver and Salem, on what looked like the ground at the Collingwood facilities.

Could this be a sign?

PS. Does anyone know when this presentation took place and why?

Alex De Minaur has a surname that sounds like 'Demon Awe'.   All the omens are at the tennis, obviously.

Sheesh, the ball girl just gave Sandgren a corkie during the changeover. Definitely a Demon this bloke.

Sandgren now down a break in the 5th after having 7 match points in the 4th set. This guy is our spirit animal.

If Bennell's calf doesn't come good, sign him up!

He’s cooked... about to lose the unloseable...done a Melbourne!

Hardtack put the muzz on him.

Really why did we picture him?

Loser fit or otherwise and one if the worst players to ever  play On Rod Laver Arena.

Only got near Roger  because Rog  had an injury crop up.

Resembled some of our games In 2019, looked winner in last quarter teased and lost.

Credit where it's due. This tournament he took down # 8 seed Berrettini, #12 seed Fognini, former #11 Sam Querrey, and took the GOAT to 5. For a bloke ranked #100 in the world, that's a fair run.

TIL that Tennys, who plays tennis, is from Tennessee.

He only got near Roger because he won enough other matches to make it to the quarters! Anyone who makes it to the quarters deserves to play on the Rod Laver Arena. Ridiculous comments.

Only the MFC Media department could attach their brand to a guy as troubled as Tennys the day before he invariably loses to Federer (in an MFC style fashion). Such a fail.

Alt right Pizza-gate truther. Just not who we should be associated with.

"Troubled"? Give it a rest.

Dragging up 'news' from 2 years ago to have another crack at the media department only illustrates how desperate you are to be negative.

Next you'll be saying TMac's form drop was due to him going to the Jordan Peterson talk (and somehow the MFC media departments fault also).

Talk about reaching.

I hadn’t read about any of that (holiday mode)... you’re right (minus the alt) though, the club would be much better not associating themselves with him.

A basic google search to make sure someone doesn't have completely wild political views and isn't immensely disliked by a large section of society is all I'm asking. It might be 2 years old but it's also the last and only other time Sandgren was in the news. He's a journeyman who's had a couple of decent AO runs and will likely remain most known for his stupid tweets. So, the bad PR outweighs the positives of a couple of shots on TV and in the paper of a Melbourne jumper.

I think I've already posted here or elsewhere that Tom McDonald going to listen to a nutter for self help advice was concerning - I care for all of our players and don't want their mind filled with junk, although that's a personal choice. Most likely a completely non factor, if not, hardly a surprise it didn't work for him. Hopefully he pats a few more cats this year and gets back in form.

6' 2" and looks to have a pretty solid and strong frame on him, maybe we could sign him up as a category C or whatever that international recruit thing is.  He sort a looks like a footballer if you can get over his awkward handballing style (big Jimmy learnt how to sorta bounce the ball eventually didn't he?)   Think we could offer him something financially competitive with what he's paid as an international tennis player ?

...Tennis player Tennys - sounds a little bit like ATM machine.  Roger certainly had some fun with it!

I wonder if his leg brace was modelled on or for Brayshaw arm brace?

Maybe that's why he was at the club.

So given how close he was to beating Federer, does this mean we are going to get to the finals and lose by a kick after the siren?

So what you're saying is you didn't know this about his past, went and googled this 2 year old 'news' story, posted it on the internet again and now apparently he's "immensely disliked by a large section of society"?

Weirdly, none of our sponsors have immediately pulled the plug.

I prefer to watch my sport stars play sport, the idea of getting to know almost any elite sportsman will end in disappointment.  This guy seems no different.  Stick to playing tennis mate and keep your politics to yourself

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
