Herald Sun doing a mock right now and have us taking Jake Bowey and Seamus Mitchell. NO, NO NO!!!!!

I agree. No no no. Their predictions aren’t too bad except for our picks.  If Maher, Poulter or Ford (and Winder) are available, I would definitely draft before Bowey and Mitchell.  I’d even grab Baldwin according to this listing.  They have Mitchell very high imv and I’d look at him as a rookie option. He’s clever but nothing as a standout like Maher, Poulter, Ford or Winder.

Ok... do we have rookie space to move KK?

I believe so with Lockhart being promoted and Harley retiring (I assume he was on the rookie list like Mitch Brown was). I think our only current rookies are M.Brown and Chandler, and then there's Bradtke who is category B.

The news means Nietschke wouldn’t be delisted and then drafted at Pick xx in the rookie draft. He just moves down. It makes sense.

Do we have 3 rookie picks avialiable. I'm surprised they haven't done this for Kolodjashnij he makes the same amount of money on his contract but $80k is outside the cap.

I think JTs list would be

Finlay Macrae

Jack Carroll

Archie Perkins

Nik Cox

Brayden Cook

(The first 5 are likely to all be drafted before our pick)

* Errol Gulden (Swans academy) bid

Bailey Laurie

Caleb Poulter

Zavier Maher

Eddie Ford

Kaine Baldwin

Isiah Winder

Nick Stevens

hopefully we can get 3 of these youngsters on board

Was interesting that Cal reckons Ford sits somewhere in the pick 35 range. Can't quite work out why he's ranked so low, has some v good traits.

Like the look of his highlights 'Chaser', wouldn't be disappointed to pick him up.

Yes, I know they're highlights (so fairly superficial) however Ford looked very impressive. Creative, made tackles stick, good in the air and seemed to kick well off both feet.

Agreed. Eddie Ford was impressive in 2019 as an underage player for the Jets. Best Jets player since Callan Ward. As good as Cam Rayner. Disappointing that the Vic U18s comp didn’t get into the park in 2020.  Ford showed in the futures game at the G that he is as good as any in his year group.  I thought he’d be top 25 ranked (probably 18-20) so hoping he is a possibility for JT.

The Jets program is one of the greatest failures of the U18 comp, dare to say they would have the least number of players drafted by a long.

Cam Rayner, wasn't he No1 pick, if this guy is as good as Raynor how does he get to our first pick?

I agree @drdrake that the Jets have been the weakest program and probably had the lowest number of draftees. Over the last few years, they have had a good bunch of players drafted Rayner, Butters, OHalloran, Dugan, Sicily, Laverde, Hunter.
It’s strange that Ford is not rated higher imv in this years draft. Time will tell.

Maybe it’s the socks up look but to me he seems a bit stiff in the hips and a bit of a straight line mover. Most of his tackling is straight on and same with his ball winning.

Medium forwards who aren’t proven mids and don’t project as the right athletes to be good pressure players often drop. Curtis Taylor was similar and it’s still a question if he’ll be a steal or a flop. Melksham’s declining value to us similar.

At that height defenders can shut you down more often than not so you have to provide value with pressure, skills in congestion and/or midfield versatility.

Interesting to see the Lions have only cut to 40 and have 4 spaces available in their total list.  Yet they have 3 quality zone/academy youngsters in Blake Coleman, Saxon Crozier and Carter Michael.   All 3 had good years in 2020 as they played in the local competition and might tempt JT to make a bid. They are all  have good skills and are fast running players.

They sure are interesting comparisons! I’ve just been put off Finlay Macrae because he’s been compared to David Zaharakis!

Really hope this kid finds his way to us:

Bailey Laurie

  • Height: 179cm
  • Weight: 78kg
  • Weapon: High footy IQ
  • Player comparison: Brent Daniels, GWS GIANTS

Haven’t seen much discussion about Zac Reid in any threads (presumably will go before our picks). Just seen his highlights. Liked what i saw. I’d add composure to his weaponry. And the comparison to Harris Andrews! Could be the long-term replacement for S May? If we are looking at KPD then wouldn't be surprised if we moved up the order to select him.

Zac Reid

  • Height: 202cm
  • Weight: 83kg
  • Weapon: Overhead marking and absolute reach
  • Player comparison: Harris Andrews, Brisbane
  • Thanks 1

David Zaharakis is a 217 game player. I would be wrapped if we could get that much value out of a pick in the mid 20s in a crapshoot of a draft.

It is a bit of a strange comparison, in the way he plays I'd say the best comparison for Macrae is Josh Kelly in the way that he can win the ball on the inside, get involved in link up play on the outside, the big endurance base, and the neat kicking. Not saying he'll get to that level but in the way he moves and plays that would be the best comparison I think.

i think this is pretty wide of the mark.  When I was involved in western suburbs football, Ward wasn't even the highest rate Jet internally in his own year and there is no chance current Jets people internally rate him as the best player they've had come through there, unless that individual has lost their mind!

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. One of their last drills were three teams competing in a hard at it, handball game in a small area. Goody

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
