Do you agree? Who’s in your Top 10?

10. Jesse Hogan

9. Mark Jamar

8. Neville Jetta

7. Bernie Vince

6. James Frawley

5. Jack Viney

4. Tom McDonald

3. Clayton Oliver

2. Max Gawn

1. Nathan Jones

It's a pretty sad list really, I guess an indication of where we've been as a club.

Not wishing to denigrate any on the list for fine contributions in difficult times but in reality only Oliver and Gawn stack up as A graders.

I was thinking the same. No wonder we’ve had the decade we’ve had. Oliver and Gawn aside (and a couple of very good early seasons from Hogan) the rest are serviceable players.

Other than Gawn and Oliver they struggle to rate against the competition's elite.  However, the list is Melbourne's best 10 of the decade and I'm struggling to think of anyone else you could add. Bluey winners are 2010 - Green, 2011 - Moloney, 2012-14 - Jones, 2015 - Vince, 2016 - Viney, 2017 - Oliver, 2018 - Gawn and 2019 Gawn and Oliver.  Both Moloney and Green were done during the Neeld era. It's an accurate (and sad) reflection on our last 10 years. I'd argue Jones is a couple of spots too high but I can understand why he'd be put first.

Jones gets a legacy vote, sure, but our best player? Just have been a slow decade. Its Gawn by a country mile.

Would assume this is based on contribution over the decade rather than a list of simply 'best players'. As good as Gawn and Clarry are, they've both only had 3-4 years each of high impact compared to the consistent performance of Jones over the 10 year time frame.

Yeah, Jones has been consistent alright lol

Brayshaw came 3rd in the Brownlow.

I’d have AVB ahead of Hogan. He stood up in the most important games of the decade.

What about the ones who got away/didn’t make it for one reason or another. Lousy coaching, lousy culture, whatever.

Watts, Scully, Trengove, Grimes, Toumpas, Stef Martin, Liam Jurrah, Colin Sylvia etc. etc. Lost players, lost opportunities abound!

Yeah, he has.

3 Blueys, likely 300 gamer and potentially our games record holder by the end of 2020. Not to mention the personal characteristics of the bloke in his work ethic, consistency of performance and fitness and his unmatched loyalty.

Personally I find the shift in supporter mentality towards him the last year or two (in certain circles) absolutely p*ss poor and symptomatic of a weak supporter culture, which is of course ironic given how much supporters love to complain about club culture.

You are kidding right?...No i don’t think you are

Weak Supporter Culture

P..s off

this Club throws crap at it’s supporters far too often

Jones is a good ordinary player who won Bluey’s and was a “Leader” because there was bugger all competition within the list for years

You won’t agree, but i don’t expect you too.
Jones our number one player for the entire decade is both laughable and an indictment on how badly the club has been run for so long

He should have been retired after 2017, but 3 years later.....

Sentiments      HMMMMM!

1.Jones, 2. Gawn,  3.Oliver 4. Viney  5.. Happy Jack Watts  6.Jetta  7. Bernie boy Vince   8?........9?....10>>>>    I hope our next Decade is something special to talk about.

No Example A is yourself and other Happy Clappers who are happy with the odd win here and there.
Seasons 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2019 were not up to AFL Standard

2017 we choked right before September.

If you are going to argue about Supporters getting angry throughout this last decade, then you are on. It’s lucky we have any members at all
Jones voted the number 1 player of the last decade is a pure indictment on the club.

No mate, I am no 'happy clapper' nor am I satisfied with our lack of success. But I choose to recognize and respect Jones' contribution and football career rather than belittle him from behind the anonymity of a keyboard and rant and rave on the internet like it will achieve anything. You seem to inhabit this world where you're either a 'happy clapper' or mad as hell (it's obvious which one you've chosen of course), which blinds you from being able to see things in anything more than the most simplistic of ways. It's sad to be honest, you seem to not be able to draw any joy at all from footy anymore, only from whinging.

Our supporter culture is as bad (still) as our football culture has been. The fact we've had young men who have had to remove their own social media accounts due to abuse from their own fans says as much. But I'm sure you're one of those who say 'well they get paid lots, so I can say whatever I want!', which generally goes along with the gutless supporters who cancel their memberships to 'teach the club a lesson' while concurrently complaining about our lack of facilities, resources and poor bottom line. P*** weak supporter base sometimes.

Exhibit B:

Please refrain from telling me what kind of supporter i am, as if your are some kind of  beacon of righteous light.
the Players along with the Club are the ones with the ability to make change happen, we the Supporter and Member just pay for it.
The last 10 years have been worse than appalling when put up against other clubs, but Players and Officials are all on similar coin.
so if i want to say something that you don’t like, i really do not care.
Our President was so smug after the 2018 Season, despite the Preliminary Final result, and 2019 showed a distinct lack of preparation.

Preparation never lies....

Agreed. It’s not a knock on Jones nor a disagreement with his place on the list, it just simply demonstrates how much of a lack of talent we’ve had over the past 10 years. Jones wouldn’t feature in the top 10 of many other clubs lists.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
